2 GREEN TYPE = Notes on the Music BLUE TYPE = Stage Directions/Production Notes RED TYPE = Narrator PURPLE TYPE = Art Card for the Video & Title Pages for the Enchanted Purim Storybook

We are creating a companion “storybook” PDF of the Enchanted Purim Storybook that audiences can download if they want to follow along with lyrics/want a souvenir. This could be much less work that doing captions for all lyrics in the video and will be really cool. A separate copy and illustration document will be provided for the Storybook. In summary it will include: • The Cover • The opening spread with the Characters in order of the narrator introducing them • And for each song “chapter” - an illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering for example Chapter 4 will read “The Ball at the Palace” with the illustration of The Palace and some Wine bottles and glasses • The Cast/Band Production List • The End (see you next year)

IMPORTANT PRODUCTION NOTE: For scenes with Persians and Jews where we are not shooting on location, we will provide in advance an image (photo or illustration for everyone to use as their Zoom background. We will need everyone to download the update of ZOOM and we will need to hold a training on use of ZOOM and filming at one of our rehearsals. There are 4 songs where the entire chorus is singing generally just the finale. For safety’s sake these will be captured on video individually form homes (like for High Holidays) and will be edited in as (Hollywood Squares).

The Song List/Plot Outline NOTE: The recordings used (syllable count, timing, etc.) for this Schpiel are all compiled in the SPOTIFY play list: Enchanted Schpiel – curated by Eric Friedenwald-Fishman: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6Gm4m6Uklzrf2L35JX1tw6?si=WIGnyGFyRwu5FizOpx9S5A

Below, we list who is in each number. In the numbers that have both Persians and Jews cast members wear either the RED or BLUE depending upon if they are a Persian or a Jew. Scenes that are Persians Only or Jews Only are for the entire chorus wearing the appropriate vest color.

1. Overture & Setting the Scene (Page 7): The narrator introduces the Kingdom of Shushan 481 BCE, the people (Persians and Jews and each of the key characters – with just a bit of context and some humor). Like in many classic Disney movies the narration is filming a close up of a classic story book as the narrator reads the opening and between each scene. This gives us an easy transition devise between songs AND allows a way to carry the audience through the story line and into “different Disney worlds” from the movies we are pulling the most popular songs from Disney movies. Instrumental: When you wish upon a star, Once upon a Dream, Part of your world

2. Introduction of the Characters in the Kingdom of Shushan (Page 9): The ability for Jews to live and worship as they please AND the impending threat of Haman. The Jews of Shushan - Happily Sing “Baruch Atah Adonai” a slight squeeze of inflection to be (Hakuna Matata – Lion King). This number includes kids and kids-at-heart (congregants who sent in their 1-line video of the chorus). (Mordi, Esther, The Rebbe of Shushan, + cameo stills by congregants and possibly some choir members)

3. King A & Others praise themselves (Page 11): King A happily takes credit for how cool he is and how awesome Sushan is by singing: You’re Welcome (Moana) (solos by other members of the Shushan community share their own self-aggrandizing perspective) (King A, the Mohel of Shushan, the Bagel Baker of Shushan, Mordi, Haman, )

4. We learn of how “mal” Haman is (Page 14): Haman and her general ill-will, hatred of the Jews and desire for the throne is introduced with “Haman” (Gaston – Beauty and the Beast) (Bigthan, Teresh, Haman, Persian solos #1 Libby - #2 Scott - #3 Rebecca H - #4 Judy Cappelman)

5. The Party (Page 17): King A. throws a party and demands that Vashti Dances – she refuses and is killed. Vashti and her Lady in Waiting sing I’ll Just Say No (How Far I’ll Go - Moana). (King A. Haman, Vashti, Vashti’s Lady in Waiting: Gillian + Persian soloists with opening sighs)

6. Cheering the King with the concept of a Contest (Page 18): Hamon and the Persians convince the bereaved King to hold a Beauty Contest. They convince him that having a beautiful wife is 4 simply taking care of “The Bare Necessities.” King A. gets excited by the idea and makes this number a mash-up by singing the final chorus of “Someday My Queen Will Come” (Page 21) (Someday My Prince Will Come – ) (King A. Haman, Bigthan, Teresh, Persian solos #4 Andrew - #5 Jim - #6 Paul)

7. The Contest (Page 21): The most beautiful and confident women in Persia (pageant finalists including Esther) have a sing-off showing how determined they are to win (and showing off for King A) with “I Just Can’t wait to be Queen.” (I Just Can’t Wait to the King – Lion King). (King A., Haman, Bigthan, Teresh, Finalist #1 Anastasia, Finalist #2 Drizella, Mordi, Esther, Chorus ALL as Jews)

