For example, compare Psalm in the much more literal New International Version :. Here, rather than shortening the original, the CEV has introduced new material by way of explanation, such as 'to take care of you in your old age'. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was barren, with no form of life; it was under a roaring ocean covered with darkness. But the Spirit of God was moving over the water. God said, "I command light to shine! Genesis in other translations. I have read more than a dozen excellent translations but the Contemporary English Version is one of the most readable for me. I would urge you to buy this translation if you find it difficult to understand the Bible. It's so readable that you will have several aha! He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. Everyone who has faith in me will live, even if they die. Always be faithful to your partner, because God will punish anyone who is immoral or unfaithful in marriage. May God bless you as you read and make His Word your way of life! My mom might be a good Catholic, or she might be a bit of a nut. But at one point, she agreed to buy me a plane ticket to Europe were I to read the Bible in it's entirety. Of course, I'm a good son. It took over a year to complete, and I still have my notes somewhere - all the bits of OT hatred, parts that seem to contradict, things here and there that stick out as interesting. But in all, it's rather dull. What's amazi My mom might be a good Catholic, or she might be a bit of a nut. What's amazing is how this book continues to have such "relevance" in the modern world. I blame mass idiocy- Don't take me for one of those Richard Dawkins arrogant types who lack imagination. I'm a solid Deist. I just don't see how someone could seriously attempt to guide the course of their life and take inspiration from this book. Not bad. Not great. Just average. My eyes glazed over many, many times because they were so boring. This goes for the Tanakh part although I have a feeling it's edited to be more Christian and isn't really the actual Tanakh and the Jesus stuff. But, my favorite books were: Exodus, Ruth, and Esther. The rest? Nov 11, Ray rated it really liked it. I found this to be the easiest version of the Bible to read. It's quite different compared to other translations and possibly from the original Greek, but I believe this version is the best for understanding the point of the text, which is what I was looking for in a Bible translation. I recommend it to people who are reading the Bible for the first time. Some have accused the translators not only of simplifying the language which brings its own problems but also skewing some of the theological meaning Whilst the translators claim it was written to be read aloud which they seem to suggest is unique in Biblical translation history, but I am sure that was part of the rationale for the New English Bible I have to say that the short sentences, limited vocabulary and lack of a strong poetic sense in the psalms etc make it a bit dull to my ear But I do enjoy using it for private devotion as it is so readable This edition stays true to the original intention of being aimed at the "unchurched" in that it has short, but useful, introductions to each book, a few clear footnotes, but also a helpful glossary and an alphabetic index of books at the beginning Which is even useful for forgetful preachers who can't remember where Philemon is to be found All in all a good translation for new Christians but I don't think it is in print today with a lot of it's potential market being taken by the heavily marketed New Living Translation. Not long ago I completed my fourth reading of the Bible. The picture accompanying this review is not the same cover as my Bible, but I think it is the same text. All four that I've read are fairly common protestant translations that have had either the official or tacit endorsement of the ELCA church I grew up in. H Not long ago I completed my fourth reading of the Bible. However, one can still notice differences when comparing reading experiences. According to the translators of this version, it was designed primarily to be read aloud, and thus uses simple language and relatively short sentences. There's not much in the way of footnotes, except the very basic notes on alterative translations. There is nothing in the text to indicate a footnote and the reader has to guess about when the read them. For someone hoping to get a real learning experience out a Bible--including historical, cultural, and political context--I can't say I would much recommend this version. It's very bare bones--exactly the type of thing you might imagine is being given away at a Lutheran national youth gathering. In this case, you get what you pay for. Dec 31, Heather rated it it was amazing. The Bible never disappoints, and I enjoyed this translation which was new to me. I try to read it through in a year every couple of years, and I finished right on schedule today. This translation is in modern language and is particularly designed for reading aloud. They've tried to make phrasing choices that minimize confusion when you're hearing the text. There were times when the wording was quite different from my old familiar NIV and gave me a fresh perspective on the text. This was a good a The Bible never disappoints, and I enjoyed this translation which was new to me. This was a good addition to my collection. Dec 31, Sarah Tummey rated it really liked it. I bought this because I wanted a Bible for my Kindle, and it's a version I really like that you can't get on the Bible Gateway app. I don't regret buying it because it's easy to navigate through the books and chapters using the Search facility. However, it's a shame all the footnotes are at the back instead of within the text, and there were some verses where I had to go back to the New Century Version for clarification the NCV is still my favourite Bible overall. This is my favorite Bible. While easy to read, the translation stays true to the original text. It's printed on quality paper and I love the modern cover design. I found this book years ago in a bargain bin for five dollars. It's the best investment I ever made. I actually finished this book on January 9, Dec 28, Brendan Cheney marked it as reference. Too many people hold conservative views without knowing what the Bible actually says. I know some writing teachers recommend that anyone wanting to improve their prose should read the Bible - they specifically mean the King James Bible, not the CEV. Feb 13, Claire added it Shelves: bible-books , non-fiction. The most "readable" version of the Bible for modern readers looking to move through the scripture, in my opinion. It varies quite a bit from the versions I grew up with, which makes the "famous" scriptures a bit weird to come across, but very relateable and applicable. Aug 15, LauraSue rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: everyone who wants a better life. This is the instruction book for my life. I want to live like Jesus and follow his teachings. A fairly readable translation of the Bible. NOT a study Bible, but good for just sitting down and reading. Apr 30, Patiki rated it did not like it. OMG who probably is laughing I hate hate hate this version of the Bible. Mar 06, Stephanie Borges Folarin rated it it was amazing. I spent the year reading the bible and completed it. Very happy! Oct 03, Nancy rated it really liked it Shelves: religion- christianity. I took a year to read the Bible and chose this version as more easily understandable. Believe me--there's still plenty I don't understand. Feb 04, Robert Turner rated it it was amazing. I picked this version of the bible because it mentions giant sea monsters. I thought that was funny. The book of all books! The greatest story ever told! Apr 24, Joan DeArtemis rated it it was ok Shelves: bible , christianity.

