UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Art of Resistance: Trauma, Gender, and Traditional Performance in Acehnese Communities, 1976-2011 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Women’s Studies by Kimberly Svea Clair 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Art of Resistance: Trauma, Gender, and Traditional Performance in Acehnese Communities, 1976-2011 by Kimberly Svea Clair Doctor of Philosophy in Women’s Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Susan McClary, Chair After nearly thirty years of separatist conflict, Aceh, Indonesia was hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, a disaster that killed 230,000 and left 500,000 people homeless. Though numerous analyses have focused upon the immediate economic and political impact of the conflict and the tsunami upon Acehnese society, few studies have investigated the continuation of traumatic experience into the “aftermath” of these events and the efforts that Acehnese communities have made towards trauma recovery. My dissertation examines the significance of Acehnese performance traditions—including dance, music, and theater practices—for Acehnese trauma survivors. Focusing on the conflict, the tsunami, political and religious oppression, discrimination, and hardships experienced within the diaspora, my dissertation explores the ii benefits and limitations of Acehnese performance as a tool for resisting both large-scale and less visible forms of trauma. Humanitarian workers and local artists who used Acehnese performance to facilitate trauma recovery following the conflict and the tsunami in Aceh found that the traditional arts offered individuals a safe space in which to openly discuss their grievances, to strengthen feelings of cultural belonging, and to build solidarity with community members.

  • Bab I Pendahuluan A
BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Aceh merupakan negeri istimewa.

  • The Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam As a Constructive Power
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 1 No. 11 [Special Issue – August 2011] The Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam As A Constructive Power Mehmet Ozay1 1Faculty of Education Universiti Teknologi Malaysia 81310 Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia Phone: +60 12 64 77 125 E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract This paper argues that the Sultanate of Aceh had commenced a watershed apparently in its relation with the centre of Islamic world to construct a new political concept of Pan-Islamism in the very early decades of the 16th century and as its succession in the 19th century. The mutual relationship between the center and its periphery shares substantive responsibility in a manner of being constructive. Concerning the inter-relational approach between the centre and its periphery of Islamic world, the relation of Aceh with the Ottoman State became one of the hallmarks of the development of Pan-Islamism. Thus this article reexamines the ways in which Acehnese sultans’ promoting Pan-Islamist ideology in relation with the Ottoman State on the basis of contemporary news and commentaries in the journal of Basiret which was published for about 60 news commencing before the appalling Dutch war until June 1874 in Constantinople. Key Words: Pan-Islamism, Basiret, Ottoman, Indian Ocean, Aceh 1.Introduction This paper revisits not only the relationships between the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam and the Ottoman State but also and the conceptual development of the Pan-Islamic world view in the context of the center and the periphery of Islamic world. The writer employs an approach that is an alternative view to the conventional understanding of center-periphery relations in terms of Islamic states, and the relations between the Ottoman State and the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam.

Dahrun Sajadi, MA Universitas Islam As-syafi’iyah [email protected] Abstrak: (In English) The birth of Islam which was brought by Allah's Apostle, in the 7th century AD, gave rise to an extraordinary driving force, which has been experienced by mankind. Islam is a giant movement that has been running throughout the ages in its growth and development. The entry and development of Islam in Indonesia from a historical and sociological perspective is very complex and there are many problems, especially regarding the history of the early development of Islam. There is a difference between the old opinion and the new opinion. The old opinion states that Islam entered Indonesia in the 13th century AD and the new opinion states that Islam first entered Indonesia in the 7th century AD. Aceh area. The arrival of Islam to Indonesia was carried out peacefully, it can be seen through trade routes, da'wah, marriage, Sufism and tarekat teachings, as well as arts and education, all of which support the rapid process of Islam entering and developing in Indonesia. Islamic education activities in Aceh were born, grew and developed along with the development of Islam in Aceh. The mass conversion of society to Islam during the Islamic kingdom in Aceh could not be separated from the influence of the royal rulers and the role of scholars and poets. Aceh has been the center of Islamic studies since the time of Sultan Malik Az-Zahir, with an informal education system in the form of halaqoh.

