PRIZES AND AWARDS

The Marshall-Wvthe Medallion Established in 1966 by the faculty of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, the Marshall-Wythe Medallion is awarded annually to distinguished leaders of the legal profession in the United States and abroad. The medallion hears the bas-relief profiles of John Marshall and George Wythe, encircled by the name and date of founding of the Law School. On the reverse is the coat of arms of the College encircled by the name and date of the founding of the College. The medallion was designed by Professor Carl Roseberg of the Department of Fine Arts. In 1971 the recipient was the Honorable Bernard G. Segal, past President of the American Bar Association. In 1972 the recipient is the Honorable Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Thomas Jefferson Awards The Thomas Jefferson Awards were established through the generosity of the Robert Earl McConnell Foundation. The Jefferson Award is made to that member of the faculty or staff who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best exemplifies the character, influence, principles and ideas of Thomas Jefferson. The Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award is made to a teaching member of the College community who has contributed to the betterment of the individual and his Society. Lord Botetourt Medal The Lord Botetourt Medal was established in 1772 "for the honor and encour- agement of literary merit." It is awarded annually to the graduating senior who has attained the greatest distinction in scholarship. The James Frederick Carr Memorial Cup Established in honor of James Frederick Carr, who served with distinction in the first World War, the James Frederick Carr Memorial Cup is awarded annually to the graduating senior man who best combines the qualities of character, scholarship and leadership. Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards were established by the New York Southern Society and are granted to not more than one man and one woman in the graduating class and to one other person who has a close relation to the College. In the selection of the recipients nothing is considered except the possession of such characteristics of heart, mind and conduct as evince a spirit of love for and helpfulness to other men and women.
