At the conclusion of the pre-season friendlies we were fairly satisfied with what the games had HONOURS HONOURS SENIOR HONOURS given us. We were obviously chopping and changing the starting line ups regularly and making more substitutions than we would in normal circumstances but we now have a better idea of how Scottish Junior Cup Intermediate Cup SFL Division 2 the squad is shaping up than we did before the games started. The players should also feel a bit Winners : 1941-42 Winners : 1929-30 Champions : 1975/76 sharper in match situations and that will stand us in good stead for when the league games eventu- ally start. Runners-Up : 2008-09 Central League SFL Division 2 I told the players before the Maryhill game to expect a tough game and that is exactly what we got. Sectional League Cup Champions : Runners-Up : 1997/98 These Sectional League cup games generally bring a more competitive challenge than the pre- Winners : 2013-14 1934-35,1940-41,1941-42, Spring Cup season friendlies and I think it’s fair to say that is what we witnessed at Lochburn Park. I have no doubt that we deserved to win the game but a single goal lead is never that comfortable when en- Runners-Up : 2005-06 1944-45,1949-50. Runners-Up : 1975/76 tering the closing stages of such a game. I thought we dominated the second half and should’ve got a second goal but a combination of some very good saves and missed opportunities kept us on Central League Cup Intermediate League Stirlingshire Cup our toes right through to the final whistle. Our first half performance could have been a lot better but Winners : 1932-33,1934-35, Winners : 1929-30 Winners : 1978/79 & 1979/80 we won’t dwell on that and at the end of the day we’ll take the points and move on. 2009-10, 2011-12, 2013-14 Pompey Cup Scottish Cup Semi-Finalists One of the plus points was the performance of young Jordan Shelvey. Despite not getting on the 1989/90 score sheet he made a significant contribution and I’m sure with more experience and time he is West of Scotland Cup Winners : 1951-52,1960-61 capable of improving further. Even if we wanted to go with the same starting eleven throughout Junior Record Victory Winners : 1949-50 Evening Times Cup these Sectional games, availability issues would knock that on the head therefore there will be changes from game to game during this competition, but not as many as the earlier games. The 9-1 v Thorniewood Runners-Up : 1938-39,1955-56 Winners : 1934-35,1940- one thing we don’t need from these games is a large injury list so we’ll keep everything crossed in 41,1941-42,1944-45, 1949-50. Super League Div. 1 Junior Record Defeat the hope that doesn’t happen. Runners –Up : Our games against Yoker usually are tough contests and I don’t expect this one to be any different. Runners-Up : 2010-11 1-6 v Renfrew The players who haven’t previously played in these games will be told how important it is to be 1942-43,1948-49,1952-53 Central League Div. 1 Senior Record Victory prepared for a difficult test. Glasgow Perthshire have had an extremely unfortunate 18 months, SENIOR HONOURS 8-1 v Arbroath losing a significant percentage of the squad that got them promoted into the Super League. During Scottish football’s formative years, however, the ascendancy of the Old Firm was far from set in stone. The exhaustive study of these two extraordinary organisations, therefore, greatly distorts our understanding of Scottish football’s Victorian origins. Both clubs were part of a far greater scene which included not only fellow ‘senior’, well-established clubs, but also any number of ‘junior’, ‘juvenile’ and non-classified football clubs, as well as fledgling associations which oversaw the regulation of the young game.
