This study performed karyotypic examina- tions of 4 specimens from southern Chinese T. p. fulvidus populations and one specimen from Thai T. p. fulvidus population, which detected distinct karyotypes (2n=30) compared with previous karyotypic descriptions of T. p. pachypus (2n=46) and T. robustula (2n=32) from Malaysia. -

Northern Yellow Bat Roost Selection and Fidelity in South Carolina
Final Report South Carolina State Wildlife Grant SC T-F16AF00598 South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) May 1, 2016-June 30, 2017 Project Title: Northern Yellow Bat Roost Selection and Fidelity in South Carolina Mary Socci, Palmetto Bluff Conservancy (PBC), Jay Walea, PBC, Timothy White, PBC, Jason Robinson, Biological Systems Consultants, Inc., and Jennifer Kindel, SCDNR Objective 1: Radio-track healthy Northern yellow bats (≤ 10) captured by mist netting appropriate habitat in spring, summer, and fall 2016, ideally with at least 3 radio-tracking events in each season. Record roost switching, and describe roost sites selected. Accomplishments: Introduction: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the roost site selection and fidelity of northern yellow bats (Lasiurus intermedius, syn. Dasypterus intermedius) by capturing, radio- tagging and tracking individual L. intermedius at Palmetto Bluff, a 15,000 acre, partially-developed tract in Beaufort County, South Carolina (Figures 1 and 2). Other objectives (2 and 3) were to obtain audio recordings of bats foraging in various habitats across the Palmetto Bluff property, including as many L. intermedius as possible and to initiate a public outreach program in order to educate the community on both the project and the environmental needs of bats, many of which are swiftly declining species in United States. Maryland’s Bats Calvert County Bat Survey 2020 Big Brown Bat – Eptesicus fuscus Larger than other brown bats. Yellowish brown glossy fur. Tail tip extends past skin membrane. Ears are broad and rounded and facial skin dark. Emerges a half hour after sunset, commonly roosts in barns and houses. Becomes active with temperature change and may be flying about mid-winter on warm days. Found in a variety of habitats. Evening Bat – Nycticeius humeralis Velvety brown fur, rounded oval-shaped ears with broad tragus. Facial skin dark. Smaller than Big Brown Bat. Flies slowly and steadily over fields and open areas when hunting. May migrate out of northern range in winters, but poorly known. Northern Myotis – Myotis septentrionalis Very long, pointed tragus. Long ears, yellow to brown fur on back. Pink facial skin around eyes and base of ears. Hunts in upland forests and dear understory vegetation. Found mostly in wooded areas. Hibernates in caves through winter. Little Brown Myotis – Myotis lucifugus Tragus straight, narrow, but not sharply pointed. Dark brown to blackish skin on snout and ears. Fur glossy, usually yellow-brown above, belly buff-yellow to gray- white. Emerges at or after dusk. Typically found near wetlands. Hibernates in caves for 4-6 months in winter. Becomes active again in spring. Eastern Small-footed Myotis – Myotis leibii Rare* Smallest eastern Myotis. Tragus narrow and pointed, black wings and facial skin, fluffy fur yellowish above, cream on belly. Emerges at dusk to feed, begins hibernation later than other Myotis species. Silver-haired Bat – Lasionycteris noctivagans Black fur with frosted tips. -

SC Bat ID Guide Many of the 14 bat species found in SC can be tough to identify due to their nocturnal nature. Take good photos when possible without disturbing bats. Sometimes, dead bats may be found at a roost. If so: take pictures of the bat, wear thick gloves to avoid direct contact, place in two Ziploc bags, transfer to a freezer, and contact Jennifer Kindel (864-419-0739, [email protected]) immediately. DO NOT handle live bats. MOST LIKELY TO USE BAT BOXES: Big Brown Bats (Eptesicus fuscus) Big brown bats are closely associated with humans, often roosting in human-made structures and commonly using buildings as hibernacula. It is the 3rd largest bat in SC. Big brown bats have a relatively heavy body, black ears and wing membranes, and a large head with a broad nose and powerful jaw. The pelage (fur) is dark above and light below and varies from glossy dark brown to pale. The ears and tragus are short and rounded. They can be found throughout the © MerlinTuttle.org state. Little brown bats are considerably smaller with pointier ears and a small muzzle. Evening bats look very similar to big brown bats but are smaller. Brazilian/Mexican Free-tailed Bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) This species is the easiest bat to identify in South Carolina. It is the only bat with a tail that extends beyond the tail membrane. The upper lip of this species is strongly wrinkled, the blackish ears are short and nearly square, and the short, velvety pelage is dark brown to dark gray. -

Chapter 2 The raw echolocation call recordings in EchoBank were largely made and contributed by members of the ‘Echolocation Call Consortium’ (see full list in Chapter 2). The R code for the diversity maps was provided by Kamran Safi. Custom adjustments were made to the computer program SonoBat by developer Joe Szewczak, Humboldt State University, in order to select echolocation calls for measurement. Chapter 3 The supertree construction process was carried out using Perl scripts developed and provided by Olaf Bininda-Emonds, University of Oldenburg, and the supertree was run and dated by Olaf Bininda-Emonds.
