The impact of social media on political, social and economic processes in Kazakhstan has not been explored yet. This thesis presents empirical findings of a research examining the use of social networking sites amongst Kazakhstanis during the uprising in the rich-oil town of Zhanaozen on 16 December 2011. It is guided by the main research question that looks at ”What impact does online political participation have on political processes in Kazakhstan?” This research provides a preliminary and exploratory analysis of how two blogging platforms: Yvision and LiveJournal serve as a foundation for the political and socially involved Kazakhstanis, and how in turn, this could have an effect on the political process in the post-soviet authoritarian state of Kazakhstan. This research applied a two-stage content analysis of messages posted on the blogging platforms (Yvision and LiveJournal) and in the two national newspapers Kazakhstanskaya Pravda and Golos Respubliki and in its online version – Respublika portal. In both instances, the period of six months was covered: from 16 December of 2011 when the uprising took place until May of 2012 when the first trials of the protesters began. Such a specific timeframe was chosen as this research focuses on the representation of the uprising both in the traditional forms of media as well as online and the consequences it had on political participation in Kazakhstan. Data is collected via non-participatory technique with a non-random sample selection process that allows focusing on the events of 2011 in Zhanaozen. Research findings demonstrated in the light of the uprising, online political activism does have an impact on political participation in Kazakhstan. Although Kazakhstanis iii are generally quite apolitical, such a tragic event served as a catalyst in raising political awareness and online media provided a platform for exploring this. However, not only did the authoritarian government prevented Kazakhstanis from being more politically involved by applying “just-in-time” censorship techniques, the existing digital gap prevented the majority of Kazakhstani to go online and participate in the online debate. Findings have also indicated that the crisis in Zhanaozen highlighted the long-standing problems with ethnic return migration as well as national and ethnic identity amongst Kazakhs. This thesis contributes to existing research on how political activism online can provide support for political activism online and impact the governing bodies.     SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV CHOKAN OF WORKS SELECTED SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV Pioneering Ethnographer and Historian of the Great Steppe When Chokan Valikhanov died of tuberculosis in 1865, aged only 29, the Russian academician Nikolai Veselovsky described his short life as ‘a meteor flashing across the field of oriental studies’. Set against his remarkable output of official reports, articles and research into the history, culture and ethnology of Central Asia, and more important, his Kazakh people, it remains an entirely appropriate accolade. Born in 1835 into a wealthy and powerful Kazakh clan, he was one of the first ‘people of the steppe’ to receive a Russian education and military training. Soon after graduating from Siberian Cadet Corps at Omsk, he was taking part in reconnaissance missions deep into regions of Central Asia that had seldom been visited by outsiders. His famous mission to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, which began in June 1858 and lasted for more than a year, saw him in disguise as a Tashkent mer- chant, risking his life to gather vital information not just on current events, but also on the ethnic make-up, geography, flora and fauna of this unknown region. Journeys to Kuldzha, to Issyk-Kol and to other remote and unmapped places quickly established his reputation, even though he al- ways remained inorodets – an outsider to the Russian establishment. Nonetheless, he was elected to membership of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and spent time in St Petersburg, where he was given a private audience by the Tsar. Wherever he went he made his mark, striking up strong and lasting friendships with the likes of the great Russian explorer and geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tian-Shansky and the writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

    THE NOTION OF “KAZAKHNESS” BEHIND THE SYMBOLIC NATION-BUILDING OF KAZAKHSTAN Narek Mkrtchyan Yerevan State University Abstract The paper deals with the processes of overcoming Russian ‘colonial’ impediments to the creation of symbolic spaces for the emergence of a new national self- consciousness in Kazakhstan. The paper highlights the importance of Nazarbaev’s decision to transfer to and construct a new capital Astana in fostering the ideas of national identity and ethnic belonging. Therefore, an attempt has been made to observe the phenomena of urbanization and reformulation of state symbols in explaining both ethnic and civic mechanisms of influences on people’s consciousness. Additionally, the works of various Kazakh intellectuals and cultural figures have been taken into consideration to examine the notion of Kazakhness and its’ contribution to the development of the Kazakh national identity. Content analysis of architectural design of Astana and state symbols is essential to understand the vision of Kazakhstan’s imagined future.     History of Kazakhstan The territory now known as Kazakhstan was home to nomadic peoples for centuries. Mongol tribes began migrating to the area in the eighth century AD, and in the early thirteenth century, central Asia was conquered by Genghis Khan’s Golden Horde. Their descendants, known as the White Horde, ruled the territory until the Mongol Empire crumbled in the late 14th century. The Kazakh nation that emerged was a mixture of Turkic and Mongol peoples. From 1511 to 1518, Kazakhs were unified and their territory expanded under the leadership of Kassym Khan. Their language and culture gradually became distinct from those of neighboring Uzbek and Kyrgyz peoples. Following Kassym Khan’s reign, the Kazakhs divided into three distinct groups, each dominating a particular geographic area but maintaining a common language and heritage. Fiercely independent, they avoided relations with outside nations. Contact with imperial Russia was minimal until the early1700s, when Russia built forts in southern Siberia and northern Kazakhstan. When the Kazakhs were threatened by the Kalmyks, they reluctantly accepted protection from czarist Russia. In the 19th- century Great Game race for territory and influence between Britain and Russia, Russia eventually solidified its control of the area. Subsequent Kazakh uprisings, including one in 1916, were put down with force. In the wake of Russia’s Bolshevik Revolution, a Kazakh autonomous government was formed and nominally held power from 1917 to1919. By 1920, however, communist forces had gained control; Kazakhstan officially became a Soviet republic in 1936. Years of war, followed by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s forced collectivization campaign in the 1930s, virtually eliminated the traditional nomadic way of life; one-third of the population and most livestock perished.

We have studied the works of leading French researches from 1991 to the present. e study has revealed, that region of Central Asia has lost its homogeneity: each state in the region is developing in its own way, according to its own model and has only its own international guidelines.