8. The King and Esther Fall in Love and seek a new world (Page 24): King A. selects Esther, crowns her Queen and the new love birds talk of how together they will create “A Whole New World.” Esther demonstrates that she plans to move the Kingdom toward justice and could be an obstacle to Haman’s plans. Mordi and King A. piss-off Haman by celebrating the King’s marriage at the end of the song. (King A. and Esther)

9. Haman’s Plot (Page 26): Hamon and her hench-people lay out her murderous plot to kill the Jews and to Kill the King with “Be Prepared” (Lion King) while Mordi (hidden) overhears EVERYTHING. (Haman, Bigthan, Teresh, King A., Persians [small chorus], Mordi, Chorus ALL as Persians)

10. Convincing Esther and Planning the Invitation (Page 29): Mordi tells of Haman’s plot and steels the courage of the Jews and Esther with “We’ll Make a Mensch Out of You.” (I’ll Make a Man Out of You – Mulan). This includes the iconic line: “let’s get down to business and defeat Haman!” (Mordi, Esther, Jewish solos #1 Cory - #2 Don - #3 Shaina + the Just a Little Something Baker, the Knish Maker and the Fish Monger as Jewish Chorus, Chorus ALL as Jews)

11. Hamon and the Persians build the gallows (Page 31): They sing of their hate “Heigh- Ho” including “ to build the gallows we go.” (Snow White). (Haman, Bigthan, Teresh + five Persians = Haman and the Seven Ethical Dwarfs including 2 solos Persian solos #7 Michelle - #8 Vicki + the Ethical Dwarf Choir: Donna and Anita)

12. The Invitation (Page 33): Esther and her entourage (great solos for choir members) invite the King and Hamon to Dinner with “Be Our Guest.” (Beauty and the Beast) Esther, The Just a Little Something Baker, the Knish Maker, the Fish-Monger and the Bagel Baker of Shushan + King A. and Haman

13. The Undoing of Haman (Page 35): Esther Mordi and the Jews do the big reveal and dispense with King A’s concern that she is Jewish with “Let it Go” with Hamon’s plot with “ Let it Go” and with the animosity between the Persians and Jews with “Let it Go.”(Frozen) Esther, Mordi, King A, Haman, Bigthan, Teresh, + if safe the Jewish Cooks Choir

5 14. Curtain Call (Page 37): Credits to instrumental of “Under the Sea” (Little Mermaid) + Thank Yous from the Rabbi. (Entire Cast)

15. And what about Next year????????? (Page 39): The traditional we will have a new Schpiel for you (including a line that makes it clear we plan to be live and in person). “There’s a Real Live Schpiel in Sight.” (Can you feel the Love Tonight – Lion King) (Solos: Esther, Haman, King A, Mordi, Bigthan + Chorus ½ as Jews & ½ as Persians)

The Script

1. Overture NOTE: Introduces context with slides and cast walk-ons. Instrumental: When you Wish Upon a Star, Once Upon a Dream, Part of Your World. Total narration time for Intro/Overture Medley is 4:28. Individual timing for each section/character of the intro are below IF we want to match some themes to characters.

MUSIC (INSTUMENTAL) PLAYS AS STORY BOOK PAGES TURN WITH OUR CHARACTERS PICTURES TO SET THE CONTEXT AND FAMILURIZE THE AUDIENCE WITH THE CHRACTERS AND BASICS OF THE SHOW.

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “Once Upon A Time there was a kingdom with a royal city called Shushan. ”

NARRATOR: Once Upon A Time - well actually 2,521 years ago - in a Magical Kingdom far, far away - well actual just about 7,000 miles away - there was a palace in the royal city of Shushan. (:17)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “Once Upon A Time there was a kingdom with a royal city called Shushan. ” with an image of the Palace.

NARRATOR: And this city was ruled by King Ahasuerus who is also known as King A. (so his name works in songs that need fewer syllables). While he does let everyone worship as they please, his kingdom is

7 in trouble. The King has a drinking problem, a temper problem and a chauvinism problem. Like so many fairy tales he is also under the influence of a scheming and evil Grand Vizier. (:28)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “King Ahasuerus” with an image of the King with a bottle.

NARRATOR: Haman is the wicked and power-hungry Grand Vizier. She insists that everyone bow to her and hates the Jews and their leader Mordechai who will only bow to Adonai. She hates the King whom she plots to kill so she can take the crown AND she hates anyone who gets in the way of her malicious plans. She also loves the prefix “mal” as in malicious, malign, maladjusted and Maleficent. It means bad, ill, wrongful and some credit Haman with originating it’s use. She is a proud descendant of the original Biblical bad guy: Amalek. Like all storybook villains, the only person she does not hate is herself. And like all story book villains (and authoritarian leaders) she has bamboozled a band of followers including her two dastardly and none-too-bright sidekicks Bigthan and Teresh. (:60)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “The Evil Grand Vizier Haman and her henchmen Bigthan and Teresh” with an image of Haman with his befuddled Henchmen Teresh and Bigthan on either side.

