Sciences and Technology Library Citing Data using ACS Style ACS Style Guidelines for Citing Data The examples below are suggested formats for citing data such as physical property data or spectra obtained from various types of resources. The ACS Style Guide provides a few examples for citing data but does not include examples of the wide variety of online sources that are available. The purpose of the citation is to provide sufficient detail so that someone else can locate the data. Page numbers may not exist when citing online sources of data and therefore it may be necessary to indicate information like the CAS Registry Number or the entry name so that someone else can locate the exact information that was cited. For more information consult the ACS Style Guide: Effective Communication of Scientific Communication, 3rd edition (Sciences and Technology Library Reference QD 8.5 A25 2006). Citation Examples for Citing Data Web Sites Web sites can be government sites, organization sites, course web sites or personal home pages. Some websites are considered databases and should be cited as a database. See the information on databases listed below. Databases include a reference number or other identifying information along with one or more search options. General Features of Web Sites: accessible on the Internet no page numbers information cited is located at the URL provided – no additional searching is required Where to Find Citation Information: Look at the About Us links, Contact Us links, Copyright link, copyright information at the bottom of the search screen, links with the word Citation or Cite. -

TRUST, BUT VERIFY: WHY THE BLOCKCHAIN NEEDS THE LAW Kevin Werbach† ABSTRACT The blockchain could be the most consequential development in information technology since the Internet. Created to support the Bitcoin digital currency, the blockchain is actually something deeper: a novel solution to the age-old human problem of trust. Its potential is extraordinary. Yet, this approach may not promote trust at all without effective governance. Wholly divorced from legal enforcement, blockchain-based systems may be counterproductive or even dangerous. And they are less insulated from the law’s reach than it seems. The central question is not how to regulate blockchains but how blockchains regulate. They may supplement, complement, or substitute for legal enforcement. Excessive or premature application of rigid legal obligations will stymie innovation and forego opportunities to leverage technology to achieve public policy objectives. Blockchain developers and legal institutions can work together. Each must recognize the unique affordances of the other system. 2001 ANNUAL REPORT DuPont at 200 In 2002, DuPont celebrates its 200th anniversary. The company that began as a small, family firm on the banks of Delaware’s Brandywine River is today a global enterprise operating in 70 countries around the world. From a manufacturer of one main product – black powder for guns and blasting – DuPont grew through a remarkable series of scientific leaps into a supplier of some of the world’s most advanced materials, services and technologies. Much of what we take for granted in the look, feel, and utility of modern life was brought to the marketplace as a result of DuPont discoveries, the genius of DuPont scientists and engineers, and the hard work of DuPont employees in plants and offices, year in and year out. Along the way, there have been some exceptional constants.
