Stacy Keach, Alice Ripley, Chita Rivera, Aaron Tveit, and More Receive Helen Hayes Awards Stacy Keach, Alice Ripley, Chita Rivera, Aaron Tveit, and More Receive Helen Hayes Awards The 2009 Helen Hayes Awards, honoring outstanding work in Washington DC area professional theatres, were presented in a live ceremony on Monday, April 13. Arena Stage's production of the musical Next to Normal, now on Broadway, was named Outstanding Non-Resident Production. The award for Outstanding Resident Musical went to Signature Theatre's revival of Les Miserables, while Outstanding Resident Play was given to both Studio Theatre's Blackbird and Shakespeare Theatre Company's Twelfth Night. Among the many acting winners were Stacy Keach (Frost/Nixon), David Margulies (The Happy Time), Alice Ripley (Next to Normal), Nilaja Sun (No Child ...), Natascia Diaz (ROOMS a Rock Romance), Chita Rivera (The Visit), Helen Carey (Major Barbara), and Aaron Tveit (Next to Normal). Aaron Tveit has won the Helen Hayes Award (Outstanding Supporting Performer, Non-Resident Production) and was nominated for the Lucille Lortel award, for his portrayal of Gabe in the Second Stage and Arena Stage productions of Next to Normal. His other credits include: Broadway: Wicked (Fiyero), Hairspray (Link). Off-Bway: Saved (Playwrights Horizons). Tours: Hairspray, Rent . Upcoming Broadway: Catch Me If You Can (Frank Jr). Film: Ghost Town, upcoming Howl. TV: "Hindsight" (Lifetime). NEXT TO NORMAL opened at Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre on February 13, 2008 and was significantly reworked in a subsequent out-of-town run at Washington D.C.'s Arena Stage, where it opened on December 10, 2008. The musical's unusual trajectory from a New York Off-Broadway premiere to an out-of-town regional theatre engagement and then back to Broadway is unprecedented. In his review of the Arena Stage production, Peter Marks of The Washington Post, wrote, "NEXT TO NORMAL is a moving, blisteringly honest, and inordinately powerful new musical, sung with a wallop by a six-member cast that includes the astonishing Alice Ripley, and dexterously directed by Michael Greif. Writers Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey have stocked the musical with beautiful songs that get to the heart of the story- and simply get to the heart." And Jayne Blanchard in The Washington Times called the show, "A transcendent production of a powerful new American musical with a bristling, contemporary rock score, smart lyrics and raw energy." Next to Normal is a contemporary musical that explores how one suburban household copes with crisis. With provocative lyrics and an electrifying score of more than 30 original songs, Next to Normal shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family's world intact. NEXT TO NORMAL received five Helen Hayes Award nominations for its Arena Stage engagement, including Outstanding Non-Resident Production, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production (Alice Ripley), Outstanding Lead Actor in a Non-Resident Production (J. Robert Spencer), and Outstanding Supporting Performer in a Non-Resident Production (Aaron Tveit and Jennifer Damiano). For its sold-out Second Stage Theatre engagement, NEXT TO NORMAL won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Score and also received the following accolades: Lucille Lortel Award nominations for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Featured Actor (Aaron Tveit), and Outstanding Lighting Design (Kevin Adams); Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Alice Ripley) and Outstanding Music; Outer Critics Circle Award nominations for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical and Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Alice Ripley); and a Drama League nomination for Outstanding Musical, among others. .

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The gay actor and singer Larry Kert originated the lead romantic role of Tony in the landmark 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story. With his expressive, vibrant tenor, he introduced some of the most memorable songs in the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score, including "Maria," "Tonight," and "Something's Coming." In 1970, Kert triumphed again on Broadway in another Sondheim musical, Company, as Robert, a New York bachelor observing the strains and tensions in the marriages of his best friends, as well as struggling to commit emotionally to each of his three girlfriends. Other Broadway shows involving Kert were unfortunately short-lived, and his later career was devoted mainly to cabaret, television, and regional theater. He was born Frederick Lawrence Kert in Los Angeles, California on December 5, 1930 into a comfortably middle-class family. His father was a jeweler and his mother an actress. He had a brother, Morton, and two sisters, Evelyn and the singer later known as Anita Ellis. He initially attended Hollywood High School but transferred to the Hollywood Professional School in Los Angeles. While still in school, Kert performed as an extra and stunt double in several movies, including Lassie Come Home (1943), where he was a stand-in for the film's star Roddy McDowell. After graduation, Kert took some classes at Los Angeles City College but soon dropped out and moved to New York City where he studied with the celebrated acting teacher Sanford Meisner.

Playwright and lyricist Brian Yorkey employs humor through funny lines and situations to balance and lighten the play’s serious and painful situations of human life. The music by Tom Kitt provides pleasure in itself. The music connects to the audience’s emotions in ways that simple spoken words cannot. Bringing these two masters together birthed this extraordinary, award winning masterpiece. Its story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and love-- both old and new. Next to Normal was nominated for 11 Tony Awards when it opened and was awarded 3 Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. In addition, it also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to do so. Centre Stage is partnering with the Greenville Health System in presenting two panel discussions during the run of this musical. The first discussion will be held after the 3PM matinee performance on Sunday, July 14 and the second one will be a 12PM Lunch & Learn on Friday, July 19th.     1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Relevant Soldier’s Play; Dated Bob and Carol David Sheward · Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 The twisted legacy of racism and shifting attitudes on sexuality are the diverse topics of two current New York stage offerings—a revival of A Soldier’s Play presented on Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company and a musical version of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice produced by The New Group at the Pershing Square Signature Center Off-Broadway. Both present material from previous eras with stark perspectives on how relevant they may still be. While one is still shockingly immediate, the other seems quaint and laughable. What’s not too surprising is that race remains a hot- button issue while unabashed examinations of carnality have passed into the passe. Blair Underwood in A Soldier’s Play. Credit: Joan Marcus Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 and searingly focuses on the corrosive effect of bigotry in the military and American society at large. After a hit Off-Broadway run presented by the Negro Ensemble Company, the suspense Cultural Daily - 1 / 5 - 03.08.2021 2 drama was adapted into a film called A Soldier’s Story, and then revived Off-Broadway in 2005. Fuller skillfully wraps his unflinching observations on racial animus and its poisonous influence into a taut murder mystery. In a 1944 training camp in the deep south, African-American officer Richard Davenport has been assigned to investigate the unsolved killing of career Army black sergeant Vernon Waters. At first, it appears white supremacists are the culprits since lynchings of African-American servicemen were not uncommon, but as Davenport delves deeper into the details of the case, he discovers a complex web of hate and resentment among the black soldiers fueled by institutional discrimination.

The 36th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards will feature an appearance by Bebe Neuwirth, Vice Chair, Board of Trustees, The Actors Fund, as well as Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Tracee Chimo Pallero, Edmund Donovan, Scott Elliott, Will Eno, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Bill Irwin, Francis Jue, Judy Kuhn, Grace McLean, Annette O'Toole, Larry Owens, Tonya Pinkins, Daryl Roth, Kristen Schaal, Jeremy Shamos, Susan Stroman, Jason Tam, and more; a brand-new performance choreographed by actor and dancer Reed Luplau; comedy sketches by the improv group The Foundation; a monologue by Phillip Taratula as Pam Goldberg; a musical performance by Crystal Monee Hall, Allen René Louis, and Michael McElroy; and an original song by Bobby Daye in memory of Off-Broadway community members who lost their lives this past year.
