Bhatt, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Understanding the life history events is a crucial factor in developing conservation and management approaches for any avian species. Nevertheless such studies on the avifauna of the Indian subcontinent are scanty. This paper deals with the breeding behaviour of the tropical avian species, the Pied Bush Chat, observed during 2008–2009 in district Haridwar, Uttarakhand state, India. Breeding activities commenced with the advent of spring (in late February) and continued till July. The peak in breeding activity (availability of maximum clutches) was observed in May. Males were found highly territorial during breeding season and delivered dawn chorus with immediate variety. Dawn chorus seemed to play a role mainly in maintenance and adjustment of social relationship among neighbouring males. Nest-site selection was performed by both the sexes and only female built the nest. Nest was a cup of grass and rootlets lined with finer grass and animal hair. Clutch size averaged 3.67 ± 0.47. Only females incubated and developed brood patch during incubation. Different factors such as predation, rain water overflow in nest, hatching failure were found responsible for the loss of eggs/young ones. Nestlings and fledglings delivered begging and contact calls respectively for being fed from parents. Both sexes fed the young and delivered alarm call on observing any predator nearby the nesting area. We observed pairs nesting in partially-developed human settlements also suggesting scarcity of natural nesting habitat due to urbanization in the study area. Место для гнезда выбирали оба партнера, но строила его только самка. Гнездо в виде чаши из травы и корешков с выстилкой из тонких травинок и волос. Самка откладывала 3 или 4 яйца. Средние размеры яиц 17.41 ± 0.35 × 13.58 ± 0.19 мм (n = 16), вес свежеснесенного яйца – 1.64 ± 0.09 г (n = 54). Средний размер кладки 3.67 ± 0.47 яйца. Насиживала их только самка. Птенцы вылуплялись в один день. Потери яиц и птенцов были связаны с хищничеством, затоплением гнезд во время дождей, гибелью эмбрионов во время насиживания. Кормили птенцов оба родителя. We performed a field experiment with the combination of playbacks and a model to test how much song actually relates to increased territorial defense in the territorial tropical songbird, the Pied Bush Chat, during breeding season (Feb–May, 2015) at Haridwar, Himalayan Foothills, India. As expected, the results of the experiment indicated that song was the major cue used by territory holders to cope with rival intrusions. The song rate was particularly escalated during simulated territorial interactions when the model was presented with a playback song of conspecifics. Behaviors such as restlessness (perch change), the height of perch, and distance from the model appeared to be of relatively lesser importance. To our knowledge, no avian species from the Indian subcontinent has been studied to provide evidence that song can escalate aggressive response by a territory owner.

The tour was based on a shortened version of our Birding Tours India: Western Ghats and Nilgiri Endemics January set departure tour but with a couple of slight modifications to fit the timescale available. During this tour we birded areas around Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Munnar, Eravikulam National Park, Ooty, Masinagudi, and Mudumalai National Park. A total of 226 bird species were seen (plus three species heard only). The main highlight birds of the tour were the Western Ghats and Nilgiri endemic species we saw, such as Nilgiri Blue Robin, Nilgiri Thrush, Nilgiri Pipit, White-bellied Blue Robin, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, Blue-winged (Malabar) Parakeet, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri and Palani Laughingthrushes, Grey- headed and Flame-throated Bulbuls, Grey Junglefowl, and many more. The region also plays host to a number of birds shared with neighboring Sri Lanka, such as Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Malabar Trogon, and Blue-faced Malkoha, and all were seen well. Other highlight birds included White-rumped and Indian Vultures, Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl, Mottled Wood Owl, Brown Fish Owl, Indian Pitta, Heart-spotted, White-bellied, and Streak-throated Woodpeckers, Indian Nuthatch, White-bellied Minivet, Indian Scimitar Babbler, Indian Black-lored Tit, Crimson-backed Sunbird, and the stunning Indian Blue Robin.

During the study period from 2007 – 2012, water samples taken from three sampling sites from the study areas viz., RBOD at Gharo, near Haleji Lake and near Keenjhar Lake were analyzed for physico-chemical parameters, pesticides and heavy metals. The mean salinity value of all sampling sites was recorded. RBOD at Gharo and RBOD near Keenjhar Lake showed high salinity value as per limit of World Health Organization standard. Water samples taken from RBOD near Keenjhar Lake showed pesticide OC compounds below the Maximum Acceptable Concentration (MAC). However, no serious adverse effects of environmental pollution were detected on the aquatic biodiversity except for some minor toxic effects due to the presence of heavy metals in water. Regarding biodiversity, two species of protozoans, 104 species of arthropods, 23 species of zooplanktons, 13 species of molluscs, 228 species of birds, 28 species of mammals, 31 species of reptiles, 2 species of amphibians and 59 species of fishes were recorded from the study areas.

THE GENERA ERITHACUS, LUSCINIA, AND TARSIGER The genus Luscinia was first merged with Erithacus by Seebohm (1881, Catalogue of the birds in the ... British Museum, vol. 5, p. 292), but this action was not followed. These two genera were merged again by Ripley (1952, Postilla, no. 13, pp. 1-48) in his recent review of the Turdinae in which he also enlarged Erithacus still further by the inclu- sion of Tarsiger. DNA was extracted from blood samples of C. dichroa (n = 18), C. natalensis (n = 47), and two phenotypic hybrids. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene was amplified by PCR and sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis was performed on the sequence data to investigate taxonomic status and putative interspecific hybridisation. Phenotypic hybrids grouped with C. natalensis, suggesting maternal parentage from that species. Intra- and interspecific genetic and geographic distances were compared between C. dichroa and C. natalensis to assess genetic introgression. Seven of the thirteen microsatellite primer pairs developed for C. natalensis cross amplified in C. dichroa. These seven markers were then used for further analysis. STRUCTURE v2.3.4 was used to assign individuals to a particular genetic cluster and determine any admixture. NEWHYBRIDS v1.1 was used to assign hybrid status to samples beyond the F1 generation. Despite the hybridisation events recorded between C. dichroa and C. natalensis they still form two separate clusters as expected, and two genetic clusters (K=2) were identified using STRUCTURE.

Miles In both the Old and New Worlds, independent clades of sit-and-wait insectivorous birds have evolved. These independent radiations provide an excellent opportunity to test for convergent relationships between morphology and ecology at different ecological and phylogenetic levels. First, I test whether there is a significant adaptive relationship between ecology and morphology in North American and Southern African flycatcher communities. Second, using morphological traits and observations on foraging behavior, I test whether ecomorphological relationships are dependent upon locality. Third, using multivariate discrimination and cluster analysis on a morphological data set of five flycatcher clades, I address whether there is broad scale ecomorphological convergence among flycatcher clades and if morphology predicts a course measure of habitat preference. Finally, I test whether there is a common morphological axis of diversification and whether relative age of origin corresponds to the morphological variation exhibited by elaenia and tody-tyrant lineages.
