Conocido también como Indy, Indiana trabaja como arqueólogo y profesor en la Universidad Barnett, ubicada en New York. Cuando no está impartiendo clases, emprende viajes con la finalidad de buscar objetos de importante valor histórico para la humanidad. Generalmente, en cada una de sus aventuras se enfrenta con rivales que compiten por conseguir el mismo objeto para posteriormente utilizarlo con fines siniestros. Algunos de estos objetos son el Arca de la Alianza, el Santo Grial y la Calavera de Cristal.4 Su vestimenta se compone principalmente de un fedora de copa alta y una chaqueta de piel. Otros de sus rasgos característicos son el látigo, que utiliza a manera de arma y herramienta en sus aventuras, y su fobia hacia las serpientes, ocasionada por una experiencia traumatizante durante su juventud.5 Fue interpretado en todas las películas, desde su primera aparición en 1981, por el actor Harrison Ford —en algunas escenas de la tercera fue River Phoenix—, quien ha convertido el personaje en un hito del cine. También apareció en la serie de televisión de los años 1990 Las aventuras del joven Indiana Jones, en la que se relataban su infancia y primeras aventuras, interpretado por los actores Corey Carrier, Sean Patrick Flanery y George Hall. Además, es el personaje central de novelas, historietas y videojuegos. En 1973, George Lucas comenzó el desarrollo conceptual de dos series de películas que, inspiradas en los seriales de los años 1930 y 1940, constituirían una versión moderna de los mismos.6 La primera recibió el título de Las aventuras de Indiana Smith, y trataba sobre un arqueólogo envuelto en numerosos peligros al buscar objetos arqueológicos. La segunda estaría centrada en aventuras espaciales y pasaría a ser nombrada Star Wars.7 Al examinar el esbozo Las aventuras de Indiana Smith, el guionista Philip Kaufman introdujo el Arca de la Alianza como elemento narrativo central de la primera aventura del arqueólogo. Sin embargo, el proyecto decayó cuando Clint Eastwood contrató a Kaufman para dirigir la película The Outlaw Josey Wales,8 por lo que Lucas prefirió continuar con el desarrollo de Star Wars, abandonando la idea del arqueólogo por un tiempo indefinido. Al encontrarse, Spielberg le expresó su interés en dirigir una película de James Bond. En cambio, Lucas le comentó que él tenía una mejor idea y le habló acerca del arqueólogo Smith. Spielberg quedó fascinado con el concepto, catalogándolo como «una película de James Bond, excepto por sus dispositivos de espionaje».9 Poco después, le comentó a Lucas su intención de cambiar el nombre. Éste le sugirió entonces sustituir el apellido «Smith» por «Jones», dejando «Indiana», que era el apodo. A raíz de esta sugerencia, el personaje pasó a llamarse «Indiana Jones».6 Tras aplicar unas revisiones al argumento, ambos llegaron a un acuerdo con Paramount Pictures para la realización de cinco películas sobre las aventuras del arqueólogo.9 A finales de ese año, los dos comenzaron la producción de la primera película de la serie, titulada Raiders of the Lost Ark (Los cazadores del arca perdida en Latinoamérica, En busca del arca perdida en España). Las principales adiciones que fueron efectuándose se centraron en aspectos como: Jones es un arqueólogo aficionado a la búsqueda de objetos míticos. • Su nombre: fue dado a conocer en la tercera película, donde Lucas incorporó por primera vez al padre de Indiana, Henry Jones Sr. Debido a ello, Indiana Jones pasó a ser el apodo de Henry Walton Jones Junior. Es en este mismo film donde se da a conocer que el apodo "Indiana" proviene del nombre del perro que tuvo Henry Jones Jr. como mascota en su niñez. Lo cierto, es que el apodo si proviene del nombre de una mascota, el Alaskan Malamute de George Lucas, productor de la saga. • Sus rasgos físicos y personalidad, ambos aspectos basados en personajes del cine de aventuras, interpretados por actores como Errol Flynn y Charlton Heston. También es notoria la influencia directa de Fred C. Dobbs en los bocetos originales de la vestimenta. En cuanto a ésta, fue diseñada por el dibujante de historietas Jim Steranko. • Su intérprete: después de realizar algunas audiciones con la finalidad de encontrar al actor que interpretaría a Indy, Lucas y Spielberg originalmente optaron por Tom Selleck. Selleck tuvo que rechazar la propuesta debido a su participación en Magnum P.I.. Desesperado por el cercano inicio de rodaje de la película, Spielberg consideró finalmente a Harrison Ford, actor previamente elegido por Lucas para interpretar el personaje de Han Solo en Star Wars. Raiders of the Lost Ark se estrenó a mediados de 1981 y fue nominada a 8 premios Óscar, entre ellos el de «mejor película». Más tarde se estrenarían otros filmes de la serie en 1984, 1989 y 2008. The Last 19 $48.000.00013 En 1938, Indiana Jones es contratado por el empresario Crusade 89 estadounidense Walter Donovan para encontrar el Santo Grial. Para su nueva misión, Indiana recibe la ayuda de la doctora Elsa Schneider, poco antes de enterarse de que su padre desapareció sin dejar rastro alguno. Para su sorpresa, Donovan y Elsa están relacionados con los nazis, y han sido ellos quienes han secuestrado al padre de Jones para obtener información acerca de la localización del Grial. Indiana recupera el diario privado de su padre, que contiene valiosa información sobre el cáliz sagrado, y consigue rescatar a éste antes de conocer la ubicación de dicho objeto.