NARRATOR: A potential thorn in Haman’s side would be the beautiful, smart and strong Queen Vashti who is known throughout the land for her dancing, her wisdom and her support for women’s rights. But, her ability to stop Haman would only be true in a fairytale where the King actually listens to her - and this is not that much of a fairytale. (:27)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “The Beautiful and Resolute Queen Vashti” with an image of Vashiti holding up an open scroll with huge lettering that reads “and yet, she persisted.”

NARRATOR: An actual thorn in Haman’s side is Mordechai often referred to as Mordi (like King A - so it works in songs that need fewer syllables). Mordi is the leader of the Jewish community, a wise man and good citizen who is known for giving good advice. He also has a knack for being in the right place at the right time to learn of trouble and danger. Who do you think was hiding behind the magic mirror and saw the poison the apple? – Oh, but that’s also a different story. (:34)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “The Wise and Righteous Mordechai” with an image of Mordi seeing maleficent and the evil Queen and the poison apple.

NARRATOR: The people of Shushan. Mostly good, hard-working folks who are dedicated to their crafts, their families and their community. The Jews of Shushan wear Blue vest and the Persians wear Red vests partially due to community identity - but mainly so you can tell them apart in this Fairytale. But just like an entire kingdom could fall under Maleficent’s spell, many of the Persians have been put under Haman’s evil spell of bigoty and hate. (:32)

8 Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “The People of Shushan” with an image of Persians and Jews in their Blue and Red Vests under a fairytale banner that says “Shushan.”

NARRATOR: And of course the shero of our tale, Esther (whose real name is Hadassah). She is the most beautiful maiden in the land, smart as can be and the bravest person in the Kingdom. Even though she does not have an evil stepmother or stepsisters, she is an orphan who lives with her kind Uncle Mordechai. And in another coincidence, she always wears a simple house dress and white apron and then changes into a gown worthy of a Disney Princess for the beauty contest, kind of like Cinderella from the neighboring kingdom - but – you guessed it – that is a different story. (:40)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “Brave and Beautiful Esther” with an image of Esther with a cute Disney bird on her finger just like in Cinderella.

NARRATOR: Now that we have met all of the characters in this classic storybook, let’s turn the page and take inspiration from the whole of this fairytale - that when we act upon our values and stand up for each other…dreams really do come true. (:19)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “When We Stand Together, Dreams Really Do Come True” with an image of beautiful fireworks over travelogue postcard image of the Palace with the word “Shushan” underneath it.

And as they do every morning, the Jews of Shushan led by say praise to G-d or we like to say A-do-nai. (:27)

Walking in the Plaza at CBI, Haman also in the Plaza at CBI, The Mohel in 11 a doctors coat and ideally in a hospital hallway, the Baker in their kitchen possibly spreading schmear or mixing dough.

NARRATOR and companion “Storybook” PDF: Now the Jews are not the only ones who appreciate the storybook possibilities of Shushan. In fact, nearly everyone in Shushan from the King and his plotting Grand Vizier, to the sure-handed Mohel and the Kingdom’s award-winning bagel baker, feels a celebratory sense that their talents deserve thanks and often say an enthusiastic, “you’re welcome!” (:31)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “All Across Shushan People are Thankful and Boastful – You’re Welcome!”

King A: Ok, ok, I see what’s happening here You’re face to face with kindness and its strange Far from here, they would make you kneel They’re deplorable! Well it’s nice to see that peasants they can change Say your thanks let’s begin Yes, it’s really me, it’s King A Breathe it in I know it’s a lot The staff, the crown When you’re standing close to such renown What can I say except, you’re “welcome” To my food, my drink, my song Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay You’re welcome I just help everyone to get along

Haman: Hey Who sees through the Jews and sees all their lies When King A’s just being a pal? This gal! When they will not bow Who howls “All Jews now get down low!” You’re lookin’ at her, yo Oh, also I demean “the One” You’re welcome (whispers) To spread hate and fear just for fun Also their Torah I’ll seize You’re welcome To shake their faith and bend their knees

12 The Mohel of Shushan: [Steve Seres] So what can I say but hey your welcome For the snip that’s so fast you can’t see Go ahead and pray, it’s okay You’re welcome ‘Cause Shushan’s got a cool mohel – it’s me! You’re welcome You’re welcome

You’re nuts. What’s the lesson What is the take-away Don’t skimp on the schmear for your child’s bar mitzvah-day! And the poppy seed layer so thin Is a flavor that always will win Look at my skill I make everything happen Look at this keen bagel baker just tickety-tappin’ (Ha ha ha ha ha ha, hey) Well, any way let me say, “you’re welcome” (Haman & Esther: you’re welcome) For the chewy bagels you know Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay you’re welcome (Haman & Esther: you’re welcome) And better yet, you can get them to go (hey)

King A: Hey, it’s your day to say, “You’re welcome” (Haman & Esther: you’re welcome) I’m King of all I can see I’m loving today, today, you’re welcome (Haman & Esther: you’re welcome) ‘Cause I’m throwing a mind-blowing party (Haman & Esther: you’re welcome) You’re welcome (Haman & Esther: you’re welcome) You’re welcome And thank you.

