The remark was directed in praise of the splendid series of views selected by Prof. Cromwell to illustrate his well-timed, semi- descriptive and quasi-humorous allusions to the many attractions which the scenery of the Rhine, the quaint architecture of such venerable German cities as Cologne, Coblenz, Mayence, and Frankfort...present to the traveler in that most interesting portion of the old world. His father's father, Ephraim Barnum, was a captain in the War of the Revolution, and was distinguished for his valor and for his fervent patriotism. -

Manning Oil portrait by Sidney F. Dickenson, 1931 Frank Pierce Carpenter (1846-1938) was born in Chichester, New Hampshire. He graduated from high school in Concord then moved to Manchester where he spent the rest of his life. As a young man he was involved in the grain business. In 1885 he purchased the Amoskeag Paper Company, located at the north end of the Amoskeag Millyard, which became his primary business pursuit. Mr. Carpenter was treasurer of the Mechanics Savings Bank and a director of the Amoskeag National Bank. He was also active on the boards of insurance companies and other corporations and was a director of the Boston & Maine Railroad. Mr. Carpenter is recognized as Manchester’s greatest philanthropist. He used his influence and wealth to benefit social, civic and cultural organizations. He gave generously to many Manchester organizations, and served on nonprofit boards. He had a particular interest in architecture. He served on the building committees for the Currier Gallery of Art (now the Currier Museum of Art) for the construction of its original 1929 building; the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company for the construction of its 1915 building on Hanover Street (now Fuller Hall of the New Hampshire Institute of Art), and the 1932 post office building on Hanover Street (now the offices of Devine Millimet law firm). -

This study takes an interdisciplinary approach by examining these exhibitions as a process, where an interdependent relationship based on the knowledge of familiar folk narratives is formed between the latent performer (seller), the pitchman (lecturer), the performer (display), and the audience. The presentation, marketing, and reception of these entertaining and unusual exhibitions are analogous to various forms of folklore, and therefore function in the same manner as folklore. -

Little Displays: The Photographs of Ricardo Gil Ann Millett, Ph.D. University of North Carolina at Greensboro Abstract: Ricardo Gil is a little person who photographs his family and lifestyle. I compare Gil’s images to images of little people drawn from fine art, the freak show, and popular culture. Gil’s photographs express dwarfism as an embodied perspective and subject position. Key Words: photography, dwarfs, representation “His photographs are deeply intimate, filled with the banal details of life and tempered by an engrossing self-examination as Gil, sometimes quite literally, measures himself against a larger world” (Miller, 1999). “The photographs in the folios are part of a larger collection entitled, "A View of My Own." I am a dwarf, as is my wife, and we are raising our average-sized daughter. Since 1991, I have documented my family and my perspective of the world. Thank you for visiting” (Gil, 1999-2003). Gil’s quote is the introduction to his website, which features photographs of himself, his wife, and his daughter in their daily family routine and on outings. He literally documents his perspective of the world, as the images show the embodied view of an individual who does not fit the “normal” world designed for the average-sized. Gil’s photographs, however, revel in the average, as they celebrate the mundane qualities of his everyday life. The actions and environments the images depict make his series resemble a typical family album of a not so typical family, of dwarf parents and an average-sized daughter, Lily. In Johann’s Kiss (1999; 2000), Gil spotlights his wife, Meg, sharing a moment of affection and praise in a kiss on the cheek with an average-sized man, who kneels down to her height. -

Barnum Research Collection represents archival materials collected by the Bridgeport History Center over the years relating to the life and ventures of P.T. Barnum. Barnum himself was deeply connected to Bridgeport, building four homes there, serving as mayor, and hosting his circus' Winter Quarters in the city. As a result, this collection represents both national and local history. The series in the collection relate to his personal life, the American Museum, Barnum's circus ventures, Jumbo the Elephant, Jenny Lind, and Charles S. Stratton and Lavinia Warren. Each series contains manuscript material including an extensive correspondence series in Barnum’s own hand, programs, tickets, artifacts, illustrations, and photographs, as well as clippings and examples of promotional material in the form of booklets, trading cards, and even paper dolls. This collection is artificial, and has grown over the years. The series themselves were formed by researcher needs, and as such have been kept intact at the time of arrangement.
