It is considered to be a Cretan-Venetian creation from the early fifteenth century. This article discusses the accounts of what has been written on this topic, and endeavors to bring field-changing evidence about its stylistic and iconographic aspects, the date, the artists who created it, the place it originally came from, and the person who had the idea of mounting an altarpiece. To do so, a comparative study on Byzantine and early-Renaissance painting is carried out, along with more attention paid to the history of Santo Stefano castle. As a result, it appears that the artist of the central panel comes from the Mystras painting school between 1360 and 1380, the author of the other six panels is Lorenzo Veneziano around 1360, and the altarpiece was not a single commission, but the mounting of panels coming from separate artworks. The officer Frà Domenico d’Alemagna, commander of Santo Stefano castle, had the idea of mounting different paintings into a seven-panel altarpiece between 1390 and 1410. The aim is to shed more light on a piece of art which stands as a witness from the twilight of the Middle Ages and the dawn of Renaissance; as a messenger from the Catholic and Orthodox pictorial traditions and collaboration; finally as a fosterer of the triple Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance expression. -

Bu temsili özellikleri onların farklı kültür ve coğrafyalarda, farklı işlevlerle çalınmasına sebep olmuştur. Çalındıkları toplumlara özgü özellikleri kendi kimliklerine yerleştirdikleri için; pek çok ülke, bölge ve yöreyle özdeşleşmiş ve bölgesel ve yöresel özellikleri üzerlerinde taşır hale gelmişlerdir. Bu özellikler bağlamında; tellere tırnak teması suretiyle çalınan ve armudî biçime sahip yaylı çalgı incelendiğinde; aynı çalgı tipinin farklı kimlik, işlev ve özelliklerle Ege’nin iki yakasında icra edildiği görülmektedir. Ege Denizindeki Yunanistan adalarından Atina ve Selanik’e, İstanbul’dan İzmir, Fethiye, Antalya ve Burdur’a kadar geniş bir coğrafyada çalınan çalgı; bölgesine göre kâh lyra, kâh kemençe, kâh Yörük kemanesi olur. Bölge genişletilecek olunursa, Ege Denizi’nin paralelinde Akdeniz’e kavuşan Adriyatik’e kıyısı olan Hırvatistan’ın Dubrovnik şehrinde lyrica olarak görülen çalgı, Bulgaristan’da gadulka, Türkiye’nin Batı Karadeniz bölgesinde ise tırnak kemane adını alır. Bu makalede köklü bir tarihe ve geniş bir coğrafi konuma sahip olan söz konusu çalgının, Ege’nin iki yakasında icra edilen versiyonları karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenecektir. Çalgılar iş gördükleri müzik türleri, tarihi ve coğrafi yakınlıkları ve ortak bir mirasa sahip olmalarının getirdiği sonuçlar bağlamında araştırılacak, ses renkleri, yapıları, icra tarzları ve aralarındaki etkileşimler irdelenecektir. -

Techn. & Analytics, A-1060 Vienna, Austria 3Benaki Museum, Department of Conservation, 10674 Athens, Greece ABSTRACT The painting techniques used in seven icons (15th – 17th cent.) of the Cretan School of iconography were investigated in detail. Microsamples (<<1mg) were extracted from the artworks, which are linked to some prominent representatives of the Cretan School. The cross section of the microsamples were observed by Optical Microscopy (OM) in the Vis and in the UV light to reveal (i) the existing stratigraphies and (ii) any later interventions that were performed on top of the original colouring layers. Micro-Fourier Transform Infra Red (μFTIR) and μRAMAN spectroscopies were employed primarily for the identification of the inorganic pigments and for the speculation of the origins of the organic materials. The identification of the latter (dyestuffs, binding media and varnishes) was achieved by High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to a Photodiode Array Detector (HPLC-PDA) and Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The results revealed the rich variety of the materials and the sophisticated painting techniques applied by the painters of the Cretan School. -

Histories are being performed to show the concrete links between past and present and are thus transformed into living communal memories which constitute a rich source of knowledge and identity, speaking for a poetics of Cretanhood. Key words: Crete, identity, dance, mytho-musicology, dancing history Prelude Crete, a Mediterranean island, serves as a connecting link between the so-called East and West. Located at the crossroads between three conti- nents, Europe, Africa and Asia, Crete has also embraced many influences (such as Arab, Venetian, and Turkish). Its forms of musical expression ha- ve been interpreted historically and connected to the fight, the resistance and the numerous rebellions against the Turks (particularly in reference to what is widely perceived in Greece as a “tainted” Ottoman past), who lan- ded on the island in 1645, conquered it in 1669 and controlled it until 1898. In more recent times, an active resistance was raised against the Ger- man invasion during the Second World War. During such periods, in order to claim their land, Cretans sang and danced (Hnaraki 2011, forthcoming). Cretan dances function as threads that have fashioned the fabric of Cre- tan society since ancient times, providing authentic evidence of the continu- ity of Crete’s popular tradition and rhythm. Despite modernization, which can be found in many places all over Greece and Crete, especially nowadays, dance is still a common means of expression for most Cretan people (Hnara- ki 1998, 63). -

Journal of Risk and Financial Management Article Persistent Food Shortages in Venetian Crete: A First Hypothesis Irene Sotiropoulou Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull, Cottingham Road, Hull HU6 7RX, UK; [email protected] Abstract: This paper examines the persistent food shortages in the island of Crete under Venetian rule (1204–1669) through the prism of the monetary system of Venetian territories and in combination with the other economic policies of the Venetian empire. From the available sources and analysis, it seems that the policies of Venice which prioritised the food security of the metropolis, the financial support to the elites, and the elite-favouring monetary and taxation system were contradictory and self- defeating. In particular, the monetary structure of the colonial economy and the taxation system seem to have been forcing both Cretans and Venetian settlers to produce wine for export instead of grain despite the repeated food shortages. The parallel circulation of various high-value (white money) and low-value (black money) currencies in the same economy and the insistence of the Venetian administration to receive taxes in white money seems to have been consistently undermining the food security policy adopted by the same authorities. The paper contributes to the discussion of how parallel currencies can stabilise an economy or can create structural destabilisation propensities, depending on coeval economic structures that usually go unexamined when we examine monetary instruments.