13 4. Haman (Gaston)

Note: Recording is the Disney Beauty and the Beast (animated)with Richard White and Jesse Corti

Background Music for Narration “Gaston”.

NARRATION: Well, all is not as storybook-happy as one might think in this fairytale kingdom. Haman is furious that the King lets the Jews worship and addict the local population to such insidious substances as bagels with lox schmear! She lashes out at Mordi, but like every bully Haman reverts to seeing herself as the victim and nursing her own grudges. But her sycophantic sidekicks Bigthan and Teresh cheer her up and goad her on by stroking Haman’s ever-delicate ego. (:44)

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTES: Haman and her crew bolster each other’s hate and egos from various locations in the palace courtyard (either filed at Pioneer Courthouse square with Hamon on the balcony over hang and the others in various spots below - OR – at CBI using the balcony window in the Schnitzer building and the sidewalk/street below.

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “No One Hates Like Haman”

Bigthan: (spoken) Darn Right!

Haman: (spoken) Dismissed. Rejected, Publicly humiliated, Why, it’s more than I can bear.

Teresh: (Holding up a “Fear the Other” and smiling about their smart and time-tested suggestion) (spoken) More Fear?!?!

Haman: (spoken) What for? Nothing helps. I’m disgraced.

Bigthan: (spoken) Who you? Never! 14 Haman, you’ve got to pull yourself together.

(Singing) Gosh it disturbs me to see you Haman Looking so down in the dumps. Every Jew will learn to fear you, Haman For sure when taking your lumps.

Teresh: There’s no one in town as reviled as you You’re everyone’s least trusted gal Everyone’s cowed and recoils from you You e-pit-o-mize the prefix, “mal”

Zethar (Persian 1 Solo): [Libby Schwartz] No one’s slick as Haman No one’s sick as Haman No one’s as good at big dirty tricks as Haman Everyone else in town is a has-been Perfect, her hate is axiom You can ask any Farshid or Yasmin And they’ll tell you whose team they prefer to be on No one’s slick as Haman No one’s sick as Haman No one has a more malicious grin than Haman

Haman: As the Grand-Vizier, yes, I’m intimidating

Bigthan and Teresh: My what a gal is Haman! Give Five “Huzzahs” Give Twelve “Shazams””

Bigthan: The Jews are kaput, give it up for Haman!

Carcas (Persian 2 Solo) [ Scott Schaffer]: No one hates like Haman Busts-in pates like Haman And, oh nobody intimidates like Haman For there’s no one as squirrely and smarmy

Haman: (giving his best disdainful and loathing look) As you see I have loathing to spare.

15 Teresh: Not a bit of her kindly or funny

Haman: (spoken) That’s right. (sings) Once I’m done with the Jews – then the King I’ll ensnare

Harbona (Persian 3 Solo) [ Rebecca Hill ]: No one hits (punches hand with fist) like Haman Or throats slits (dramatically draws finger across their neck) like Haman No one shows the Jews to the exits like Haman!

Haman: (proudly) I’m especially good at excommunicating (slide whistle or other sound effect)

Harbona (Persian 3 Solo) [ Rebecca Hill ]: Build the wall Haman!

Haman: When I was a kid, I killed bugs with a fork Every morning to help me get mean And now that I‘m grown, I make Jews suck on pork So, come sign-up for my alt-right team!

Shethar [ Judy Cappelman ]: Who likes brutes like Haman?! Starts disputes like Haman?!

Bigthan and Teresh: Then goes tromping around in jackboots like Haman!

Haman: I use hate-speech in all of my agitating

Teresh and Bigthan (and, if safe, Persian Soloists): Say it again! Who puts fear into men? And then say it once more Who’ll keep Jews on the floor? Who drives bigots’ success? Don’t you know can’t you guess? Who came up with the most evil plan? There’s just one gal in town Who will kill for the crown

16 Teresh: And her name H- A – M … A? H-A-M-A -O M? H-A-M-I-N …? Oh…

Note: Recording is the Deluxe Edition Soundtrack Disney Moana with Auli’i Cravalho

Background Music for Slide Narration and bored Persian solo “sighs” How Far Ill Go, Instrumental introduction on repeat

