The trip from the airport to Residential Pina provided an initial view of a Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus canariensis a subspecies endemic to Macaronesia Ref Note 1 *) and numbers of Pale Swift (Apus unicolour a species endemic to Macaronesia *) which was also seen again from the courtyard of the hotel. Martin provided the group with a small map of Madeira and Funchal to provide some orientation and Luis provided an overview of the tours that we would undertake over the next few days, which would include an additional optional boat trip on a ridged inflatable boat that afternoon. After a light lunch those opting for the additional boat trip walked down to the harbour.

Madeira 8–12 July 2017 Pelagic Extension to 15 July Participants John Thorogood Brian Roberts-Wray Emma Rees-Wray Massimiliano Dettori James and Vivienne Harvey Frederick Alway Bahar Bilgen William Dixon Robin Griffiths Leaders Catarina Correia-Fagundes and Hugo Romano Trocaz Pigeon Day 1 Most of the group arrived at Madeira’s airport around 19:30 after a 40-minutes delay on the flight schedule and our guides were waiting for us outside the baggage claim to take us to the hotel. The drive to the hotel was only five minutes and after check-in we had dinner and a nice rest after it. Day 2 We started the day visiting the most arid area in Madeira, on the eastern tip, Ponta de São Lourenço, where we watched Berthelot’s Pipits, Eurasian Kestrels and Clouded Yellow Butterflies. We only had a glimpse of two Rock Petronias flying and sitting on a rock for less than 20 seconds which did not allow everyone to have a good look at them through the telescope. Then we drove to the centre of the village of Caniçal where we looked for Spanish Sparrows and where a male displayed quite well. A male Blackcap and Eurasian Collared- doves were also observed here. After we headed to the north side of the island, to Faial, in search for the endemic Trocaz Pigeon and where we were very successful watching a few flying and others sitting on branches on open view. Lunch was taken at a restaurant with a really nice view over the green cliffs diving into the blue of the ocean and from where we saw more Eurasian Kestrels and Trocaz Pigeons flying and a Eurasian Sparrowhawk.

AERC Western Palearctic list, July 2015 About the list: 1) The limits of the Western Palearctic region follow for convenience the limits defined in the “Birds of the Western Palearctic” (BWP) series (Oxford University Press). 2) The AERC WP list follows the systematics of Voous (1973; 1977a; 1977b) modified by the changes listed in the AERC TAC systematic recommendations published online on the AERC web site. For species not in Voous (a few introduced or accidental species) the default systematics is the IOC world bird list. 3) Only species either admitted into an "official" national list (for countries with a national avifaunistic commission or national rarities committee) or whose occurrence in the WP has been published in detail (description or photo and circumstances allowing review of the evidence, usually in a journal) have been admitted on the list. Category D species have not been admitted. 4) The information in the "remarks" column is by no mean exhaustive. It is aimed at providing some supporting information for the species whose status on the WP list is less well known than average. This is obviously a subjective criterion. In the present paper an update of the 1995 checklist of the birds of the archipelagos of Madeira and Selvagens is presented. A total of 337 species and subspecies are listed, of which 42 are new additions to the previous checklist, including 4 new records, Muscovy Duck, Cairina moschata, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Psittacula krameri, Hooded Crow, Corvus cornix cornix and Iberian Chiffchaff, Phylloscopus ibericus. Comments are made on the new additions and new records. The checklist indicates the presence, or not, of a specimen in the collection of the Natural History Museum of Funchal, breeding status, original reference and a qualitative index of abundance and-or frequency. RESUMO. Este trabalho pretende actualizar a lista de aves dos arquipél agos da Madeira e das Selvagens publicada em 1995. Um total de 337 taxa são listados, 42 dos quais constituem adições à lista anterior, incluindo 4 novos assinalamentos, Pato-do-mato, Cairina moschata, Periquito-de-colar, Psittacula krameri, Gralha- cinzenta, Corvus cornix cornix e Felosa-Ibér ica, Phylloscopus ibericus. Madeira 3rd – 12th July 2019 Trip report by John Wright. Email: [email protected] I decided on a summer cetacean watching trip to Madeira with the main targets being Spotted Dolphin and Bryde’s Whale. But coming across a Monk Seal was, of course, very much on my mind. I was confident in seeing the first species, in with a chance for the second and needed lots of luck for the third. But whatever the outcome its always enjoyable going on whale and dolphin watching trips. My wife, Jane, joined me on this trip. I did some research into accommodation and flights but in the end, we settled on a package holiday as it suited us price wise, accommodation wise and airport wise. Our hotel was in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The island of Madeira is in the North Atlantic and is an autonomous region of Portugal. It is around 520km west of the Moroccan coast, 400km north of Tenerife (Canary Islands) and 966km south east of the Azores. We booked four whale/dolphin excursions in advance with Ventura Nature Emotions (www.venturadomar.com/) plus a day trip to the Desertas Islands where I knew we stood at least a chance of seeing a Monk Seal. The Desertas Islands are 25km south east of Madeira. As it turned out we also had one whale/dolphin excursion with Rota dos Cetaceous (https://www.rota-dos- cetaceos.pt/index.php/en/) as a trip rearrangement by Ventura and one with Madeira Wind Birds (https://www.madeirawindbirds.com/) which I booked whilst I was out there.

Madeira 2007 May Beautiful scenery, quality birding A Familiarisation Trip in Association with Madeira Wind Birds Ashley Beolens & Zoe Halliday 21st – 28th May 2007 Madeira is Portuguese for wood; it is an archipelago situated in the north Atlantic; originally known to the Romans as Purple Islands. It is the home of a fortified wine and, contrary to popular belief, nothing whatsoever to do with the eponymous cake! Our arrival on our Air Portugal flight, 4 hours from Gatwick, marked the beginning of a mixed week of relaxation and bird watching. Staying in some of the island’s top hotels, our trip was set to be an experience neither of us quite expected. They say you can experience four seasons in one day on Madeira and they are not wrong, micro climates seem to exist in each valley, as an example – we had pouring rain when entering a tunnel followed by blistering sunshine when exiting. The weather does determine the activities for the day unfortunately, as heavy rain can cause rockslides in the mountains, and fog can close the passes and harbour. That said it never seems too cold. The Hotels Casa Velha do Palheiro 21st – 23rd May We arrived at the 5* Casa Velha do Palheiro – a 19th century hunting lodge now converted into a stunning hotel comprised of 37 luxurious rooms – late in the evening and were taken directly to our junior suite where we experienced our first taste of how opulent our destination was. Set high in the mountains overlooking Funchal, with the world famous Palheiro Gardens adjoining one side and surrounded by the exclusive private golf course, the location is both idyllic and functional for a birdwatcher.
