Kaler Index More information Star index Stars are arranged by the Latin genitive of their constellation of residence, with other star names interspersed alphabetically. Within a constellation, Bayer Greek letters are given first, followed by Roman letters, Flamsteed numbers, variable stars arranged in traditional order (see Section 1.11), and then other names that take on genitive form. Stellar spectra are indicated by an asterisk. The best-known proper names have priority over their Greek-letter names. Spectra of the Sun and of nebulae are included as well. What more can I say. If you have not made plans for a road trip, you can help out at HRPO. All who are going on a road trip be prepared to share pictures and experiences at the September meeting. BRAS has lost another member, Bart Bennett, who joined BRAS after Chris Desselles gave a talk on Astrophotography to the Cajun Clickers Computer Club (CCCC) in January of 2016, Bart became the President of CCCC at the same time I became president of BRAS. The Clickers are shocked at his sudden death via heart attack. Both organizations will miss Bart. His obituary is posted online here: http://www.rabenhorst.com/obituary/sidney-barton-bart-bennett/ Last month’s meeting, at LIGO, was a success, even though there was not much solar viewing for the public due to clouds and rain for most of the afternoon. BRAS had a table inside the museum building, where Ben and Craig used material from the Night Sky Network for the public outreach. -

There are too many for professional astronomers to monitor alone. So, we need your help to monitor these stars over days, weeks and years. This guide will help you find some bright variable stars, measure their brightness and Ci#zenSky is a collaboraon of then submit the measurements to assist the American Associaon of professional astronomers. Variable Star Observers (AAVSO), the University of Denver, the Adler Planetarium, the Johns Hopkins University Par1cipate in one of the oldest ci1zen science and the California Academies projects in history! Thousands of people just of Science with support from the Naonal Science like you are also helping out. Light curves are a fundamental tool for variable star astronomy. They are relavely simple and easy to grasp. They are simply a graph of brightness (Y axis) vs. 1me (X axis). Brightness increases as you go up the graph and 1me advances as you move to the right. The brightness of a star is measured in units of “magnitude”. No1ce that the magnitude scale on the graph above shows smaller numbers as the star gets brighter and larger numbers as the star gets fainter. -

The next morning (11 Aug) is a solar party at the Logan Library from 10:30am to noon. The last scheduled star party is one that is always fun. We will set up scopes in the parking lot of the Providence Macey’s to show shoppers the planets and the moon. We also still need a liaison for the Logan Library Loaner Telescope. February 23, Dr Kelley Fast, NASA HQ – Hunting NEO’s - This talk was rescheduled to this month after being cancelled due to weather last month. - Topic will be “Planetary Defense”. - This led to a comment that a recent meteor came down in Lake Erie! . Star Party Feb 25th – where? GMARS or Johnson Valley? - This will fall on the actual night of new moon. - Teresa will check that it’s okay with GMARS. - We will meet at China House and caravan to the site. It was pointed out that there had recently been a problem with the coop well in Lucerne Valley and China House didn’t have water. We will verify that this is no longer a problem before the star party. A route map will be emailed out to everyone. March 3 – Urban Assault, finally! - Weather and ground snow permitting, we will set up in the normal spot in the Village. -

Image credit: NASA/JPL- Caltech/UCLA/MPS/DLR/IDA From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Dawn is a robotic spacecraft sent by NASA on a space exploration mission to the two most massive mem- bers of the asteroid belt: Vesta and the dwarf planet Ceres. Launched on September 27, 2007, Dawn is scheduled to reach Vesta on 16 Jul 2011, which it will then explore until 2012. It is scheduled to reach Ceres in 2015. It will be the first spacecraft to visit either body. First Light Jul / Aug / 2011 1/ 32 Presidential Comments Bob Lightner AAC President As we swelter away this hot summer month, wishing for the cooler climate of fall, we should look back on the successful conclusion to yet another chapter of NASA’s manned spaceflight scrapbook. The last space shuttle has flown and the book is now closed on an incredible list of achievements. The names, At- lantis, Columbia, Challenger, Endeavour, Discovery and even the Enterprise will be part of the history books. What fantastic things these spacecraft have done! They launched satellites, captured orbiting platforms, built the Interna- tional Space Station, took over 600 astronauts and cosmonauts into low earth orbit, serviced the Hubble Space Telescope, and helped us develop a better understanding about space and our fragile earth.