Narration and companion “storybook” PDF: Back at the royal palace, the King is throwing a ball so the prince can select a wife, perhaps a young woman who loses a glass slipper – oh, wait a minute, that is a different fairy tale, different palace and a different King. In our tale, King A. is throwing a party but this is more of the drinking and womanizing variety than the giant pumpkin turned into a carriage type of party. Now as you know, the King is upset that the party is going slow and orders his beautiful Queen Vashti to dance and entertain his guests. While she probably wishes she had a fairy godmother to make this all go away, as we said, that is a different story, so she will just have to stand up for herself. (:51)

STAGE DIRECTION: Opens with 3-5 shots of Persians drunk with wine glasses/bottles and bored beyond tears each making a big “sigh” (ideally filed in solo slots all on the bima during filming days but also all could be sent in and using the same ZOOM background we provide. Edited as a Sequential montage.

King A, Haman, Vashti and Vashti’s Lady In Waiting are at the party as the last sigh ends King A is ordering Vashti to Dance.

King A: I’ve thrown the biggest party in our border ‘Long as I remember, only boredom’s causing sighs I wish for you to dance – that’s an order I need a sexy performer, give peeling-off scarves a try!

Vashti: 17 Every leer you make, every shame you task Every choice I make, every slight you ask Here is what I know, there I will not go, No, you will not see Cross that line where you take pride from me? It galls me And you will know, they’ll be no show! If these drunk and rude boys in your crew peep behind me My rage will grow, and you know you don’t want to face me toe-to-toe

Vashti’s Lady in Waiting solo [Gillian Rosicky ]: I know everybody at this party, seems so bored at this party Perhaps, they drank too much wine. I know everybody at this party, has a goal at this party But demeaning you is not fine.

You can stand with pride, you are brave and strong Don’ be satisfied, don’t you play along And the voice inside says, “keep your sarong!” No they will not see!!!

Vashti: I have the right to be pure and free – it’s binding But here it goes – I will say, “No” And it seems like you’ll never let me be, now you mind me And let me go, don’t abuse that line, will you cross that line? The line that objectifies me? It galls me! And now you know, they’ll be no show! For the wind of my breath I do plea, you maligned me But now you know, I just said, “No.”

Music continues (Instrumental) during the sentencing of Vashti Pantomime

STAGE DIRECTION: King A. points to Vashti, makes the universal slit throat sign and with a wave of his hand signals off with her – FADE.

Haman doesn’t lose a second to see an opportunity to further influence the King and convinces him to hold a beauty contest to find a wife. For in Haman’s own words, a beautiful queen is one of the simple bare necessities of life! (:34)

7. I Just Can’t Wait to be Queen (I Just Can’t Wait to be King)

Note: The recording for I Just Can’t Wait to be King is the Walt Disney Pictures presents The Lion King Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with Jason Weaver, Rowan Aktinson, Laura Williams – animated movie

Note: Background during the narration is violin and piano of Someday My Prince Will Come. After the narration ends 1 beat and the drums/intro to I Just Can’t Wait to be King starts.

Narration and companion “storybook” PDF: Of course no fairytale is complete without royal pageantry. And what pageantry could be more royal than a beauty pageant where the prize is to become the Queen. Haman and his sidekicks have sent word of the contest far-and-wide. Beauties from across the land have entered. Some say, Haman cheated to have her two evil step-daughters make it to the final round (but that also sounds like it could be from a different story). We do know that the finalists included Anastasia of Persepolis and Dirzella of Sardis.

We also know that Mordi (to some degree playing the part of the Fairy Godmother) has encouraged Esther to enter the contest and seek to win the heart of the King. Now, Esther has changed out of her Cinderella apron and into a beautiful ballgown (rumor has it- but it is not in the Megillah - that birds and mice with Hester Street tailoring skills helped with the dress) AND she has made it to the finals. We join the pageant’s final round: The Great Shushan Sing-Off. (1:10)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “The Beauty Contest at the Royal Fair” with a picture of The Palace with the Banner underneath reading – “Royal Beauty Contest.” When the Narrator mentions Anastasia and Drisella their pictures appear and when the Narrator mentions Esther we return to the image of the palace.

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: The contest is a series of four short vignettes: • Contestant #1 the self-confident Anastasia of Persepolis sings to and receives asides and commentary from King A. • Contestant #2 the fiercely independent Drizella of Sardis sings to and receives asides and commentary from King A.

21 • King A and Haman hold an exchange with the King expressing worry about who he might end up with and Haman giving an aside that all is according to plan • Esther arriving on the scene, stealing the spotlight, the show and the King’s Heart with Mordi and some of the Jews + King A joining in in jubilation. • In this number the full chorus ALL as Jews join at the end (Hollywood Squares)

Finalist #1 Anastasia of Persepolis [ Jewely Sandoz ]: I’m gonna be a mighty queen So Drisella beware

King A: (aside) Well, I’ve never seen a Persian queen With quite so flame-red hair

Finalist #1 Anastasia of Persepolis: I’m gonna be the monarchist Like no queen was before I’m brushing up on looking down Oh, me you will adore!

