In consid­ ering the history of reform in the United States, they emphasized that the reform impulse which characterized the intellectual and social mood of the nation in the l830s, 40s and 50s did not expire with the firing upon Port Sumter, nor was it spontaneously resurrected when an assassin's bullet thrust Theodore Roosevelt into the White House. Rather, it was argued, the history of reform— to use Emerson's phrase, "the comparison of the idea with the f a c t — has formed an unbroken pattern in the stream of American history, and any attempt to assess its importance • in the historical process must acknowledge the fact.^ ^Works, Riverside ed. (Boston, 1888), I, p. 258 ("Lecture on the Times"). ^Gerald Grob, comments presented at the annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians, April 6, 1972 in a session on the subject "Humanitarianism in Nineteenth- Century America." 2 The evidence which has been amassed illustrating the existence of a wide variety of reform endeavors in the late nineteenth century is great enough that historians should never again allow themselves to simplify the history of that century by portraying it as an "Era of Romantic Reform" juxtaposed against an ensuing "Gilded Age. And yet, while acknowledging the continuity of the reform impulse in American history, there remain certain unique characteris­ tics which can be observed in the reforms and reformers of the period from 1820 to i860. This uniqueness appears both in the breadth of the reform impulse and also in the bouyant sense of optimism which accompanied it. ^In The Era of Reconstruction (New York, 1965) Kenneth Stampp has stressed the continuity between aboli­ tionism and post-Civil War Radical Republicanism (pp. 11- 105), and in The Populist Response to Industrial America (Cambridge, Mass., 1962) Norman Pollack argues persuasively that Populism in the late nineteenth century was not a con­ servative reaction but a well-defined reform effort rising ' out of the injustice which accompanied rapid industriali­ zation. The urban reform movement of the period is de­ scribed in detail in Harold U. Faulkner's Politics, Reform, and Expansion: 1890-1900 (New York, 1959) PP• 23-47. There was a very active temperance reform movement between 1865 and 1900 (see Herbert Asbury The Great Illusion [New York, 1950]), and largely neglected but active reform effort on behalf of the American Indian (see William T. Hagan, Ameri­ can Indians [Chicago, 1961]). The movement on behalf of women's rights continued throughout the period (see Gerda Lerner, The Woman in American History [Menlo Park, Calif., 1971]), 106-164, passim), and recent scholarship is bringing to light evidence of a number of experiments in communi­ tarian living, for example, John 0. Fish, "Communism in Georgia: The Christian Commonwealth Colony, I896-I900." unpublished manuscript delivered at the annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians, April 8, 1972. 3 The circumstances which encouraged the growth of this general optimism are numerous. English colonists brought with them to North America a tradition of natural rights and human equality. Such beliefs were nurtured by nearly a cen­ tury of "salutary neglect" on the part of the British, and were ultimately embodied In the "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" clause of the Declaration of Indepen­ dence. Two Important developments which gave significance to the rhetoric of enlightened liberalism were the purchase of the Louisiana Territory and the establishment of absolute control over the Old Northwest as a consequence of the War of 1812. The frontier had from the beginnings of American history encouraged a sense of equality of opportunity (which was often confused with equality of ability), and the guarantee of a seemingly Inexhaustible body of Inexpen­ sive land convinced Americans that In such an environment the most equitable and democratic of all possible govern- ments might be realized. Furthermore, In such an environ­ ment social Institutions and humanity Itself could antici­ pate the achievement of perfection.^ The author's comments regarding the nature of early nineteenth century reform have evolved from reading In a number of studies Including Arthur M. The Transeendentallsts: An Anthology (Cambridge, Mass., 1950), (cont'd) 4 The effect of the frontier upon the American mind was closely entwined with American religious patterns. It was on the frontier that evangelical religion was most success­ ful. During the 1820's Charles G. Finney began a long and Illustrious career as an evangelist, preaching a gospel which was In complete harmony with the optimistic political temper of the times. Finney's gospel placed a close rela­ tionship between salvation and good works. The achievement of Individual perfection would be evidenced by the dedica­ tion of the believer to the Improvement of the human condi­ tion. Finney's efforts spawned a large number of reformers (among them the famous mldwestern abolitionist, Theodore Weld), whose goal was the perfection of American Institu­ tions through the salvation and perfection of the American (cont'd) Wlnthrop S.     John and Judith Sargent Murray By Bonnie Hurd Smith Author of From Gloucester to Philadelphia in 1790: Observations, anecdotes, and thoughts from the 18th-century letters of Judith Sargent Murray Introduction In Russell Miller’s opening paragraph in The Larger Hope about John Murray’s 1770 arrival in America he writes, “Little did he realize that he was to be the instrument by which a new and unique religious body was to be created, denominated Universalism, which was to challenge the grim Calvinism inherited from sixteenth-century Europe. Neither was he aware that the denomination which he would eventually help to found in America was to offer the hope of a spiritual democracy for a new nation.” And what of democracy for women – spiritual and political? The historian Susan Branson calls Judith Sargent Murray “the most important female essayist of the New Republic.” While John was preaching, traveling, organizing, and generally spreading the “good news” of Universalism, as taught to him by James Relly, Judith was publishing essays, plays, and a three-volume book (The Gleaner, 1798) to spread the “good news” of female equality, improving female education, and the “new era in female history” that young women were forging. These two extraordinary people first met in 1774, when Judith’s father, Winthrop Sargent, invited John to preach in Gloucester to a small group of “adherents” to Universalism. At the time, Judith was a 23-year-old married woman. John was 33, a widower, and an itinerant preacher from England who had been traveling throughout the colonies since 1770. After meeting the Gloucester Universalists, who were well organized and committed to Universalism, John decided to make the seaport town his home.

