A personal copy of this guide can be obtained online at www.darkskyarkansas.com Preface This publication was inspired by and built upon Robert (Rocky) Togni’s quest to share the night sky with all who can be enticed under it. His belief is that the best place to start a relationship with the night sky is to learn the constellations and explore the principle ob- jects within them with the naked eye and a pair of common binoculars. Over a period of years, Rocky evolved a concept, using seasonal asterisms like the Summer Triangle and the Winter Hexagon, to create an easy to use set of simple charts to make learning one’s way around the night sky as simple and fun as possible. Recognizing that the most avid defenders of the natural night time environment are those who have grown to know and love nature at night and exploring the universe that it re- veals, the Arkansas Natural Sky Association (ANSA) asked Rocky if the Association could publish his guide. The hope being that making this available in printed form at vari- ous star parties and other relevant venues would help bring more people to the night sky as well as provide funds for the Association’s work. Once hooked, the owner will definitely want to seek deeper guides. But there is no better publication for opening the sky for the neophyte observer, making the guide the perfect companion for a library telescope. -

Low and to the right is the great red pulsating supergiant, Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis). Recently acquiring fame for being the first star to have its atmosphere directly imaged (shown below), alpha Orionis has captivated observers' attention for centuries. At minimum brightness, as in 1927 and 1941, its magnitude may drop below 1.2. -

I Simpósio Nacional de Educação em Astronomia – Rio de Janeiro - 2011 1 OBSERVAÇÃO VISUAL DE ETA AQUILAE: UMA ATIVIDADE MULTIDISCIPLINAR Alexandre Amorim 1,2 1American Association of Variable Stars Observers 2Núcleo de Estudo e Observação Astronômica “José Brazilício de Souza” e-mail: [email protected] Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho é propor uma atividade multidisciplinar mostrando que o estudo vem da observação, neste caso a observação visual da cefeida eta Aquilae (η Aql). Eta Aquilae é uma estrela variável, isto é, seu brilho não é constante e varia em função do tempo. Esta estrela é facilmente observada a olho nu permitindo seu acompanhamento mesmo em locais com média poluição luminosa. O trabalho consiste em quatro etapas assim descritas: a primeira etapa da atividade inicia com a aquisição de dados, isto é, fazendo estimativas visuais a olho nu e usando uma sequência de estrelas de comparação previamente estabelecida. A segunda etapa inclui a redução de dados e análise simples da curva de luz com base naquelas estimativas obtidas na etapa anterior. A terceira etapa envolve uma análise mais acurada da curva de luz e obtenção dos parâmetros principais da estrela. A quarta etapa envolve a aplicação dos parâmetros para se encontrar a distância da estrela em relação à Terra bem como na reflexão da distância calculada e suas implicações para uma discussão histórico-filosófica tanto entre os participantes desta atividade como alunos do ensino médio e fundamental. A month earlier, Sandoval County commis- sioners approved Commissioner David Heil’s amendments to a proposed ordinance and agreed to act on publishing the ordinance at their December 14 meeting. All passed on 4-1 votes. With a favorable vote on publishing legal notices, the commission would have been free to take final action on the ordinance on January 18, its one meeting scheduled for the month. Instead the wheels came off. Setting the stage was Planning Director Mike Springfield acknowledging the ordinance View of Sandias and Rio Grande from Coronado Historic Site in Bernalillo amended in November contained erroneous noise limits for well drilling and production. Mass- luminosity- rotation relation for F, A, B, O and WR class stars Edgars Alksnis [email protected] Small volume statistics show, that luminosity of bright stars is proportional to their angular momentums of rotation when certain relation between stellar mass and stellar rotation speed is reached. Cause should be outside of standard stellar model. Concept allows strengthen hypotheses of 1) fast rotation of Wolf-Rayet stars and 2) low mass central black hole of the Milky Way. Keywords: mass-luminosity relation, stellar rotation, Wolf-Rayet stars, stellar angular momentum, Sagittarius A* mass, Sagittarius A* luminosity. In previous work (Alksnis, 2017) we have shown, that in slow rotating stars stellar luminosity is proportional to spin angular momentum of the star. This allows us to see, that there in fact are no stars outside of “main sequence” within stellar classes G, K and M. METHOD We have analyzed possible connection between stellar luminosity and stellar angular momentum in samples of most known F, A, B, O and WR class stars (tables 1-5). Stellar equatorial rotation speed (vsini) was used as main parameter of stellar rotation when possible. Several diverse data for one star were averaged. Zero stellar rotation speed was considered as an error and corresponding star has been not included in sample. Light curves are a fundamental tool for variable star astronomy. They are relavely simple and easy to grasp. They are simply a graph of brightness (Y axis) vs. 1me (X axis). Brightness increases as you go up the graph and 1me advances as you move to the right. The brightness of a star is measured in units of “magnitude”. No1ce that the magnitude scale on the graph above shows smaller numbers as the star gets brighter and larger numbers as the star gets fainter.