King A: (aside - bored) Thus far a rather uninspiring scene

Finalist #1 Anastasia of Persepolis: (with unbridled confidence) Oh, I just can’t wait to be queen!

King A: (to Haman) We’ve got a rather long way to go, Grand Vizier, if you think …

Finalist #2 Drizella of Sardis [ Leslie Robinson ]: No one saying, “do this”

King A: (aside) Now when I said, we …

Finalist #2 Drizella of Sardis: No one saying, “be fair”

King A: (aside)

22 should hold this …

Finalist #2 Drizella of Sardis: No one saying, “be nice”

King A: (aside) I sure didn’t realize …

Finalist #2 Drizella of Sardis: No one saying, “take care”

King A: (aside) Now see her???!!!?? …

Finalist #2 Drizella of Sardis: Free to always have my say!

King A: (to Drizella) Well that’s definitely out!

Finalist #2 Drizella of Sardis: Free to do it all my way!

King A: (to Haman) I think it’s time that you and I arranged a heart to heart Kings don’t need advice On dames or matters of the heart!

Haman: If this is where the monarchy is headed Count me out Out of service, out of match-making I will not help you out

Mordi: (seeing and seizing his opportunity - aside) This is my chance to have sweet Esther sing! (to the King) Oh, just let me show you your queen!

Instrumental :13 seconds (1:45 – 1:58) Esther and King A dance (fast cross step/side by side/looking at each other)

23

Esther: Everyone knows I’m sheyn Every time the most bright Everywhere you look I’m such a stunning sight

Haman: (seeing his plan to hitch the King to someone Haman controls slipping from his grasp) Oh no!

Esther, Mordi and the Chorus ALL as Jews: Let every beauty give up on this thing Let’s see the King crown Esther with his ring He’ll have to when he hears sheyn Esther sing

Esther: Oh, I just can’t wait to be queen Oh, I just can’t wait to be queen

Esther, Mordi and the Chorus ALL as Jews: Oh, I (you) just can’t wait . . . to be queen

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: King A hands Esther the crown, close up as she crowns herself with a knowing “nailed- it” smile. FADE.

8. A Whole New World (A Whole New World)

Note: The recording for A Whole New World is the Walt Disney Pictures presents Aladdin Special Edition Soundtrack with Lea Salonga and Brad Kane – animated movie. Music starts immediately at the FADE from the last number.

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: The Scene fades to a star filled sky background with King A and Esther singing in their own magical Disney magic carpet star filled sky.

King A: I can show you Persia Shining, shimmering, splendid Tell me Esther, when did you set your heart to be my bride? I am lost in your eyes Smitten wonder by wonder Over, sideways and under, my passion I cannot hide A whole new world A new fantastic queen are you Haman can’t tell us, “no,” I’ll make it so I felt that she was scheming 24

Esther (now actually Queen Esther): A whole new world A dazzling place I never knew But when I hold you near, it’s crystal clear That now I’m the Queen of Per-sia with you King A: Now you’re the Queen of Persia its true

Esther: (the next 4 lines are as an aside – unheard by the King – Close up only on Esther) Unbelievable might (touching her crown) Indescribable feeling (closes her fist and touches her heart – kind of like at the High Holidays) Helping, healing and leading For tzedek and Adonai (looking up) (camera zooms out to show and she turns and they look at each other as they sing) A whole new world

King A: I will stand by your side All the wrongs to right that I see King A: If we work, it gets better I’m like a shooting star, I’ve come so far I can’t go back, to who I used to be (looking longingly to Mordi and her Jewish community)

King A: A whole new world Esther: You’re in for a surprise With social justice to pursue Esther: If we stand up together

Esther and King A: For Justice everywhere No time to spare Let me build this whole new world with you

King A: A whole new world Esther: A whole new world

King A: Yes, now I see Esther: Yes, Now you see

King A: A thrilling chance Esther: Let’s take a stance

Esther and King A:

25 For victory!

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: Esther raises her fist, King A looks at her and raises his in solidarity. FADE.

9. Be Prepared (Be Prepared)

Note: The recording for Be Prepared is the Walt Disney Pictures presents The Lion King Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with Jeremy Irons, Whoopie Goldberg, etc. – animated movie

Note: Background during the narration is the ominous instrumental music from the beginning :12 including a small segment of the choir (or if it is the only safe option the principals singing the choir part) coming in with the “OOOhhs” and looping the “OOOhhs.” Throughout the song, the small choir sings the background “Uums,” “Boom, Boom, Booms,” “Aaahhhs” and of course dramatic “Be Prepared”

Narration and companion “storybook” PDF: Well this is the scene in every fairy tale when the villain vows their revenge and Haman’s anger and hate is boiling over. Not only did her scheme to marry the King off to someone under Haman’s control fail, and not only did her arch nemesis Mordechai gain the King’s good graces by introducing the pageant winner, but that winner! Who is she? She is beautiful and smart. She sings like an angel and brings out the King’s better angels. She seems to have instantly wrapped the King around her finger and instead of seeking jewels, gold and other material rewards (that will not get in Haman’s way), the new queen is seeking JUSTICE!