BAILEY FROAI a sample of mud to the spirit of Socrates seems a far cry, yet seventy-five years ago the mud and the scholarly ghost of the ancient philosopher led to the founding of a wondrous city in the western end of X'ew York State. The city was to have been of unimaginable splendor and was to have ushered in a new civili- zation. Today its site is marked by a few circles of half-buried stones, and its memory is forgotten. Harmonia was the name of the dream city, and its cathedrals and stately halls were to have towered heavenward from the valley of the Kiantone, a small stream that rambles through a region of pastoral beauty but a few miles from Lake Chautauqua. Hither came, in 1852, a Milwaukee physician who, while in Xew York City, had heard of a spring of miraculous healing power on tke bank of Kiantone Creek and who "turned aside from my home- w^ard journey to examine the whole matter for myself," as he says. This Dr. Greaves was vastly impressed by what he saw and more particularly by what he was told. He learned that the curative value of the waters in the valley was known to the white settlers as far back as 1795 and to the Indians of a far earlier day. It was but a few years before the coming of Dr. Greaves that the two little Fox sisters at Hydesville, near Rochester, X^ew York, after becoming a village wonder with their rappings, had developed into the founders of modern Spiritualism, and during his visit to the Kiantone, Dr.

Mr. Potter had heard of a new religion called Universalism, that taught that God was too good to damn anyone to hell, and that every single person would be saved. !Now, in order for this story to make any sense, you have to realize that at that time, in that place, the accepted belief in the Puritan churches was that God would only save some people, and that no one knew who he would save, or why. Predestination was the word they used. The idea that God decided before you were born whether you would go to heaven or hell after you died. How you behaved on earth had nothing to do with it, although they did believe that people who were predestined for heaven probably would act well on earth. !But Thomas Potter didn’t believe this. Instead, he believed that God would save everyone. This was a pretty radical notion at the time. But Thomas Potter wasn’t a preacher. He was a farmer. And, while it’s true that some farmers could preach, Thomas Potter just couldn’t. !But he had faith. He had so much faith, that he built a church on his farm. A nice little wooden chapel. He said that someday God would send him a preacher to preach in this nice little church he’d built. He waited, and he waited, and he waited.

The 1986 discovery of manuscripts believed to have been lost prompted critics to evaluate anew Sargent Murray’s literary accomplishments. Previously unpublished poems and letters mark the prolific author as an important figure in early America’s self-conscious attempt to establish a national literature. This dissertation makes available Volume One of Sargent Murray’s poetry manuscript journals: two hundred and twenty previously unpublished poems and two that were published in The Massachusetts Magazine.

He was president of the Michigan Central Railroad from 1846 to 1855 ; of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad he was director from 1857 to 1898, and president from 1878 to 1881. In these positions his work was preeminently that of ob- taining capital and of maintaining a sound finan- cial policy ; the matters, to-day so important, of rate-making and relations with state and federal government practically never came within the scope of his control. Phillis Wheatley and Judith Sargent Murray: Revolutionary Founders in Women’s Political Activism and Women’s American Literary Tradition By Rebecca Warwick 1 Revolutionary War was a nation-wide struggle that catalyzed the changes taking place in nearly every aspect of women’s lives throughout the thirteen colonies. Many women were privy to the politics of the American Revolutionary War often by association through their husbands, sons, and male friends. Even so, it was the dominant belief, held by men and women alike, that women did not possess the capacity or intelligence for politics. Many perceived that they were strictly domestic beings, and therefore could not participate nor contribute to the inherently political war effort.1 Nonetheless, a few brave women such as Phillis Wheatley and Judith Sargent Murray insisted on participating in the political dialogue of their new nation.
