It is now time to examine the constructive side of anarchism — the libertarian- socialist society that anarchists envision. This is important because anarchism is essentially a constructive theory, in stark contradiction to the picture of usually painted of anarchism as chaos or mindless destruction. In this section of the FAQ we will give an outline of what an anarchist society might look like. Such a society has basic features — such as being non-hierarchical, decentralised and, above all else, spontaneous like life itself. To quote Glenn Al- brecht, anarchists “lay great stress on the free unfolding of a spontaneous order with- out the use of external force or authority.” [“Ethics, Anarchy and Sustainable Develop- ment”, pp. 95–117, Anarchist Studies, vol. 2, no. 2, p. 110] This type of development implies that anarchist society would be organised from the simple to the complex, from the individual upwards to the community, the bio-region and, ultimately, the planet. The resulting society, which would be the outcome of nature freely unfold- ing toward greater diversity and complexity, is ethically preferable to any other sort of order simply because it allows for the highest degree of organic solidarity and freedom. Kropotkin described this vision of a truly free society as follows: “We foresee millions and millions of groups freely constituting them- selves for the satisfaction of all the varied needs of human beings … All these will be composed of human beings who will combine freely … ‘Take pebbles,’ said Fourier, ‘put them in a box and shake them, and they will arrange themselves in a mosaic that you could never get by instructing to anyone the work of arranging them harmoniously.’” [The Place of Anarchism in Socialistic Evolution, pp. 11–12] Anarchist opposition to hierarchy is an essential part of a “spontaneously or- dered” society, for authority stops the free development and growth of the indi- vidual. From this natural growth of individuals, groups and society as a whole an- archists expect a society which meets the needs of all — for individual and social freedom, material goods to meet physical needs and free and equal social relation- ships that meet what could be termed “spiritual needs” (i.e., mental and emotional wellbeing, creativity, ethical development and so on). Any attempt to force soci- ety or individuals into a pre-determined structure which restricts their liberty will produce dis-order as natural balances and development is hindered and distorted in anti-social and destructive directions. Thus an anarchist society must be afree society of free individuals, associating within libertarian structures, rather than a series of competing hierarchies (be they political or economical). Only in freedom 6 can society and individuals develop and create a just and fair world. In Proudhon’s words, “liberty is the mother of order, not its daughter.” As the individual does not exist in a social vacuum, appropriate social condi- tions are required for individual freedom to develop and blossom according to its full potential. The theory of anarchism is built around the central assertion that individuals and their organisations cannot be considered in isolation from each other. That is, social structures shape us, “that there is an interrelationship between the authority structures of institutions and the psychological qualities and attitudes of individuals” and that “the major function of participation is an educative one.” [Ca- role Pateman, Participation and Democratic Theory, p. 27] Anarchism presents this position in its most coherent and libertarian form. In other words, freedom is only sustained and protected by activity under conditions of freedom, namely self- government.

Contrary to State catechism delivered through our schools, America was not born a democracy; rather it emerged as a republic with a distinct bias against democracy. Nonetheless we inherit a great demotic heritage. Abolition, the labor struggle, women’s suffrage, and Civil Rights, for example, struck mighty blows against the established political and economic power of the State. State political economies, whether capitalist, socialist, or communist, each express characteristics of a slave society. All feature oppression, exploitation, starvation, and destitution as constitutive elements. In order to survive in our capitalist society, the average person must sell the contents of her life in exchange for a wage. Fundamentally, I challenge the equation of State schooling with public and/or democratic education. Our schools have not historically belonged to a democratic public. Rather, they have been created, funded, and managed by an elite class wielding local, state, and federal government as its executive arms. Schools are economic institutions, serving a division of labor in the reproduction of the larger economy. Rather than the school, our workplaces are the chief educational institutions of our lives.

Imagine as well that this business has a 20-member executive committee that includes the town mechanic and newspaper vendor, and whose monthly meetings can last three days. The business also changes its CEO and other officers every three years, regardless of whether they have done a good job. Sound impractical? In fact, such an enterprise has transformed hundreds of poor Mexican Zapotec indigenous farmers into owners of a multi-million dollar diversified forest industry. A sign posted at the entrance to the enterprise offices sums up its character succinctly: “In this community private property does not exist. The buying and selling of communal lands is prohibited,” The Forest, Agriculture, and Services Communal Enterprise” of Ixtlán de Juarez, a forest community in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, an hour north of the city of Oaxaca, evolved from traditional forms of governance developed by the Zapotec ancestors of the people of Ixtlán that were later reinforced with agrarian governance structures mandated by the Mexican government. The structures were designed to run community affairs, not businesses. Nevertheless, Ixtlán, along with many other forest communities in that region of Mexico, have successfully fused communal democratic traditions with the principles of competitive market enterprises to achieve economic equity.

Weil, who graduated from the prestigious “Ecole Normale” in 1931, spent her brief thirty-four years engaged in a passionate search for truth. In many ways, she began this quest from a privileged position-the comfort of a middle-class home, parents who placed a high value on superior education, and the advantage of the best schools and teachers. She struggled with limited success to free herself from these advantages and place herself in a position to understand life from the point of view of the humblest laborer.     Lecture 27 Sociology 621 April 30, 2008 What is Socialism? I. What Do Socialists Want? Socialists have traditionally criticized capitalism for the ways in which it violates five central values: 1. Equality: Capitalism generates morally intolerable levels of inequality of material conditions of people. This is especially offensive in its impact on children, but more broadly the levels of material deprivation in a world of affluence generated by capitalism violates a wide range of principles of egalitarian justice held by socialists. 2. Democracy: Capitalism thwarts democracy. By placing the basic economic resources and conditions of investment in hands of private individuals, the capacity of the democratic polity to make decisions about the fate of the community is significantly undermined. 3. Autonomy: Capitalism robs most people of meaningful control over much of their work lives. There is a deep meaning-deficit in most people’s lives because they are pawns in other people’s projects. Capitalism does not merely generate inequality and poverty through exploitation, it generates alienation as well. 4. Community: Capitalism undermines a sense of solidarity among people. As G.A. Cohen has argued, the forms of competition and conflict built into capitalism drive economic activities primarily on the basis of two motives -- greed and fear. Instead of social interaction in economic life being normatively organized around the principle of helping others, it is organized primarily around motive of taking advantage of the weakness of others for one's own gain. This underwrites a culture of selfish individualism and atomism. 5. Efficiency/rationality: This may seem quite odd, but traditionally socialists have criticized capitalism because it was irrational, wasteful and ultimately inefficient.

The extent and breadth of publications on the Spanish Economics Civil War and the Revolution of 1936-9 is ever expanding. Nevertheless, little has been written on the economics of that rev- olution, in which hundreds of collectives were established by the revolutionary working class in city and country, acting on inspira- An Alternative for tion from the National Confederation of Labour (CNT), the anarcho- syndicalist union. a World in Crisis In this pamphlet the author examines the adoption of the ideas of the C.N.T. and looks at some of the anarchist collectives created in 1936. He assesses the success of these experiments which con- stituted a way of life for thousands of people for up to three years, and draws conclusions on the day to day improvements that were produced. The collectives, as well as being a tribute to the tenacity and clar- ity of the ideas of the anarchist movement, can also be taken as another confirmation that anarchist ideas are often taken up by non-revolutionary workers in times of upheaval and with the prospect of a more egalitarian society.
