The concerts will be broadcast each Tuesday, 8:30-9:30 E. S. T., under the sponsorship of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company. (WJZ) [si LEONARD BERNSTEIN (born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, August 25, 1918) attended the Boston Latin School and then Harvard College, graduating in 1939. He was at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia for two years, where he studied conducting with Fritz Reiner, orchestration with Randall Thompson, and piano with Isabella Vengerova. At the first two sessions of the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, he studied conducting with Serge Koussevitzky. He returned as his assistant in conducting in the third year of the School, 1942, and joined the faculty in the same capacity for 1946. In the season 1943-44, he was assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Society. He has appeared with many orches- tras as guest conductor, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra January 28, 1944 (when he conducted his "Jeremiah" Symphony), November 22, 1944, and March 22, 1946. In 1945 he became director of the New York City Symphony. He conducted as guest in Prague and London last summer. His ballets "Fancy Free" and "Facsimile" have been produced by the Ballet Theatre. He wrote the music for "On the Town," first performed in Boston December 13, 1944, and a success on Broadway. SYMPHONY IN C MAJOR, NO. 7 By Franz Schubert Born at Lichtenthal, Vienna, January 31, 1797; died at Vienna, November 19, 1828 Schubert wrote this posthumous symphony in 1828. What was probably its first performance was given at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, March 21, 1839, Felix Men- delssohn conducting. The first performance in America was by the Philharmonic Society in New York, January 11, 1851. The first performance in Boston was on October 6, 1852, with a small orchestra led by Mr. Suck. The Symphony is scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings. January 31 last marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Franz Schubert. It was a hundred six years ago that this symphony was resurrected and performed in Leipzig, at which time eleven years had passed since the composition of the symphony and the death of its composer. Schubert turned out six symphonies in his earlier composing years, from the time that, as a pupil of sixteen at the Konvikt (the school of the Imperial Choir at Vienna) he filled sheets with ready music for the small school orchestra in which he was a violinist. In 1816 he wrote his Fourth ("Tragic") Symphony and his Fifth (without trumpets and drums); in 1818, reaching his twenty-first year he pro- [4] ! The Man Who Lives in the Clouds Is this man you ? Final Symphony: The Ultimate Final Fantasy Concert Experience, the concert tour featuring the music of Final Fantasy VI, VII and X will make its debut this summer stopping in San Diego on Thursday, July 21 with the San Diego Symphony performing the musical score live on stage. Following sell-out concerts and rave reviews across Europe and Japan, Final Symphony takes the celebrated music of composers Nobuo Uematsu and Masashi Hamauzu and reimagines it as a fully realized, orchestral suites including a heart-stirring piano concerto based on Final Fantasy X arranged by composer Hamauzu himself, and a full, 45-minute symphony based on the music of Final Fantasy VII. “We’ve been working hard to bring Final Symphony to the U.S. and I’m absolutely delighted that fans there will now be able to see fantastic orchestras perform truly symphonic arrangements of some of Nobuo Uematsu and Masashi Hamauzu’s most beloved themes,” said producer Thomas Böcker. “I’m very excited to see how fans here react to these unique and breathtaking performances.     The Dallas Symphony Orchestra Presents: Beethoven at 250 January 22 and 23, 2020 Dear Fellow Educators, Ludwig van Beethoven lived a life driven by an unquenchable need to make music. On this, the 250th anniver- sary of his birth, the Dallas Symphony celebrates his legacy: music that still delights, challenges, and moves us. Consumed by a towering genius, he lived a life that was complex, inspired, unique, and difficult. But even when he was young, it was clear that he would leave a lasting impact. At the age of 17, Beethoven made his first trip to Vienna, the city that would become his home. There, he was quickly immersed in the life of Europe’s cultural capital, and played the piano for none other than Mozart. Mozart’s prediction: “You will make a big noise in the world.” At the dawn of the 19th century, the world was changing. The French Revolution had rocked Europe, Napoleon was rising to power, and every aspect of human life seemed to shift. It was an age of change in ideas, the arts, science, and the structure of society itself. Musically, Beethoven led the charge into a new century by replacing established Classical ideals with a wave of Romanticism, valuing imagination and emotion over intellect and reason. Music has never been the same since, and his many musical innovations paved the way for countless composers after him. Some of his string quartets, in fact, prompted one man to remark, “Surely you do not consider these works to be music?” Beethoven replied, “Oh, they are not for you, but for a later age.” He was right.

    1 FAUST A Humanities Seminar Fall 2015 Meets Mondays, 9:00-12:00 for 10 weeks: October 5 th - December 14th Steven D. Martinson, Ph.D. Professor and Director of Graduate Studies Department of German Studies (LSB 308) The University of Arizona [email protected] Course Syllabus Course Description “Faust” is alive and well. Emanations of “Faust” appear in literature and drama, painting and sculpture, opera and music, film and cyberspace. He has excited the human imagination for centuries and has permeated numerous cultures worldwide. But who was this mysterious alchemist or learned academician who dared transgress the borders of accepted knowledge and revel in the world of darkness which the Church condemned and against which it warned? Not only Adam and Eve, but also Faust ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Perhaps Faust has a place in the human spirit and representations of Faust’s divided soul have something to say about human history. In this Humanities Seminar we will consider a wide range of Fausts that populate German and European literature, art, opera, and music and American movies and videogames. We will also search him out by surfing the Internet. While we certainly will spend time reading Christopher Marlowe’s Tragical History of Dr. Johann Faust and listening to Charles-Francois Gounod’s Faust opera, Franz Liszt’s “Faust”-Symphony, and Richard Wagner’s Faust-overture, among other things, the main focus of the seminar is on those Fausts that are entrenched in German culture. Therefore, a significant part of the seminar is devoted to discussions of Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s Faust, including the often neglected second part of the drama.

Pre-concert conversations are sponsored by Washington University Physicians. 19 PROGRAM NOTES BY TIM MUNRO Outwardly, Felix Mendelssohn and Anton Bruckner could not be more different. Mendelssohn, a refined, cosmopolitan, bookish German, born into wealth. Bruckner, an unsophisticated, pious, conservative Austrian, born into a humble home. Mendelssohn, a child prodigy composer and performer, whose musical voice is present from the very first notes of his teenaged Octet. And Bruckner, a late- bloomer who did not find his unique style until well into middle age. Each is represented here by strikingly different works. Mendelssohn’s sparkling First Concerto is concise, crowded with drama. Bruckner’s towering final symphonic cathedral is epic, uncompromising. Yet, scratch the surface and these two are twinned. Both were old-fashioned in their time.
