  • Open House Report
    Lacey Community Workgroup on Homelessness Open House Report With support from City staff and facilitators from The Athena Group, Lacey’s Community Workgroup on Homelessness hosted a virtual open house, February 15-March 1, 2021. Community members were invited to review what the workgroup has learned to date and share their comments and questions. Two confidential surveys – one for the community, in general, and one for businesses – were linked to the site and made available for responses through March 8. Outreach and Participation The City of Lacey reached out broadly and with targeted efforts to promote participation in the event and the community and business surveys. General outreach efforts included January and February articles in the LaceyLife newsletter, a Conversation with the Council on Homelessness in Lacey, information on the workgroup web page, and frequent Facebook and Twitter posts in advance of and throughout the event. In addition, two articles on the city’s efforts to address homelessness generally and more specifically on the open house were published in Thurston Talk. Workgroup members were given promotional material to share through their networks, and the City conducted targeted email campaigns to the following groups: • City Council • City Boards • City Commissions • Lacey Youth Council • City of Lacey staff • Lacey South Sound Chamber • Thurston Chamber • Thurston Economic Development Commission • Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) distribution list (motels and tourism businesses) • Visitor Convention Bureau •

    Blues Music in Literature Lacey Crump The blues is an impulse to keep the painful detail and episodes of a brutal existence alive in one’s aching consciousness, to finger its jagged grain, and to transcend it, not by the consolation of philosophy but by squeezing from it a near-tragic, near-comic lyricism. As a form, the blues is an autobiographical chronicle of personal catastrophe expressed lyrically. –Ralph Ellison Rationale One of the greatest challenges with English Language Arts curriculum is that it lends itself to being uninteresting, not relatable, and far detached from students’ lives and understanding of life. Lack of diversity – both in terms of cultural, socioeconomic, and racial backgrounds, as well as in the contents and forms of the literary work itself – can make classrooms and the subject matter stale for adolescent students. One of the greatest consequences is that many students feel little to no connection to, or interest in, the curriculum. According to Bob Fecho in Writing in the Dialogical Classroom, some students have an easier time with English curriculum simply because of their cultural, socioeconomic, and racial backgrounds. He recounts one student in particular whose work was technically and mechanically superior, yet it lacked the depth or purpose of which she was capable: She’s White and middle class, and that accident of birth grants her many privileges not afforded to others. She started her education with her language and culture closely aligned with that of the school… When she opened books to read, from the very first basal reader to her senior year literature course, Ashley recognized the people, events, and contexts of her life there on the pages.

The origins and development of the series are described, as well as its position in a long line of television crime/detective stories and the character portrayals of the two women detectives. Several of the episodes are then reviewed to analyze ways in which Cagney and Lacey negotiate controversies such as ethnic disadvantage, the vulnerability of illegal immigrants, class differences, latchkey children, and various feminist issues, including abortion. I want especially to note the presence of Stephen’s mother, Claudine, his sister, Julianne, and her family, and his brother, Galen. I know that there are many among you who have come long distances for this commemoration. It is fitting that, once again, Stephen should bring our community together. In preparing for this service, I came across a reference to an autobiographical essay by Seamus Heaney, the Irish poet. Heaney remembers a chestnut tree planted in the front yard of his boyhood home. Later, after he and his family moved from that house, the tree was cut down. He found that he was drawn to the space that the tree had once filled.
