Composite: Amiel Melburn Trust In May 1988, a group of around 20 writers and academics spent a weekend at Wortley Hall, a country house north of Sheffield, loudly debating British politics and the state of the world. All drawn from the political left, by that point they were long used to defeat, chiefly at the hands of Margaret Thatcher. Now, they were set on figuring out not just how to reverse the political tide, but something much more ambitious: in essence, how to leave the 20th century. Over the previous decade, some of these people had shone light on why Britain had moved so far to the right, and why the left had become so weak. But as one of them later put it, they now wanted to focus on “how society was changing, what globalisation was about – where things were moving in a much, much deeper sense”. The conversations were not always easy; there were raised voices, and sometimes awkward silences. Everything was taped, and voluminous notes were taken. A couple of months on, one of the organisers wrote that proceedings had been “part coherent, part incoherent, exciting and frustrating in just about equal measure”. What emerged from the debates and discussions was an array of amazingly prescient insights, published in a visionary magazine called Marxism Today. -

"[Bly contrast to earlier Marxisms," declares Fredric Jameson in his contribution to In Defense of History, "[tlhe Marxisms .. that emerge from the present system of late capitalism .. [will] appear to be more cultural in character." (181) What might this mean? Is it a helpful assessment? To comprehend the significance of an evolving "cultural Marxism" requires examination of two intertwined issues: The history and current character of Marxism's intellectual engagement with cultural theory, and the changing status of "cultural" practice within the capitalist political economy. The two books under review allow us to take up the first of these critical questions. Demis Dworkin provides a careful and relatively comprehensive assessment of cultural Marxism's emergence as a postwar British intellectual and political project, which developed around both history-writing and what came to be called cultural studies. It isn’t always so widely I acknowledged that, without The Uses of Literacy, there would have been no Cultural Studies. In an early text, I called it one of Cultural Studies’ three ‘found- ing texts’ (Hall, 1980), and this is an opportunity to expand further on that judgement. The article therefore offers some reflections on the ‘moment’ of The Uses of Literacy – what early Cultural Studies learned from and owed, method- ologically, to the book; its connections with wider debates at the time and its formative role in what came to be known as ‘the cultural turn’. The latter phrase is the kind of clumsy abstraction Richard Hoggart would not be caught dead using, and there is no point elaborating on it conceptually here. It simply regis- ters an inescapable fact about what I called the growing ‘centrality of culture’ – the astonishing global expansion and sophistication of the cultural industries; culture’s growing significance for all aspects of social and economic life; its re- ordering effects on a variety of critical and intellectual discourses and disci- plines; its emergence as a primary and constitutive category of analysis and ‘the way in which culture creeps into every nook and crevice of contemporary social life, creating a proliferation of secondary environments, mediating everything’ (Hall, 1997: 215). -

Videogames are now a political football, both in the US (where they’re blamed for gun crime) and in China (where they’re blamed for childhood myopia). Every new media form has grown up surrounded by those wanting to control it. Popular literacy has never been free and open. Popular novels and the press; cinema and TV; and more recently digital and social media, have all attracted the wrath of incumbent commercial, government or social interests. But in the era of open access, open science, open knowledge, what about open literacy? Can it be extended to whole populations, across demographic borders, at global scale, for purposeless but nevertheless pedagogic play, and for social innovation? Or will it, like predecessor forms, be dismissed as a delinquent waste of time or commodified instrument for profit, power and mass persuasion? International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 2 No. 7; April 2012 Raymond Williams and the Structure of Feeling of Reality TV Beverley Best Assistant Professor Department of Sociology and Anthropology Concordia University Montreal, QC, Canada. Introduction There is some general truth to the narrative that cultural studies moved away from its fraught, yet productive, entanglement with Marxist critique in the 1980s, never again to seriously rekindle that engagement. The trajectory of the work of Raymond Williams, however, moves in the opposite direction to much of that field of inquiry of which Williams is often identified as a founder. I will argue, for instance, that on the question of method, the work of Raymond Williams is increasingly influenced by debates in Marxist cultural theory. More so, the question of method itself, and in particular the problematic of mediation, both become central concerns for Williams— fundamental theoretical occupations which he shared with the Western Marxists, such as Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Walter Benjamin. The increasing centrality of the problematic of mediation, in its various guises—the dynamics of materialist critique, the relation between structure and agency, the question of determination, and even the movement of the dialectic—in Williams‟ later work, reflects a deepening engagement with traditional Marxist categories while never claiming a simple identity with Marxist critique. The deepening engagement with traditional Marxist categories signals both a continuity and a rupture within the trajectory of Williams‟ analytical method over his career: for instance, the approach which Williams first calls “cultural materialism” evolves into an approach which in his later work he comes to refer to as the “sociology of culture.” My goal in this chapter is to sketch the movement of the critical method which Williams calls the sociology of culture and why the question of mediation is a central dimension of it. -
