Chapter 12 The impact of development of religious tourism on the host community - A case study of Mount E’mei in China Xinlei Hu and Rong Huang University of Plymouth, Plymouth, UK 12.1 Introduction Going on a pilgrimage is included in the concept of tourism, and a new form of tourism, religious tourism, has been created (Sharpley and Sundaram, 2005). A review of English language literature sources reveals fewer studies related to the Buddhist religion compared to the other main religions. However a review of literature sources in Chinese (Gao and She, 2010) makes it clear that Chinese scholars pay more attention to the development and resources of religious tourism, in particular Buddhism. Sharpley (2014) notes that religious tourism can have a deep impact on a locality. This chapter discusses relationships between religions and tourism, stakeholders’ perceptions and factors that influence their views. A case study of the different impacts of development of Buddhism related tourism in Mount E’mei on the host community is included, which was based on a series of interviews with relevant tourism industry stakeholders. -

International Journal of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences volume 4 issue 5 pp. 213-220 doi: https://dx.doi.org/10.20469/ijhss.4.10003-5 Technology and Marketing Tourism and Hotels in Jordan Mohammad Nayef Alsarayreh∗ Al-Balqa’ Applied University, Salt, Jordan Abstract: This study seeks to identify the availability of technological means in the touristic and hotel facilities and its role in the competitive advantage in the marketing of tourism and hotel products in Jordan from the perspective of workers in enterprises, and to investigate kinds of obstacles and difficulties facing this type of tourism, and what implications affecting the development of this type of tourism. This study belongs to the exploratory analytical studies and pursues collecting and analyzing data to gain access to the results. The study was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to a number of workers in the touristic and hotel facilities where (80) questionnaires were distributed, of them (73) questionnaires were restored, and (8) were excluded, so (65) questionnaires were adopted. These question- naires contain data of many workers in the touristic and hotel facilities who represent the research study population and sample. The availability of technological means helps to provide information on the services provided in the tourism and hotel facilities, which helps in the prices of competitive advantage. The availability of technological means helps in the easiness of access to the information relevant to the touristic and product, which helps in the competitive advantage. Future studies should work to figure out the best ways and most advanced used in tourism and hotel shopping to increase the competitive advantage between those in charge of this sector. -

As the numbers of visitors to religious heritage sites have increased, so has the integration of religious heritage into tourism supply offerings. There is a growing research agenda focusing on the growth and management of this tourism niche market. However, little research has focused on the role that religious institutions and leadership play in the development of religious heritage tourism. The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of religious leaders and the impacts their decisions have on the development of religious heritage tourism through a consideration of three case studies related to recent decisions made by the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alternative TourismJournal Staged Authenticity The Israeli ‘Annexation’ of Palestinian Religious Tourism in the 1967 Occupied Territory 1 Alternative Tourism Journal is an initiative of the Alternative Tourism Group-Study Center Palestine (ATG). It is a journal which offers an alternative narrative of the situation in Palestine and the way it impacts on tourism. ATG is a Palestinian NGO specializing in tours and pilgrimages that include a critical examination of the history, culture, and politics of the Holy Land. ATG operates on the tenets of “justice tourism” and seeks empowerment of the local community through affirmation of Palestinian cultural identity, and protection of eco-rights. Above all, ATG seeks to promote justice in the Holy Land with tourism as one of its instruments. Of these, over 1 million defined themselves as pilgrims. This represents a twofold increase on 2007 and 17% increase on 2000, the year Pope John Paul II visited Israel. 40% of the pilgrims who visited Israel in 2008 came from Europe, 30% from America and the remainder from other countries. Comparing the year 2008 with 2000, there was a 43% increase in the number of pilgrims visiting Israel, with the main increase coming from Europe (54% increase coming mainly from Eastern Europe- Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Hungary). However, the figures for pilgrim travel from Western Europe (Italy, UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland) fell 42% more pilgrims came from America in 2008, compared to 2000, however, there was a decrease in pilgrims from Argentina, Mexico etc. The Christian market sector In 2008, 1.8 million Christian tourists visited Israel (17% more than in 2000). The largest increases came from Eastern European countries, with decreases registered from Western European countries. While there was an increase in Christian tourism from The USA (40%), decreases were registered from Argentina (-64%) and Mexico (-37%). -
