Foreword How shall the history of Britain be written? Obviously, there are many answers to this question. This book proposes two, in the shape of the ideas of liberalism and modernity. These answers are powerful ones, for both concepts are indeed central to an understanding of Britain. As the editors argue in their introduction, these concepts are central because they pose the most searching questions, both about how historians have understood the course of British history in the past and how they have come to view it now, over the past three or four decades. Looking back over the past couple of generations of British experience and how historians have responded, the changes have been considerable. In the 1960s and into the 1970s Britain was seen as the exemplary case of modernity. It was in Britain, so it was held, that the conditions of a liberal economy and polity were historically most developed, and alongside them industrialization and urbanism. Since then much has happened to alter this view. Economic globaliza- tion, European integration, and the information revolution have been among the forces for change. These changes have in turn led to changes in the nature of the nation-state, apparent in a lessening of its power and a questioning of what it now means to be a member of a nation-state. In turn, therefore, comes the question, what does it mean to write “British history” now? The chapters that follow offer a fascinating, original, and important answer to this question. In their various ways the contributors connect to the different intellectual perspectives that have resulted from the great social, economic, and political changes that have occurred. The intellectual agenda that follows embraces postcolonial and post-Foucault governmentality perspectives, for instance, and a new awakening of inter- est in the nature of materiality in relation to power. Along with this, the introduction offers a rigorous analysis of the central terms of the book, xi xii / Patrick Joyce liberal and modernity, both of which, but especially the latter, are notori- ously fl uid and varied.

Historians devote much attention to the causes and consequences of war. By comparison, periods of ‘peace’ have received scant scholarly attention. It may be that as a non-event, peace is less tangible and therefore less easy to come to terms with. This international history course weaves together international relations, transnational and non-state actors, and ideas about peace over roughly 150 years of European history. It is not primarily a history of pacifism; our working definition of peace is broad and includes the mechanisms which sustained conditions of relative stability in Europe (the Concert of Europe and the EEC), attempts to resurrect peaceful international relations following wars (the Congress of Vienna, the Paris Peace conference of 1919, and the construction of the UN system after World War Two), conceptions of peace (individual, legal, economic, spiritual, geopolitical etc), periods/eras of ‘peace’, as well as the relationship between war and peace.

    NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard From “Men in Tights” to “Men in Krewes” Perhaps the most famous “man in tights” was Jules Léotard, a French acrobat who became the rage of London. Born in France in 1842, he was master of the flying trapeze act. Trained by his father, a Toulouse gymnastics instructor and swimming pool owner, he learned by practicing over the water. After passing his law exams, Léotard gave up a legal career for one on the trapeze. His first appearance in London was at the Alhambra in May of 1861. Two months later, at the Ashburnham Pavilion, Cremorne Gardens, Chelsea, the ace aerialist did his act on five trapezes - turning somersaults between each one. He returned again to London in 1866 and 1868, performing primarily in music halls and pleasure gardens, where he gained great popularity. Jules Léotard, more confident than daring, in his tights Jules Léotard’s success and notoriety brought about two things: “Leotards” became a new word for tights, and a man named George Leybourne wrote a popular British music hall song in 1867, The Flying Trapeze. We know the song as The (Daring Young) Man On The Flying Trapeze, a song that played a significant part in the 1934 Academy Award winning movie “It Happened One Night”, starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze (illustrated sheet music cover page) Leybourne (March 17, 1842 - September 15, 1884), whose real name was Joe Saunders, originated for London music halls the role of “Champagne Charlie”, a high-rolling “swell” who was seen only in the most fashionable places.

Fitzhugh Brundage Reader: Lisa Lindsay © 2006 Tomoko Yagyu ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Tomoko Yagyu: Slave Traders and Planters in the Expanding South: Entrepreneurial Strategies, Business Networks, and Western Migration in the Atlantic World, 1787-1859 (Under the direction of Peter A. Coclanis) This study attempts to analyze the economic effects of the domestic slave trade and the slave traders on the American South in a broader Atlantic context. In so doing, it interprets the trade as a sophisticated business and traders as speculative, entrepreneurial businessmen. The majority of southern planters were involved in the slave trade and relied on it to balance their financial security. They evaluated their slaves in cash terms, and made strategic decisions regarding buying and selling their property to enhance the overall productivity of their plantations in the long run. Slave traders acquired business skills in the same manner as did merchants in other trades, utilizing new forms of financial options in order to maximize their profit and taking advantage of the market revolution in transportation and communication methods in the same ways that contemporary northern entrepreneurs did. They were capable of making rational moves according to the signals of global commodity markets and financial movements.
