The Exhibition FEBRUARY 2015 Der Meister Tön' Und Weisen... Heinz Zednik – 50 Jahre Staatsoper Der Meister Tön’ und Weisen... Heinz Zednik – 50 Jahre Staatsoper 12.2.–21.9.2015 Lobkowitzplatz 2, 1010 Wien [email protected] T +43 1 525 24 5315 FEBRUARY 2015 The Exhibition In 2015 the music world honours the occasion of two anniversaries of the well-known and popular Austrian tenor Heinz Zednik: he celebrates both his seventy-fifth birthday and five decades as member of the ensemble of the “Haus am Ring”, the Vienna State Opera. On November 5, 1964 the young singer from the Graz Opera gave his first guest performance in Vienna, singing the role of Augustin Moser in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; on September 3, 1965 he appeared for the first time as a full member of the ensemble at the Vienna State Opera – as Count Lerma in Verdi’s Don Carlo. In order to showcase Zednik’s impressive repertory the exhibition focuses both on Zednik’s opera performances in Vienna and beyond – in Milan, Bayreuth and New York – and his work outside the field of opera, which comprises operetta, oratories, lieder and Viennese songs. Markus Vorzellner curated the exhibition; Elisabeth Truxa designed the layout. Der Meister Tön’ und Weisen... • About the Exhibition Tenorissimo! Plácido Domingo in Vienna
Tenorissimo! Plácido Domingo in Vienna May 17th, 2017 - January 8th, 2018 Lobkowitzplatz 2, 1010 Wien [email protected] T +43 1 525 24 5315 About the exhibition An unmistakable dark timbre, highly dramatic expressiveness, an impressive, vast repertoire – all this enraptures the fans of the Spanish crowd-pleaser with waves of enthusiasm. The Theatermuseum celebrates Plácido Domingo on the anniversary of his stage debut: He has been singing at the Vienna State Opera for 50 years. When the Tenor, then still considered as insider tip, made his debut at the State Opera in the title role of Verdi‘s Don Carlo, not only he took stage and cast in storm, but also the hearts of the Viennese audience – a true love relationship, unbroken till today. This performance contributed to an unparalleled career, taking him to the world‘s leading opera houses. Vienna has always been a very special “home port“ for the opera star. Here he performed 30 different roles in 300 shows and was awarded the title Austrian Kammersänger. The exhibition at the Theatermuseum documents the most important appearances of the “Tenorissimo“ in Vienna with original costumes and props, photographs and memorabilia, video and audio samples. The presentation portrays him also as baritone, the role fach on which he concentrated almost exclusively in the past 10 years, and refers to his activities as conductor, taking him regularly to the orchestra pit of the Vienna State Opera since the end of the 1970s. Without hesitation Plácido Domingo can be described as one of the most versatile, curious and longest serving representative of his musical genre.

  • Uniting Commedia Dell'arte Traditions with the Spieltenor Repertoire
UNITING COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE TRADITIONS WITH THE SPIELTENOR REPERTOIRE Corey Trahan, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2012 APPROVED: Stephen Austin, Major Professor Paula Homer, Committee Member Lynn Eustis, Committee Member and Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music James Scott, Dean of the School of Music James R. Meernik, Acting Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Trahan, Corey, Uniting Commedia dell’Arte Traditions with the Spieltenor repertoire. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2012, 85 pp., 6 tables, 35 illustrations, references, 84 titles. Sixteenth century commedia dell’arte actors relied on gaudy costumes, physical humor and improvisation to entertain audiences. The spieltenor in the modern operatic repertoire has a similar comedic role. Would today’s spieltenor benefit from consulting the commedia dell’arte’s traditions? To answer this question, I examine the commedia dell’arte’s history, stock characters and performance traditions of early troupes. The spieltenor is discussed in terms of vocal pedagogy and the fach system. I reference critical studies of the commedia dell’arte, sources on improvisatory acting, articles on theatrical masks and costuming, the commedia dell’arte as depicted by visual artists, commedia dell’arte techniques of movement, stances and postures. In addition, I cite vocal pedagogy articles, operatic repertoire and sources on the fach system. My findings suggest that a valid relationship exists between the commedia dell’arte stock characters and the spieltenor roles in the operatic repertoire. I present five case studies, pairing five stock characters with five spieltenor roles.

  • Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.

At that time the late James Burnett was especially helpful in providing dates for the L’Oiseau-Lyre recordings that he produced. More information was obtained from additional paperwork in association with Richard Alston for his book published to celebrate the conductor’s 70 th birthday in 1997. John Hunt’s most valuable discography devoted to the Staatskapelle Dresden was again helpful. Further updating has been undertaken in addition to the generous assistance of Philip Stuart via his LSO discography which he compiled for the Orchestra’s centenary in 2004 and has kept updated. Inevitably there are a number of missing credits for producers and engineers in the earliest years as these facts no longer survive. Additionally some exact dates have not been tracked down. • Mozart's Die Zauberflöte
Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte – a partial discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are 128 recordings of Die Zauberflöte listed in the CLOR catalogue, of which around twenty are studio versions. I have tried any number of recordings and long despaired of ever finding one in acceptable sound which does the opera full justice. There are some good mono recordings from the 50’s, sometimes shorn of all dialogue as per Karajan’s, but most collectors understandably want a good stereo version, with the dialogue perhaps cut to manageable proportions for non-German-speakers. That which comes closest is Böhm’s 1964 recording starring Fritz Wunderlich as an ideal Tamino, but the perceived inadequacies of the female singers soon led to the observation that the ideal recording could have been produced by combining the men from Böhm’s recording with the women in Klemperer’s exactly contemporaneous studio recording. As they stand, both are arguably flawed but revisiting them has softened my own objections and few since have offered anything better. At almost every turn, some problem has compromised subsequent studio versions of the stereo and digital eras, such as the presence of throaty, constricted tenors as Tamino like Schreier, blighting all three recordings conducted by Suitner, Sawallisch and Davis, or Araiza for Karajan and Marriner. Finding a good Queen of the Night has been problematic, too; HIP influence has tended to encourage the casting of voices too small and flimsy to do justice to Mozart’s deceptively simple writing, and produced some really inadequate efforts, such as Harnoncourt’s, Norrington’s, Jacobs’ and Christie’s recordings, all of which I have excluded from the reviews below, as their mostly weak casting and small-scale or reduced forces approach render them of little merit as far as my own taste goes.