A group of seventeen Christians, of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and involved in different ways in encounter with people of different faiths, gathered together in that holy place for a week to read the scriptures together, to offer one another various approaches to interpreting the passages selected here, and to bring to the texts the experiences and insights of their diverse contexts. All the studies offered here have in this way been piloted with an actual group, albeit in somewhat unusual circumstances, and in their present form revised in the light of that experience.

  • Isaiah 202 1 Edition Dr
Notes on Isaiah 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE AND WRITER The title of this book of the Bible, as is true of the other prophetical books, comes from its writer. The book claims to have come from Isaiah (1:1; 2:1; 7:3; 13:1; 20:2; 37:2, 6, 21; 38:1, 4, 21; 39:3, 5, 8), and Jesus Christ and the apostles quoted him as being the writer at least 21 times, more often than they quoted all the other writing prophets combined. There are also many more quotations and allusions to Isaiah in the New Testament without reference to Isaiah being the writer. Kenneth Hanna wrote that there are more than 400 quotations from or allusions to the Book of Isaiah in the New Testament.1 J. A. Alexander noted that 47 of the 66 chapters of Isaiah are either quoted or alluded to in the New Testament, and that the 21 quotations attributed directly to Isaiah were drawn from chapters 1, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 29, 40, 42, 53, 61, and 65.2 The only Old Testament book referred to more frequently than Isaiah in the New Testament is Psalms. "It would be difficult to overstate the importance of Isaiah for the Christology of the church."3 The name of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, is the only one connected with the book in any of the Hebrew manuscripts or ancient versions. Josephus, the Jewish historian who wrote at the end of the first century A.D., believed that Isaiah wrote this book.

  • Recent Work on the Old Testament Prophets
Recent Work on the Old Testament Prophets H. L. ELUSON THE LAST authoritative survey in English of movements in Old Testament studies was The Old Testament and Modern Study, produced in 1951 by members of the Society for Old Testament Study under the editorship of H. H. Rowley. It was in effect a survey of the main developments in the previous thirty years. The chapter on The Prophetic Literature was contributed by Prof. Otto Eissfeldt, the third edition of whose The Old Testament: An Introduction appeared in English translation in 1965. In the above mentioned chapter he began by pointing out that both the main works on prophecy and the main commentaries on the prophetic books that had appeared since 1880 still had great value. This was equivalent to saying that the foundations laid between 1880 and 1940 had been able to withstand attacks on them. He went on to stress, 'The new approach to the study of the prophets is limited to certain specified traits in them and in the books that bear their names'. The specific points he dealt with, apart from comments on outstand ing works on individual books, were three: cultic prophets, the origin and transmission of the prophetic books, and the supranormal ex periences of the prophets. The two former largely belong together, for mainly as the result of the work of G. Holscher (Die Propheten), Mowinckel and Haldar (Associations of Cult Prophets among the Ancient Semites) there had grown up the tendency to see all the prophets as linked with sanctuaries-that such prophets existed is indubitable, and we cannot a priori deny that some of the canonical prophets were linked with the temple in Jerusalem-and so the prophetic books were regarded as the products of groups of sanctuary prophets rather than of individuals, even if the one whose name is given to the book was a leading figure among them.

Isaiah, The Prophet And The Prophecy An Introduction To Isaiah The Gospel According To Isaiah Isaiah 1:1 Scripture quotations taken from the New American Standard Bible® (NASB), Copyright © 1960, 1962, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1973,1975, 1977, 1995 by The Lockman Foundation Used by permission. www.Lockman.org Whenever I start a new book of the Bible, either in a study or just for my own personal study, I find I always want to know a bit about the background of the book. Who is it that the Holy Spirit used to write the book? What do we know about the person that God is using? Isaiah, the man, was a prophet of God and we will see that his base of operations was in Jerusalem in the southern kingdom of Judah. In the book, Isaiah provides the vision or prophecy given to him by God. This prophecy includes the current, near future and far future of God’s people, the Jews. He deals with both kingdoms that were in existence during his life, the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Isaiah also spends a lot of time telling us about the Messiah, to include significant detail about His first and second coming. Isaiah also provides some history of events taking place in the region as well. The one thing I have learned over the years reading and studying this book is that Isaiah is a magnificent book to not only read, but to also study. I think Oswalt said it best about this book.
