Spencer Former Council on Foreign Relations-Hitachi International Affairs Fellow U.S. Embassy, Tokyo / Japan Institute of International Affairs Prospective Executive Officer, Strike-Fighter Squadron 27, NAF Atsugi CDR Abbot is a 1995 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He then attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, receiving a Master’s Degree in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) and later a PhD in International Relations. He is a Navy FA-18 pilot, and has carried out numerous aircraft carrier deployments to include combat at the outset of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. While serving as an exchange FA-18 instructor with the Spanish Air Force he earned an Executive MBA, taken in Spanish, from Instituto de Empresa in Madrid. CDR Abbot then worked as the Department of Defense Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). During that assignment, CDR Abbot completed several deployments in support of the U.S. response to the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and led Interagency Conflict Assessment teams in Ecuador and Nicaragua. CDR Abbot was subsequently selected for a 2011 Council on Foreign Relations-Hitachi International Affairs Fellowship in Japan. During his fellowship CDR Abbot served at U.S. Embassy Tokyo in support of the Operation Tomodachi disaster relief effort. He was designated by the U.S. Ambassador to serve as Deputy Director of the Embassy’s Bilateral Assistance Coordination Cell (BACC), which coordinated U.S. support to the Japanese government regarding the nuclear emergency at Fukushima Daiichi power plant. -

Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program Annual Report 2015 This publication presents the Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) 2015 activities, achievements, and success stories from students and alumni. The JSP gives qualified citizens of developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank an opportunity to take postgraduate studies in economics, business and management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at 29 educational institutions in Asia and the Pacific. Between 1988 and 2015, Japan contributed $165.4 million to the JSP. Since 1988, a total of 3,387 scholarships have been awarded to recipients, including 1,239 women, from 37 member countries. Of the total, 3,028 scholars have completed their courses. An average of 150 scholarships are awarded each year. Received: 22 July 2020; Accepted: 14 September 2020; Published: 17 September 2020 Abstract: Against the backdrop of current sustainability problems, various social innovations for sustainable consumption are emerging across the globe. In order to explore the sustainability potentials of such initiatives, it is vital to understand (1) why consumers are accepting and joining these initiatives and (2) how they perceive the sustainability potentials of initiatives’ offers. In order to correctly estimate the sustainability potential of the initiatives, one should consider possible negative sustainability impacts as well as rebound effects alongside all the positive sustainability effects. Moreover, studies on social innovations for sustainable consumption have mostly been conducted in the context of the Global North. This paper focuses on studying and understanding the current situation of social innovations for sustainable consumption and its sustainability potentials in Tehran, Iran. A qualitative explorative study was conducted using desk research as well as semi-structured in-depth interviews with Iranian consumers. The results of this study confirm the existence of growing supply and demand trends for such initiatives in Iran. Among the different initiatives, those that are copies of international companies or offering alternative mobility solutions seem to have more chances for diffusion, as consumers are more motivated to use their offers. -

This article presents a reflection on the impact and challenges that it generates nationally and internationally as an economic model of current consumption. The analysis is carried out through the results of the discussion document “Retos y posibilidades de la economía colaborativa en América Latina y el Caribe” (Buenadicha, Cañigueral and De León, 2017), through a qualitative design for performing interpretative descriptions. The delivered results show that this economic model, although it has regulatory limitations, basically as regards competition between companies; labor relations within the platforms; fiscal obligations, the protection of users and situations which occur in a digital environment, includes relevant aspects that favor progress and better conditions that lead people to live more peacefully; given that it affects factors that facilitate some everyday processes and tends to generate better living conditions. Likewise, it was found that this model transforms habits, lifestyles, consumer relationships.
