Reflections on Bandista
Turkey and Copyleft Music Production: Reflections on Bandista Ilkin Mehrabov Karlstad University, Sweden [email protected] Abstract This article focuses on copyleft music production in Turkey through a case study on Bandista, a music collective with strong oppositional stance formed in 2006 in Istanbul. Describing its musical performances as "situationist experiment of rage and rapture" Bandista became immensely popular in the Turkish political music scenery after releasing its debut album De te fabula narratur in 2009 under the copyleft scheme. The article tries to look at the copyleft with the notion of 'music as performance' in mind, and argues that copyleft politics are essential, especially for new music bands to form themselves as independent actors within the music scene. Keywords: Bandista, copyleft music, Turkey, performance, punk Introduction Bookshelves, academic journals, popular magazines and from its earliest emergence the Internet itself is filled with books, articles, papers and web-posts about the issue of copyright, and most of the time people involved within the discussion about the pros and cons of the matter are divided into two distinctive camps. Fierce copyright advocate Adam D. Moore defines these camps as "cyber-punks, hackers, and net surfers who claim that 'information wants to be free' and that intellectual property rights give undue credit to authors and inventors", and on the other hand, "collected cannons of Anglo-American copyright, patent, and trade secret law" (Moore 2001: 1). Notion of copyright and heated debates over it seems to point to one of the most pressing issues within the current global economic order: Culture Industry and its continuation as “business as usual'. -

TURKEY 2020 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Turkey is a constitutional republic with an executive presidential system and a unicameral 600-seat parliament (the Grand National Assembly). In presidential and parliamentary elections in 2018, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe observers expressed concern regarding restrictions on media reporting and the campaign environment, including the jailing of a presidential candidate that restricted the ability of opposition candidates to compete on an equal basis and campaign freely. The National Police and Jandarma, under the control of the Ministry of Interior, are responsible for security in urban areas and rural and border areas, respectively. The military has overall responsibility for border control and external security. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over law enforcement officials, but mechanisms to investigate and punish abuse and corruption remained inadequate. Members of the security forces committed some abuses. Under broad antiterror legislation passed in 2018 the government continued to restrict fundamental freedoms and compromised the rule of law. Since the 2016 coup attempt, authorities have dismissed or suspended more than 60,000 police and military personnel and approximately 125,000 civil servants, dismissed one-third of the judiciary, arrested or imprisoned more than 90,000 citizens, and closed more than 1,500 nongovernmental organizations on terrorism-related grounds, primarily for alleged ties to the movement of cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom the government accused of masterminding the coup attempt and designated as the leader of the “Fethullah Terrorist Organization.” Significant human rights issues included: reports of arbitrary killings; suspicious deaths of persons in custody; forced disappearances; torture; arbitrary arrest and continued detention of tens of thousands of persons, including opposition politicians and former members of parliament, lawyers, journalists, human rights activists, and employees of the U.S. -

A Brief History of Kurdish Music Recordings in Turkey

REIGLE Centre for Advanced Studies in Music, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey [email protected] | This article delineates the complex history of Kurdish music recordings in Turkey by dividing it into seven periods. The first period begins with the very first recording of Kurdish music, in 1902. Political events demarcate the remaining periods, embracing the founding of the Turkish Republic, three military coups, the initial legalization of Kurdish language use and further easing of restrictions on broadcasting. The recordings discussed here include those recorded in, manufactured in, or imported to Turkey, both legally and illegally. In addition to the legal environment, the evolution of sound recording and distribution technology also shaped access to and use of Kurdish musics. It is hoped that further research be undertaken urgently, before the remaining sound recordings of the 20th century disappear, and the people who understand their history leave us. As in every society, the forms of mediation – the types of commodification – shaped the distribution, use, and impact of music, one of society‘s most powerful forces. For Kurdish- language speakers in Turkey, however, language restrictions led to an extraordinary gap in the recording of everyday music practice. This article should also call attention to important lacunae in the literature, including a rigorous discography, and documentation of performers and performance practices. -

Journal of Global Theatre History ISSN: 2509-6990 Vol. 4, No. 2, 2020 Hasibe Kalkan On the Role of the Rockefeller Foundation in Establishing Theatre Education Programmes and Transnational Theatrical Spaces in Turkey during the Cold War Abstract This article focuses on the American impact and, in particular, that of the Rockefeller Foundation on the theatre landscape of Turkey, especially on its educational programmes. In the years of the Cold War, Turkey played a strategic role for the United States. In order to establish an ideological base against the nearby Soviet Union, the Rockefeller Foundation was used to build up and fund a network of artists and academics, which included theatre professionals and academics in Turkey. The article also attempts to show the transnational spaces that have emerged for some artists as a result of the opening to the US. Keywords Cold War, Rockefeller Foundation, Theatre Education, Theatre Studies, Playwrighting Author Hasibe Kalkan teaches at the Department of Theatre Studies at Istanbul University and heads the Department of Dramaturgy and Playwriting. Her research interests include documentary theatre, intercultural theatre, and theatre semiotics. Kalkan has worked as a dramaturge at the Istanbul State Theatre and writes theatre reviews for various daily newspapers and magazines. Introduction The foundation of theatre education programmes in Turkey was clearly shaped by the modernization and Europeanization process in the country following the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923. However, it must be remembered that the move towards the West had begun much earlier. The leadership of the late Ottoman Empire, beginning in the 18th century, turned to the West to adopt military and, later, technocratic achievements in order to halt its steady decline and return the empire to its former strength. -

La storia di una canzone di libertà nel paese della Mezzaluna Consuelo Emilj Malara Abstract: The aim of the article is to illustrate the story of the Italian song “Bella Ciao” and the reasons that made this song out of Italy important for those who sing it and what it represents for peoples who have never known anti-fascism, focusing on why it is famous in Turkey. I will write about the folk’s origins of “Bella Ciao” and I will try to define in its musical characteristics. Further, will be illustrated “Bella Ciao” in musical Turkey’s scene. The purpose of the article is to highlight the causes of the popularity of this song in Turkey and why that song the meaning that this song has taken on in the Anatolian Country. I conclude my article with my observations focusing the meaning that the song “Bella Ciao” has assumed. Con l’avvento della radio e lo sviluppo dei mezzi di trasmissione, la canzone iniziò a ricoprire un ruolo cruciale all’interno della società, imponendosi nella vita quotidiana come mezzo comunicativo per la sua immediatezza.1 Attorno al fenomeno “canzone” si creò una vera e propria industria, sia in termini quantitativi in ore di ascolto, sia in termini di vendite che di eventi canori, creando importanti giri d’affari.
