  • Volcano House Register Volume 2
Haw VolcanoesNa al Park National Service Park The Volcano House Register, Volume 2 1873-1885 In this volume, on almost every page, there are entries in which a writer merely gives his name, date, times of arrival and departure, and destination. In the other volumes, whenever this occurs, I mention that I omitted such an entry, and give the page number. But because there are so many such entries in this particular volume, it would become tedious both for the transcriber to record and the reader to read every case of such omission; so I am doing it once only, here at the beginning of the document. On the page facing page 1, there is a rough table of contents, listing the page numbers of various maps and signatures of Kalakaua, Louis Pasteur, etc. In addition, there is a poem: Index Some good Some mediocre And much rotten For the Lord's sake Don't write unless You have somethingHawai'i Volcanoes Park To say & can say it. National Park Ser no signature and no date Between 11 and 12 last night Mokuaweoweo started action again. The wind has been from the southward, and the whole day a dense body of smoke has been passing over Kilauea and across Puna, off to sea. Evidently a much greater portion of the crater is in action than in the eruption of August last. Had a heavy thunder shower about dusk with hail and this evening there is considerable lightning. Weather hazy and top of mountain seldom visible. Kilauea quite active but no lava flowing.

BITTERS & EXTRACTS Bitters 4 oz • Cobalt Blue Bottles • Non-Beverage Alcohol Products Xocolatl Mole Bitters 53% ABV Inspired by the classic Mole sauces of Mexico, this bitter was originally designed to pair with aged tequila, but we have found that it works beautifully with aged rum, bourbon and rye as well. We’re big fans of putting a dash in an Old Fashioned or Manhattan, and new classics like The Conference and the Latin Quarter just wouldn’t be the same without them. Hopped Grapefruit Bitters 53% ABV Designed to enhance young (silver) rums, tequilas and mezcal, the Hopped Grapefruit Bitters work well in cocktails when you need a little citrus punch. Try it in a Daiquiri, Gimlet, or even a Gin and Tonic (with a splash of maraschino). ‘Elemakule Tiki Bitters 44% ABV A taste of the islands, the ‘Elemakule Tiki Bitters were designed to work in complex tiki drinks, bringing familiar !avors to the mix without dominating the overall pro"le. Cinnamon, clove, allspice and a variety of citrus !avors are supported by cardamom and classic bitter herbs. It also works beautifully in warm drinks, toddies and mulled wine. Boston Bittahs 44% ABV Citrus, citrus, citrus and more citrus, supported with a heavy dose of chamomile. We think it smells like summer. Try these bitters in your favorite "zz, sour or bright tropical drink. It also works extremely well with pisco and scotch - and is a favorite in a Tom Collins. Burlesque Bitters 44% ABV This menage of hibiscus, açai berry and long pepper is sweet, spicy and a bit of a tart.

  • This Isn't Your Father's Whisky Soda
U.S. | NEW YORK | NY CULTURE This Isn’t Your Father’s Whisky Soda A bar in Brooklyn is serving highballs made with a Scotch-like whisky from Japan, delivered via a beer tap-like device Brooklyn’s Kinfolk 90 is the first New York City bar with a highball machine. PHOTO: ANDREW LAMBERSON FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL By Charles Passy Updated Aug. 21, 2017 12:10 a.m. ET At Kinfolk 90, a bar in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, patrons can enjoy everything from an Italian riff on the Manhattan cocktail to a super-hoppy India pale ale. But many customers are opting for a whisky and soda. Then again, this isn’t your typical version of the classic drink. The booze is a Scotch-like whisky from Japan. And it is delivered via a beer tap-like device that ensures the desired 3-to-1 ratio of fizzy water and alcohol. The cocktail, simply called a highball, is a mainstay at bars in Japan, where such machines are common. And to hear some proprietors of New York establishments tell it, the drink could be the next big thing in the city. The cocktail’s appeal is rooted in its simplicity, noted Kinfolk 90 General Manager John Van Lieshout. But the machine “adds a degree of artistry to it,” he said. The bar can sell as many as 50 of the $12 cocktail on a busy night, he said. Mr. Van Lieshout also flavors his highballs with some grapefruit essence, delivered as a finishing mist via a spray bottle.

The place was little more than a crash pad, and most of my socializing was done after work in what we then called simply “the city,” meaning Manhattan, the place that mattered. Of course, it wasn’t always that way. 7 BROOKLYN Francine Stephens knew right away the drink she wanted to put at the COCKTAIL center of her cocktail program. “There were a handful of cocktails that I designed myself. I was open- 1 1/2 oz 77 Wheat Whiskey ing a restaurant in Brooklyn and I didn’t really know what I was doing, 3/4 oz Martini and Rossi but it was Brooklyn, not Manhattan, and I wanted to take a stance.