Haman reveals her genocidal and regicidal plot and Mordi, who as you know, has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, overhears everything.

Yes, Haman’s rage is overflowing and Mordi, the Jews and the King had better be prepared. (1:13)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “Haman lays out her evil plan and everyone better be prepared” with a picture of the Palace with HUGE red “H” pendants down either side and underneath the banner saying – “Be Prepared.

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: Haman speaks to her followers alternating between conspiratorial asides to Bigthan, Teresh and perhaps other Persian soloists AND perhaps if we can find a safe way to film it at least one balcony scene with 8-10 of the Persians (in red vests and red COVID masks spaced 10 ft apart and marching). At the end the full choir joins ALL as Persians (Hollywood Squares).

Haman: (spoken – very calm and very evil – while Bigthan and Teresh + small choir sing the “oohs”) I never thought gallows were essential They’re crude and unspeakably plain But today they’ve a glimmer of potential If allied to my edict and brain I know the King’s powers of perception (sings) 26 Are as easy as a Jew’s to misguide But goons that you are: pay attention It’s time to stand for Persian pride

It’s clear from the Queen’s kind expressions Her lights are all on upstairs But, I’m talking kings and successions Even she can be caught unawares So prepare for the chance of a lifetime (to Bigthan and Teresh) Be prepared for sensational news A shining new era I’m ushering nearer

Bigthan and Teresh: When is this upheaval?

Haman: (seeing King A walking by in a hurry) Just watch me be evil (to Bigthan and Teresh – with a dramatic “keep quiet” finger to her lips ) It’s simply routine, sir (handing the edict to King A) To keep Shushan clean, sir (King A signs it and gives it back to Haman and keeps walking/exits) Now, at last I am given my due (kissing and holding up the edict in victory) And injustice, I now have declared Be Prepared! (Bigthan, Teresh and Persians or unseen chorus sing in harmony)

Bigthan: (spoken) Yeah, be prepared.

Teresh: (spoken) Oh, we’ll be prepared.

Bigthan: (spoken) For What?

Haman: (spoken) For the death of the King!

Bigthan: (spoken) Why, is he sick?

Haman: (spoken) No, fool, we’re going to kill him And the Jews too (sly smile)

Teresh: (spoken) Great idea, who needs a King?

27 Bigthan and Teresh: No King No King La la La la La la

Haman: (spoken) Idiots! There will be a king

Bigthan: (spoken) Hey, but you said, ah…

Haman: (emphatic) I will be king! Stick with me And you’ll never see a Jew again!

Teresh: (Thrilled, shouts throwing his fist in the air) A woman for king!

Bigthan: (spoken) Long live the king! Teresh: Ha, ha, ha, ha A woman for king! Teresh: Ha, ha, ha, ha

Bigthan and Teresh + small chorus: It’s great that we’ll soon be connected With a king who the Jews all abhorred

Haman: Of course, quid pro quo, you’re expected To take certain duties on board The future is littered with hatred And yes, due to my guarantee The point that must be re-stated is You won’t be Jew-free without me! (threatening)

So prepare for the coup of the century Be prepared for my anti-yid scam Meticulous planning Supremacy spanning Decades of denial Is simply why I’ll Be king undisputed Bowed-down to saluted And seen for the wonder I am

28 Yes, my hate and ambitions are bared Be prepared!

Haman, Bigthan and Teresh + small chorus in the scene + full chorus ALL as Persians: Yes, our hate and ambitions are bared Be prepared! (all point straight at the camera)

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: Haman, Bigthan, Teresh and perhaps , if safe, Persian soloists freeze pointing at the camera. FADE.

10. I’ll Make a Mensch Out of You (I’ll Make a Man Out of You)

Note: The recording for I’ll Make a Man Out of You is Disney’s Mulan Soundtrack with Donny Osmond – animated movie

The opening drumming intro (first :10) repeats while the narration is read and moves to the chord intro (at about :11) right after the Narrator says, “to risk everything to save her people.”