Regions which appear as leading powers in economic developments have historically had their own particular dynamics. In the event that the dynamics of the past uncover the true means to go forward, it will trigger the path of progress at an unexpected time, when similar conditions are met. Taking this condition into account with regard to Aceh, we see that Aceh has been a potential candidate for the newly emerging economic development centers in Southeast Asia after the disastrous event on 26 th December, 2004, pursuant to which the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Helsinki was signed by the related sides on 15 th August, 2005. To assess and evaluate the possibilities and opportunities that open up before Aceh Province by virtue of the MoU, the tradition of economic developments in history should be revisited and evaluated. It might be assumed that the reflections from the past will certainly enlighten the future. This article suggests that the economic development of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam in the past might be a starting point for all parties in Aceh Province to deduce exactly how to deal with prevailing difficulties so as to commence economic progress in the region.

  • Bab Ii Kerajaan Aceh Sebelum Sultan Iskandar Muda

  • Controversies Surrounding the Aceh's Sultanahs
CONTROVERSIES SURROUNDING THE ACEH’S SULTANAHS Understanding Relation between Islam and Female Leadership Saiful Umam UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta - Indonesia Abstract: The history of Aceh Sultanate in 1641-1699 might be an exception of the Islamic history in general. While the history of Islam is generally male-dominated, Aceh which had strong Islamic credentials was once ruled by four female rulers consecutively during the period of six decades. How did Muslim women become rulers of an Islamic kingdom despite Islamic teaching “prohibiting” them from taking a leadership position? How did people react to this fact? How did the queens rule the kingdom and survive despite opposition? Despite notions of some historians that the queens’ periods were the weakening time of the sultanate, the existence of female rulers is a proof of the continuing position of women in the public sphere even in an Islamic state. The presence of influential aristocrats, the division of Aceh into three powerful sagis, and the support of `ulama>’ are main contributing factors to the rise and establishment of female rulers in Aceh. The administrative structure of the sultanate and its Islamic character suggest the development of moderate Islam that made women leadership in Aceh possible. The opposition to female rulers in Aceh which the succession of rulers was hereditary was more politically and economically-motivated than religious. Keywords: The Aceh’s Sultanahs, al-Raniri, women leadership. Introduction The history of Islam in the world is equal to the history Muslim men and very few cases that it notes the role of Muslim women (Muslimah). This may be because Islamic teaching is male-oriented as Journal of Indonesian Islam; ISSN1978-6301 Published by the Institute for the Study of Religion and Society (LSAS) and the Postgraduate Program (PPs), the State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Sunan Ampel Surabaya - Indonesia Saiful Umam indicated by the Qur’an and the Prophet’s tradition.

First International Conference of Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies Organized by Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore & Rehabilitation and Construction Executing Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR), Banda Aceh, Indonesia 24 – 27 February 2007 Aceh as a Muslim-Malay Cultural Centre (14th-19th Century) Teuku Iskandar Retired, The Netherlands [email protected] Not to be quoted without permission from the author First International Conference of Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies 24 – 27 February 2007 Pasai and the introduction of Islam . According to his grave monument Sultan Malik al-êāliú in Pasai, considered by many historians to be the first Muslim ruler in the Malay Archipelago, died in 1297. Although the Hikayat Raja Pasai (The Chronicle of Pasai) is not a historical writing in the true sense of the word, it nevertheless gives us a glimpse of the cultural life of one of the earliest Muslim countries in the Malay world. This story of the descent of the rulers of that country is replete with myths of origin which are a common genre in South-East Asia. The introduction of Islam is explained as a miracle. The Prophet Muhammad had once said to his companions in Mecca that after he passed away there was a country below the winds, named Samudera. If at some time news about this country reached Mecca, a ship should be dispatched with all the requisite royal regalia, and the inhabitants should be converted to Islam. In that country God would create the greatest number of saints. At Ma’abari a faqir should be taken to Samudera.
