  • Majolica Drug Jars by WILLIAM M
Majolica Drug Jars By WILLIAM M. MILLIKEN, THE ALBARELLO or drug jar made as a simple object of utility for the storing of drugs has often achieved a value far beyond that which its function suggests. In these days when containers mean so much and perfumes are sold partly because of name, partly because of the way the product is presented; in these days when effective packaging is essential for success, the concern of the Renaissance potter in turning out an object of use which at the same time had beauty will be readily understood. Many of these humble earthenware productions have sur- vived the centuries and now grace the vitrines of museums and the cabinets of the greatest collectors, although in the first instance, they were merely planned as workmanlike performances which would ful- fill adequately and decoratively the simple purpose asked. Majolica, an earthenware glazed with a stanniferous, or tin, glaze was a most practical answer to a need. It was resistant and it was cleanly. The use of this tin glaze originated in the Near East, probably in Persia or Mesopotamia, and from there it travelled in the trail of Islam. When it reached Spain is not known with certainty, but it must have been introduced during the Moorish conquest and in the fourteenth century it was definitely in use in the region around Valencia. Curiously enough, the term, majolica, used as a generic name for a certain type of pottery made in Italy during the Renaissance, came from the old Italian form of the Island of Majorca in the Balearic Isles.

The Ohio State University I960 Approved by 6m i Department of Fine and Applied Arts PREFACE Studies of Italian maiolica decoration have been primarily concerned with the distinctive Renaissance styles which appear after 1500. The decorative styles of quattrocento maiolica have not been adequately studied, especially with regard to the development and the chronology of styles and techniques. An examination of the stylistic development in maiolica decoration between U 4.OO and 1500 reveals a consistent, although complex pattern of progress, which prepares for and develops into the High Renaissance styles of the cinquecento. This stylistic development is not a simple organic growth, but rather a compound movement composed of a number of distinct stylistic changes, or phases. Throughout these phases we can distinguish a steady continuum of technical progress which allows an increasing freedom in, and coamand of, the ceramic medium. Maiolica wares are first produced in Italy during the trecento, and the earliest stylistic developments are found in the decorated wares produced in the environs of Florence, the foremost center of quattrocento art. The developments studied in this essay culminate with the emergence of the High Renaissance mode in maio lica decoration which appears in the decorative styles of Faenza during the last quarter of the fifteenth century.

  • Gallery Late Gothic & Renaissance Art in Italy, 1350-1550
Gallery Late Gothic & Renaissance Art in Italy, 1350-1550 The art exhibited in this gallery originates from the leading artistic centers of Italy. The country was divided into a number of independently governed cities and states, an arrangement that favored a strong regional development of language, art, and culture. Art continued to be produced primarily in the service of the Catholic Church; however, patronage began to shift to wealthy families and individuals. Many of the early gold-ground paintings in this gallery are fragments, once part of larger altarpieces known as triptychs or polyptychs. Towards the end of the 15th century, these separate panels began to be joined into unified compositions. Episodes from the Bible, the Golden Legend (a 13th•century manual on the lives of the saints and Christian faith), and the Apocryphal texts provided artists with a rich array of subjects and events to document. Along with the important religious and social changes marking this period, the physical nature of painting underwent a major transformation. The use of oils and canvas supports eventually became widespread, largely replacing the egg tempera and gold-ground technique on wooden panels. Linked to these advances was the development of the printing press, leading to the broad dissemination of religious and political ideas, and greater accessibility to texts and images. • Art and Love in Renaissance Italy
MAIOLICA exegesis that "the painter makes her appear as if she had been wounded by an amorous dart, by placing a dagger in her breast and blood spill[ing] from the wound. And there is a white cartouche as if from her mouth which seems, sighing, to pronounce the word LOVE."4 What Legati neglected to note is the sketchily rendered, graffito-like motif of a flying phallus, its trajectory indicated by the incised arrow pointing to the woman's head. Love is not merely alluded to, as Legati's excursus suggest, but is expressly repre sented by the phallus, as the word amore, emblazoned on its cartellino like a name tag, conveys. (The winged penis as a sym bol of carnal love is a familiar erotic motif, seen, for example, in a print of a copulat ing couple now known only through the engraver's plate; see fig. 46.) The very lit eral tableau may be a pedantic and unironic illustration of the time-honored topos of the pain associated with the travails of love (a theme also expressed in a lubricious scene of a woman exposing her genitalia on an albarello now in the Museum fiir Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg),5 for which the jug's original contents served perhaps as an elixir. Alternatively, this image may be a parody of the bella donna type-an irreverent and sala cious depiction of a brutta donna, or woman of questionable virtue akin to the "insatiable Swallower of Parsnips" derisively referred to by Pietro Aretina's whore Nanna, whose colorful language adduces one of the many Cat.

Grabowski collection at the Museum of Pharmacy in Kraków E I ABSTRACT V This article concerns medicinal preparations from the first European pharmacopoeia listed on the cartouches of apothecary majolica vessels (16th‒18th century) from the Grabowski collection at the Museum of Pharmacy in Kraków. The materials for comparison are three 16th-century works: Ricettario Fiorentino (1550), Pharmacopoea by J. Placotomus (1560) and Dispensatorium by V. Cordus (1563). The inscriptions on the apothecary jars for which they were meant comprise greatly importantT information carriers about medicine in the old days. Their deciphering can also be helpful when dating these objects. Keywords: old medicines, museum,S pharmacy, majolica, Mateusz B. Il precedente volume della Bibliografia italiana di Storia della Farmacia, edi- to a margine del Congresso di Piacenza del 1988 e da tempo esaurito, era divi- so in tre parti.

  • Italian Maiolica of the Renaissance: Corrigenda and Addenda
1 Italian Maiolica of the Renaissance (1996): Corrigenda and Addenda This catalogue had an unhappy history. I had no opportunity to check the final proof and illustration layouts and several text corrections indicated by me were not incorporated in printing. The omission in layout of over twenty subsidiary photographs which should have been included is a further matter of regret. More serious than this was the fact that, although printing was completed in June 1996, the book was not put into commercial distribution until 2006, and then in limited quantities and at a high price; no explanation or apology was ever offered to me for this, nor did I ever receive any author’s copies to distribute to colleagues. The Italian translation which was part of the plan (see p. VIII) remained uncompleted. It is a matter of annoyance to me that, for reasons entirely beyond my control, it was not possible to make the book more readily and promptly available to scholars. It was put on sale at the beginning of 2006 by the publishers, Libreria Bocca, and copies have now been acquired by several libraries in Italy and abroad. Certain additional notes and more recent bibliographical references are also included here; for several of them and for pointing out a number of errors, I am indebted to a careful reading of the text by Michael Brody. The listing of items placed in 1999 under sequestro giudiziario and deposited at the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Venezia in Rome was kindly provided by Maria Selene Sconci. These were returned to the owner in summer 2003 on the conclusion of a court case.
