The Treasure Principle Ch 2: Ahasuerus approves a plan to find a new queen by searching the The Treasure of Influence empire (25 mill women) for the most graceful & stunning woman. • Hanukkah and Purim: Similar Yet Different
Mon 7, 14, 21, 28 Nov 2016 / 6, 13, 20, 27 Heshvan 5777 B”H Dr Maurice M. Mizrahi Course for Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia Hanukkah and Purim: Similar yet Different Introduction -Hanukkah and Purim, the next two holidays, are not in Torah: Both are rabbinic. -Torah only has Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the three pilgrimage festivals – Pessah, Shavuot and Sukkot. -Both colorful – stay in mind of kids. -Both celebrate Jewish victory over persecution. -Both miraculous: We recite Al HaNissim on both. -Both so important rabbis turned their observance into post-Torah (rabbinic) commandments. YET: -The story of Purim has a book in the Bible (Esther), a tractate in the Talmud (Megillah) and a volume in the Midrash (Esther Rabbah). Hanukkah has none of them. It rates only a few mentions in Talmud [Shabbat 21a-24a], as an appendage to a discussion of what wicks and oils one can use for Shabbat lights. -The Book of Esther does not mention God, yet is in the Bible; the Books of Maccabees do, yet are not in the Bible. -The story of Purim is not known outside the Bible, yet is in the Bible. The events of Hanukkah are known outside the Bible, yet are not in the Bible. -Hallel (psalms of praise for God) recited on Hanukkah, but not Purim. -Hanukkah began with the physical (armed rebellion) and ended with the spiritual (rededication of the Temple). Purim began with the spiritual (prayer and fasting) and ended with the physical (armed resistance to killers). -On Purim, persecutors wanted to kill ALL the Jews.

THETHE SHOFARSHOFAR 7199 Tristan Drive Easton, MD 21601 410-822-0553 Rabbi Peter E. Hyman March 2019/Adar I-Adar II 5779 bnaiisraeleaston.org [email protected] From the Rabbi’s Desk Religious Services I begin this sermon with a verse from the Book of Proverbs that is both engaging and a bit unusual. Proverbs 24:26 Saturday, March 2, 10:00 a.m. Torah Portion: Vayak'hel tells us, “An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.” Exodus 35:1-38:20 What is the relationship between an honest answer and a Haftarah: II Kings 11:17-12:17 kiss on the lips. Our sages offer both insight and explana- tion... Friday, March 8, 6:00 p.m. First they say, Just as a kiss on the lips is relatively rare, Torah Portion: Pekudei so too it is relatively rare to hear completely true and Exodus 38:21-40:38 Haftarah: I Kings 7:51-8:21 honest answer. 2. Just as the kiss on the lips means more than the kiss on the cheek, even Saturday, March 16, 10:00 a.m. so an honest answer is a mark of true sincerity and personal integrity. Torah Portion: Vayikra 3. Just as a kiss on the lips can be and should be deeply satisfying to the Leviticus 1:1-5:26 heart, even so an honest answer is satisfying to the soul. Haftarah: I Samuel 15:1-34 Friday, March 22, 6:00 p.m. This verse not only underscores the wisdom of Scripture, but also speaks to Torah Portion: Tzav the social and political atmosphere in which we find ourselves right Leviticus 6:1-8:36 now...today.

  • Bigthan and Teresh VT 62
Vetus Testamentum Vetus Testamentum 62 (2012) 318-356 brill.nl/vt Bigthan and Teresh and the Reason Gentiles Hate Jews Noah Hacham* Hebrew University of Jerusalem [email protected] Abstract The account of Bigthan’s and Teresh’s conspiracy against the king (Esth 2:21-23) was transposed in the Septuagint to Addition A, which opens the book, while an additional story regarding a conspiracy to kill the king was introduced, in its stead, at the end of chapter 2 of this translation. These moves are part of Greek Esther’s reworking of the story in order to depict Mordechai as faithful to the king, and Haman as the king’s adversary who seeks his downfall, and to suggest that this contrast explains Haman’s animosity toward Mordechai, and the Jews, who are loyal to the throne. This tendency, to accentuate the Jews’ allegiance to the gentile monarch while under- stating the contrasts between Jews and gentiles, is widely manifested throughout Greek Esther. Its objective is to assert that gentile hatred of the Jews derives from their loyalty and reflects, in effect, hatred of the king. The historical backdrop to Esther, reworked in this manner, is most probably Egypt at the beginning of the first century BCE, when the extent of Jewish involve- ment within the Ptolemaic court and military was considerable. Keywords LXX Esther, Bigthan and Teresh, Haman, Mordechai, loyalty, anti-Semitism, Jewish diaspora in Ptolemaic Egypt I. Introduction The Septuagint to Esther contains six or seven large additions to the MT,1 alongside many modifications and small adaptations.

  • Truths to Live by Esther 2:18-23
Truths to Live By Esther 2:18-23 I’ve never made it a secret that I listen to country music and Prime Country is my station when I’m in the mood for some George Strait or Brooks and Dunn or Alabama. I could try to be super-spiritual and tell you that the only music that I listen to is Christian-themed, but that would be a lie. I listen to Christian music, but not all the time. Eventually you’re going to ride in my truck and it’s going to be tuned into Prime Country or I’m going to be whistling “He Stopped Loving Her Today” or I’m going to confess that me and Pat spent the money for the tickets to Dollywood while we were on vacation. Somewhere along the way the truth is going to come out because the truth has the power to stand on its own. It is always best to just be honest about who you are and then let others make up their own minds about whether they accept that or not. Mordecai can ‘hide’ the fact that he and Hadassah (Esther) are Jews all that he wants, but somewhere along the way the truth will come out. Honesty should have been the policy. So, God is about to take this new ‘opportunity’ that has come Esther’s way and use Mordecai to reveal truth even though that at the time, he had no clue what God was doing. I. SIN IS NEVER SATISFIED Vss. 18-19a (a) The Marriage Supper: I’m always interested in what the bridal party will have on their menu at the reception.

  • Summary of the Purim Story in 550 Words
Summary of the Purim Story in 550 words Ahasuerus was a rich, powerful King. He throws a huge party. After lots of drinking he calls for Vashti his Queen to appear in her royal crown. She refuses and, as instructed by his advisers, he exiles her for fear she will set a bad example to other women. He holds a beauty pageant to find a new wife, and Ester (who was an orphan looked after by her uncle Mordechai) was presented and won. She doesn’t admit to the king she is Jewish. Mordechai goes to the palace every day to see how she is. Whilst there he overhears Bigthan and Teresh plotting to overthrow the King. He tells Ester who reports back to the King. These two were hanged. The King promotes Haman and everyone has to bow to him, Mordechai refuses, enraging Haman. Haman plots to kill all the Jews and gets the King to agree to it because they have different laws. Lots are drawn and a date is set to kill all the Jews. Mordechai and the Jews mourn at the news. Ester sends a message to Mordechai to find out why he was mourning. Mordechai tells her and says that maybe that is why she is Queen; to save her people. Ester calls for all the Jews to fast for 3 days and does so herself. After this she invites the King and Haman to a banquet. At this banquet she invites them to another one the next day. Haman spots Mordechai who still won’t bow to him which makes him angrier.
