Kültür ve Turizm Bakanı Festivalin hazırlanmasında emeği geçen herkese teşekkürlerimi sunar, festivalin kuşaklar boyu Minister of Culture and Tourism sürmesini temenni ederim. One of the most important tourism cities on the world without any doubt, Antalya today possesses the footprints of numerous civilizations that lived on it. Being ahead of its age in art and architecture along thousands of years of its known and unknown history, Antalya has always been in an important location in the vivid commercial and political history of the Mediterranean basin. While Antalya hosts more than 10 million tourists every year, it is a special city that captivates them with the unique pieces of arts from its history in addition to its natural beauties. The city puts a lot of effort that increases day by day in order to protect and more importantly to understand and explain the historical heritage of the previous ages. Besides all of its values, Antalya continues to be one of the cities, where the heart of the art beats. Antalya hosts the 4th “Turkish State Theatres Antalya International Theatre Festival” this year at such an intercultural junction, at a point where theatre is honoured with its past and art opens up the door of immortality. In this precious city, where many festivals from cinema to music, from ballet to opera take place, the echoes from thousands of years will find their souls again. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the preparation of this festival and wish that this festival continues for generations. • On the Role of the Rockefeller Foundation in Establishing Theatre Education Programmes and Transnational Theatrical Spaces in Turkey During the Cold War
Journal of Global Theatre History ISSN: 2509-6990 Vol. 4, No. 2, 2020 Hasibe Kalkan On the Role of the Rockefeller Foundation in Establishing Theatre Education Programmes and Transnational Theatrical Spaces in Turkey during the Cold War Abstract This article focuses on the American impact and, in particular, that of the Rockefeller Foundation on the theatre landscape of Turkey, especially on its educational programmes. In the years of the Cold War, Turkey played a strategic role for the United States. In order to establish an ideological base against the nearby Soviet Union, the Rockefeller Foundation was used to build up and fund a network of artists and academics, which included theatre professionals and academics in Turkey. The article also attempts to show the transnational spaces that have emerged for some artists as a result of the opening to the US. Keywords Cold War, Rockefeller Foundation, Theatre Education, Theatre Studies, Playwrighting Author Hasibe Kalkan teaches at the Department of Theatre Studies at Istanbul University and heads the Department of Dramaturgy and Playwriting. Her research interests include documentary theatre, intercultural theatre, and theatre semiotics. Kalkan has worked as a dramaturge at the Istanbul State Theatre and writes theatre reviews for various daily newspapers and magazines. Introduction The foundation of theatre education programmes in Turkey was clearly shaped by the modernization and Europeanization process in the country following the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923. However, it must be remembered that the move towards the West had begun much earlier. The leadership of the late Ottoman Empire, beginning in the 18th century, turned to the West to adopt military and, later, technocratic achievements in order to halt its steady decline and return the empire to its former strength.

"Lest They Perish": The Armenian Genocide and the Making of Modern Humanitarian Media in the U.S., 1915-1925 Abstract Between celebrity spokesmen and late night informercials, international humanitarian aid organizations use multiple media strategies to generate public interest in their programs. Though this humanitarian media has seemingly proliferated in the past thirty years, these publicity campaigns are no recent phenomenon but one that emerged from the World War I era. "Lest They Perish" is a case study of the modernization of international humanitarian media in the U.S. during and after the Armenian genocide from 1915 to 1925. This study concerns the Near East Relief, an international humanitarian organization that raised and contributed over $100,000,000 in aid to the Armenians during these years of violence. As war raged throughout Europe and Western Asia, American governmental propagandists kept the public invested in the action overseas. Private philanthropies were using similar techniques aimed at enveloping prospective donors in "whirlwind campaigns" to raise funds.

THE WESTERN QUESTION IN GREECE AND TURKEY A STUDY IN THE CONTACT OF CIVILISATIONS BY ARNOLD J. TOYNBEE ‘For we are also His offspring’ CONSTABLE AND COMPANY LTD LONDON · BOMBAY · SYDNEY 1922 TO THE PRESIDENT AND FACULTY OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE FOR GIRLS AT CONSTANTINOPLE THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED BY THE AUTHOR AND HIS WIFE IN GRATITUDE FOR THEIR HOSPITALITY AND IN ADMIRATION OF THEIR NEUTRAL-MINDEDNESS IN CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH NEUTRALITY IS ‘HARD AND RARE’ PREFACE THIS book is an attempt to place certain recent events in the Near and Middle East in their historical setting, and to illustrate from them several new features of more enduring importance than the events themselves. It is not a discussion of what the peace-settlement in the East ought to be, for the possibility of imposing a cut-and-dried scheme, if it ever really existed, was destroyed by the landing of the Greek troops at Smyrna in May 1919. At any rate, from that moment the situation resolved itself into a conflict of forces beyond control; the Treaty of Sèvres was still-born; and subsequent conferences and agreements, however imposing, have had and are likely to have no more than a partial and temporary effect. On the other hand, there have been real changes in the attitude of the Western public towards their Governments’ Eastern policies, which have produced corresponding changes in those policies themselves; and the Greeks and Turks have appeared in unfamiliar roles. The Greeks have shown the same unfitness as the Turks for governing a mixed population. The Turks, in their turn, have become exponents of the political nationalism of the West.
