Today, most of the population in urban Nigeria, as well as rural communities, rely on herbal medicines for their health care needs. Epidemiological data suggest that lower incidences of certain chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, arthritis, diabetes, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) mediated by the human immunovirus, asthma, neoplasia, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases are associated with frequent intake of fruits and vegetables (Ames et al., 1993; Chu et al., 2002). Various factors influence the use of traditional medicine by 80% of developing nation‘s population which include; accessibility, confidence in treatment, convenience, cost of treatment, socioeconomic status, education and adverse effects of orthodox medicine. As a consequence, there is an increasing trend, worldwide, to integrate traditional medicine with primary health care. Renewed interest in traditional pharmacopoeias has meant that researchers are concerned not only with determining the scientific rationale for the plant‘s usage, but also with the discovery of novel compounds of pharmaceutical value. Instead of relying on trial and error, as in random screening procedures, traditional knowledge helps scientists to target plants that may be medicinally useful (Cox and Balick, 1994). Already an estimated 122 drugs from 94 plant species have been discovered through ethnobotanical leads (Fabricant and Farnsworth, 2001). The prescription and use of traditional medicine in Nigeria is currently not regulated, with the result that there is always the danger of misadministration, especially of toxic plants. The potential genotoxic effects that follow prolonged use of some of the more popular herbal remedies, are also cause for alarm.

Abstract: Connarus suberosus is a typical species of the Brazilian Cerrado biome, and its inflorescences and young vegetative branches are densely covered by dendritic trichomes. The objective of this study was to report the occurrence of a previously undescribed glandular trichome of this species. The localization, origin and structure of these trichomes were investigated under light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Collections were made throughout the year, from five adult specimens of Connarus suberosus near Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, including vegetative and reproductive apices, leaves and fruits in different developmental stages, as well as floral buds and flowers at anthesis. Glandular trichomes (GTs) occurred on vegetative and reproductive organs during their juvenile stages. The GTs consisted of a uniseriate, multicellular peduncle, whose cells contain phenolic compounds, as well as a multicellular glandular portion that accumulates lipids. The glandular cell has thin wall, dense cytoplasm (with many mitochondria, plastids and dictyosomes), and a large nucleus with a visible nucleolus. The starch present in the plastids was hydrolyzed during the synthesis phase, reducing the density of the plastid stroma.

During the latter half of the 20th century, biological classification turned from establishing taxa predominantly on the basis of morphological similarities to establishing taxa predominantly on the basis of shared ancestry / shared derived characters, with biological taxonomies mirroring evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic analysis typically underlies modern evolutionary classifications, but has resulted in the development of many competing classifications. Within the domain of flowering plants, different classification systems have been favored in different countries. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, a global consortium of botanists, has addressed this issue by developing a “consensus” classification that is monophyletic (i.e., its taxa include all but only the descendants of a common ancestor). Now in its third version, the APG III classification is considered relatively stable and useful for both research and practice (e.g., for organizing plants in herbaria). The region varies in plant species richness, being highest in the biodiversity hotspot of Eastern Himalaya and declining to the North-Western parts of the Himalaya. We examined all published floras (31 floras in 42 volumes spanning the years 1903–2014) from the Indian Himalayan region, Nepal, and Bhutan to compile a comprehensive checklist of all gymnosperms and angiosperms. A total of 10,503 species representing 240 families and 2322 genera are reported. We evaluated all the botanical names reported in the floras for their updated taxonomy and excluded >3000 synonyms. Additionally, we identified 1134 species reported in these floras that presently remain taxonomically unresolved and 160 species with missing information in the global plant database (The Plant List, 2013). This is the most comprehensive estimate of plant species diversity in the Himalaya.     Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Plant List This list of plant species was compiled from various sources; mainly Robertson & Luke (1993) and Mutangah & Mwaura (1992), with some additional records from the database made by Robertson from the E A Herbarium in 1986. The Families (and Family Numbers) are arranged in the sequence used at EA. The list is not complete but probably lists over 80% of the higher plants. Certain families such as Vitaceae, Commelinaceae, Cyperaceae and Gramineae should be studied further, as well as the aquatic plants. Before publication this list should be annotated with a specimen cited for each species, and the plant form noted. A plant reference collection (site based herbarium) is being prepared for KEFRI Gede Forest Station, and all researchers who have collected plant vouchers should be encouraged to deposit a duplicate set of specimens there.
