10 – Eurocruise - Porto Part 4 - Heritage Streetcar Operations On Wednesday morning Luis joined us at breakfast in our hotel, and we walked a couple of blocks in a light fog to a stop on the 22 line. The STCP heritage system consists of three routes, numbered 1, 18 and 22. The first two are similar to corresponding services from the days when standard- gauge streetcars were the most important element in Porto’s transit system. See http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/pt/porto/porto-tram.htm. The three connecting heritage lines run every half-hour, 7 days per week, starting a little after the morning rush hour. Routes 1 and 18 are single track with passing sidings, while the 22 is a one-way loop, with a short single-track stub at its outer end. At its Carmo end the 18 also traverses a one-way loop through various streets. Like Lisbon, the tramway operated a combination of single- and double- truck Brill-type cars in its heyday, but now regular service consists of only the deck-roofed 4-wheelers, which have been equipped with magnetic track brakes. Four such units are operated each day, as the 1 line is sufficiently long to need two cars. The cars on the road on Wednesday were 131, 205, 213 and 220. All were built by the CCFP (Porto’s Carris) from Brill blueprints. The 131 was completed in 1910, while the others came out of the shops in the late 1930s-early 1940s. Porto also has an excellent tram museum, which is adjacent to the Massarelos carhouse, where the rolling stock for the heritage operation is maintained. -

White Paper: Urban Application of Aerial Cableway Technology
WHITE PAPER: URBAN APPLICATION OF AERIAL CABLEWAY TECHNOLOGY WSP USA | June 2018 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY WSP USA is pleased to present the following white paper that summarizes the benefits and items for consideration of aerial cableway technology; outlines the project development process; and addresses advantages, costs and challenges associated with developing aerial cableway systems in urban environments. Urban applications of aerial cableway technology have been successfully integrated into transit networks in numerous cities around the globe, including the Portland Aerial Tram (Portland, Oregon) and Roosevelt Island Tram (New York, NY). Interest in aerial cableway technology has grown considerably in the United States in recent years, and initial feasibility studies have been completed in several U.S. cities, including San Diego, CA; Washington DC; and Brooklyn, NY. WSP is evaluating aerial cableway technology as an innovative first- and last-mile connection to regional transit in urban areas. Aerial cableway technology offers multiple benefits, including: relatively lower costs compared to other transportation modes, the ability to overcome significant changes in topography and other obstacles in natural and man-made environments, the ability to bypass congested roadways and transportation corridors, the ability to move high volumes of passengers: the equivalent of one city bus every minute, a streamlined design that fits into the urban environment, the potential to integrate transit-oriented development (TOD) near stations, and the ability to provide service between residential areas and key destinations. Many of these benefits have been realized in existing systems in La Paz, Bolivia, and Medellin, Colombia. Specifically, Medellin’s Line K transports more than 40,000 passengers per day between residential areas and the city center, reducing some commute times from more than an hour to approximately 10 minutes. -

RIOC was created by the New York State legislature, in 1984, to take responsibility, pursuant to a General Development Plan (GDP), for the development and operation of the 147 acres comprising the former Welfare Island, located in New York City's East River. RIOC assumed the role of the New York State Urban Development Corporation as lessee under a 99-year Master Lease (running until 2068) from the City of New York. The GDP, which has been amended from time to time, provides for the development of housing, shops and community facilities for a mixed income, handicap accessible, residential neighborhood. As an island community, Roosevelt Island requires specialized operations and capital infrastructure maintenance such as an aerial tramway, comprehensive garbage compacting system and seawall improvements. RIOC supplements the very basic services provided by the City of New York, and provides specialized operations and capital improvements. -

WELCOME Welcome! The purpose of this open house is to present draft recommendations from the Bicycle Master Plan and the Streetcar System Plan to the public. City sta! and citizen volunteers are here to present the material and to answer questions. The room is divided into three sections: one for the Bicycle Master Plan, one for the Streetcar System Plan, and one called “Integration Station,” where we tie the two concepts together. Refreshments and child care services are also available. The bicycle and streetcar networks will play a key role in Portland’s future. Together, they will reduce reliance on the automobile for daily tasks, they will reinforce urban land use patterns, and they will help the City achieve its goals to combat climate change. Ropeway People Movers for Ski Resorts by Andrew S. Jakes* Abstract Las Vegas, Reno, Sun City, Foxwoods, Tunica, Broad Beach, and several other international mega-resorts, have discovered that People Movers (Automated Guideway Transit) improve their image and subsequently attract new customers. In addition to presenting the rope-propelled People Mover technologies, this paper reviews how specific installations have solved visitor circulation needs in many hotel resort complexes in Las Vegas and elsewhere. This approach can be duplicated to many ski resorts worldwide since the level of ridership in Las Vegas frequently exceeds levels typically found on ski resort shuttle bus systems worldwide. We particularly focus on existing, proven technologies and specific installations, including ropeway Horizontal Elevators (Mandalay Bay, Mirage, Primadonna, and Circus-Circus Automated People Mover installations). People Mover systems represent major changes and advances in equipment, facilities, operations, and services in comparison with conventional rail, bus, taxi, and other street modes. System performance and capacities can be tailored to match expected loads and a broad range of performance and operational requirements. Suppliers usually claim, with justification, that they can adapt their product to buyer's specific needs. Vehicle size can be expanded or reduced. Seats can be added or removed from vehicles. Various grades and curves can be accommodated by altering guideway design and speeds. Riding the circulation People Mover system can be as convenient, safe and comfortable as riding a modern elevator. Stations can be sufficiently numerous to provide development-wide access. Passengers experience little or no waiting for vehicles. The operation can be environmentally friendly with no emissions, very little noise and minimum visual impacts. -

Portuguese Trams It has been 25 years since the OERHS departed Glenwood, yet the following story should be of interest to Imported by Gales Creek newer members because a Portuguese streetcar joined the collection at Powerland in 2006. Porto No. 210 (renumbered Enterprises (1974-1993) 201 before arrival) is not a part of the Trolley Park story, of course, but it is similar to the streetcars that were kept there. Richard Thompson Car 210 was one of a series built during 1938-45 to replace the Brill and St. Louis Car Company classics. A sense of familiarity might also come from the fact that vintage Beginning in 1974, Gales Creek Enterprises (GCE), Portuguese trams share a kinship with our beloved Council headed by Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society Crest cars 503 and 506. (OERHS) co-founder Paul Class, provided at least 70 vintage streetcars to launch trolley operations in a half-dozen American cities. In the process Paul almost single-handedly started what we now call the “heritage streetcar” movement. His company imported many streetcars from Australia and Brazil, but the largest part of that pioneering effort involved trams from Portugal.