Narration and companion “storybook” PDF: Mordechai knows that this evil must be stopped. And while he does not have magic to turn mice into carriage horses, true loves’ kiss to undo the deadly prick of a spinning wheel or of a poison apple or even a magic fishhook, he does have a Kehilla Kedosha (a blessed community). He also has mishpocha (kin). And not just any kin - but kin in a position to help! After all, his niece Esther is the Queen! He must gather the Jewish community and with them bolster Esther’s courage to risk the penalty of death (if the King will not raise his staff for her to speak), to risk exposing herself as a Jew when Haman is building his gallows to hang the Jews – basically – to risk everything to save her people. (:53)

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “Mordechai and the Jewish Community tell Esther, “We’ll Make a Mensch Out of You” with a picture of Esther in a Heroic pose with her hands on her hips.

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: Mordi and each Jew Soloist address Esther to bolster her confidence. Esther listens carefully and reacts to each - gaining certainty that she must act and ultimately joining the song to declare her intention to destroy Haman. In this number the full chorus ALL as Jews sing the chorus (Hollywood Squares Screen).

Mordi: Let’s get down to business, to defeat Haman Did you think that Mordi, would lack a game plan? She’s the biggest gonif I ever met (gesturing to the “Bow Down”/huge portrait of Haman poster) But you can bet before we’re through (to Esther) Esther, I’ll make a mensch out of you.

29 Chaggai the Activist (Jew Solo 1) [ Corey Silver ]: Haymish as a meydl, but on fire within (gesturing to Esther) (translation: haymish = kind/ meydl = girl) When you stand for Tzedek, you are sure to win (translation: tzedik= justice) They’re a ferdrayt, frail, fertummelt lot (translation: ferdrayt = confused/ fertummlet = befuddled) And they’re going to kill the Jews Esther, we’ll make a mensch out of you

Daryawesh the Wise Man (Jew Solo 2) [ Don Spiegel ]: Let’s take a pause to catch our breath Will the King’s staff rise before thee? Boy we need a gimmick to appeal to him

Esther: Haman’s evil plot will be our death! Hope she doesn’t see right through me Hey! Let’s use the “come to dinner” trick on them

Jews and Mordi: You’re a mensch Small Chorus: We can serve the wor-ld’s most geshmak brisket (translation: geshmak = delicious) You’re a mensch Small Chorus: With a huge side of your great knish You’re a mensch Small Chorus: We will need to bake extra challah Delicious with your fam-ous gefilte fish!

Shaina the Activist (Jew Solo 3) [ Shaina Boal ]: Time is racing toward us till Haman arrives Give our cooks the order and we might survive You are prepared for the Vizier’s war So stand up, to fight, they’re through Oh yes, we’ve made a mensch out of you!

Esther:

30 I must stand against Haman’s evil

Jews and Mordi: You’re a mensch

Esther: I will show that I’m no layman

Jews and Mordi: You’re a mensch

Esther: With the strength of a future Maccabee (FYI: Hannukah/the Maccabee Rebellion is about 320 years after Purim) I’m serious – I will decimate Haman! (raises her fist in resistance and solidarity)

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTE: Freeze. Close up on Esther fist raised. FADE.

Video Art Card: Illustrated Chapter opening spread with Illuminated first letter and calligraphy Title Lettering in the Enchanted Storybook: “King A is served a royal portion of truth” with a picture of a Silver tray with a note saying, “Haman did it!” in front of the palace.

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTES: Montage of each of the Cooks/Bakers putting finishing touches on food and Mordechai giving the King and Haman glasses of wine. Esther rings her glass, raises it for a toast and takes command of the situation.

Esther: I’m so glad you could join us tonight (to the King and Haman) It’s quite the boisterous scene This kingdom is a torn nation And I must speak as its queen This one is scheming, plans to kill every Jew (gesturing to Haman) But her gallows, it will murder me too Don’t let her win, stop the decree The Jewish girl you married, yes, that’s me Reveal, now feel, I let you know Well, now you know (King A. looks like he might be upset) Let it go, let it go Can’t allow hate anymore Let it go, let it go Take my hand, open the door We must care, and we must show the way Let Haman rage on But you and I can end her terror today

Mordi: It’s funny, but for her, Hebrews were only the start Haman planned to kill you and to take your crown, not so smart She planned to off me and off you But now its out and Haman’s through For right, for love, for you and me We’re free

Haman: (pleading for her life - but not actually repentant) Let it go, let it go It was worth giving it a try Let it go, let it go You’ll never see me cry

36 Esther: (jumping in) Here I stand and now I say Let Haman rage on

Instrumental STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTES: Esther and Haman move to either side of King A.

Haman: My power was to grind you all into the ground

Esther: Our souls would not abide it, and forced justice to abound

Haman: I’m undone, from the King I feel an icy blast

Esther: Because heart you did lack, we’re rid of you at last Let it go, Let it go Hope will rise like the break of dawn Let it go, Let it go Now that Haman is gone Here we stand in the light of day Let Haman rage on We stand united now and every day

STAGE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION NOTES: Esther smiles. FADE.
