Friends Lucille Lortel and Eva Le Gallienne forged exceptional careers in the world of Eva Le Gallienne working on a script theatre. Galienne (1899 – 1991) was the first to perform a “flying Peter Pan” in 1928 and was with White Barn students, 1957. a co-founder of the American Repertory Theatre. Lortel (1900 – 1999) appeared on Broad- Courtesy, Lortel Foundation way in 1925 and later settled into married life. She returned to the theatre world in 1947 with the creation of the White Barn Theatrein Westport and also opened Theater de Lys in 1953 on in . She was pivotal in establishing Off-Broadway as an alternative to the commercial theatres in New York. Helen Sheehy has worked in theatre for three decades. Book Review selected Eva Le Gallienne (Knopf 1996) as one of its notable books of 1996. Sheehy is the author of biographies of Margo Jones, Eva Le Gallienne and Eleonora Duse. She has lectured at Lincoln Center, Yale Drama School, Amherst College and Westport Country Playhouse.

Alexis Greene is the author and editor of nine books about theatre and teaches several courses on women and theatre. She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her newest book is Front Lines: Political Plays by American Women, was published in 2009 by The New Press.
