Die Veröffentlichung von ‘Diamonds’ fällt mit dem 50-jährigen Jubiläum der phänomenalen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Elton John und seinem Songwritingpartner Bernie Taupin zusammen. Kennengelernt haben sie sich 1967 über eine Anzeige in einem Musikmagazin, in der Songwriter gesucht wurden. Elton und Bernie wurden zu einem der langlebigsten Songwriter-Duos aller Zeiten und dank ihres nachhaltigen Erfolges lassen sie ihre Konkurrenz weit hinter sich. Mit ‘Your Song’ katapultierte sich das Duo 1971 ins Rampenlicht. Seitdem kennen sie keinen kreativen Stillstand und haben mit einer ununterbrochenen Reihe zeitloser Alben eine ganze Ära geprägt. ‘Candle In The Wind’ stand in drei Jahrzehnten an der Spitze der Charts und das 2016 unter Beifallstürmen erschienene ‘Wonderful, Crazy, Night’ schaffte es in Großbritannien in die Top 10. Insgesamt ist ihr Backkatalog und ihr musikalisches Erbe unübertroffen. Das gilt für seine Langlebigkeit, die Kreativität und den kommerziellen Erfolg gleichermaßen. Elton sagt über ihre Beziehung: ‘Nach mittlerweile 50 Jahren ist unsere Beziehung besser als je zuvor. Es gab Momente, da haben wir mit anderen Leuten gearbeitet, aber unserer Liebe hat das keinen Abbruch getan. Ich liebe Bernie heute mehr als je zuvor und ich glaube, ihm geht es genauso, denn wir haben getrennte Leben geführt; wir schreiben in getrennten Zimmern. Unsere Liebe und unser Respekt für- einander sind über die Jahre immer stärker geworden.’ Bernie Taupin erklärt: ‘Wir haben immer noch wahnsinnigen Spaß an unserer Arbeit. Wenn wir zusammen etwas schreiben, dann ist da immer noch diese Magie und das ist einfach durch nichts zu ersetzen. Dieses Gefühl nutzt sich auch nicht ab.’ Die 2CD-Version enthält 34 Songs und ein 10-seitiges Booklet mit zeitgenössischen Illustrationen legendärer Elton John-Looks. Die Doppel-LP aus 180g schwerem Vinyl befindet sich in einem tollen Klappcover. Das limitierte 3CD-Set befindet sich in einer schönen Box mit Deckel. Dazu gibt es ein 72- seitiges gebundenes Buch mit Anmerkungen zu den Hintergründen der einzelnen Tracks und fünf Postkarten mit Illustrationen von Elton John. Alle drei Formate enthalten einige der beliebtesten Songs aller Zeiten und alle Illustrationen stammen von dem zeitgenössischen Künstler Richard Kilroy. Gerade jetzt, da diese ultimative Sammlung angekündigt wird, ist Elton Johns Relevanz und Einfluss auf die Welt der Musik, Mode und der Unterhaltung so lebendig wie eh und je. Erst letzte Woche präsentierte Gucci seine Kollektion für Frühjahr/Sommer 2018, für die der Designer Alessandro Michele sich von Elton Johns unnachahmlichen Stil inspirieren ließ und sogar einige Teile aus dem Archiv der Stilikone als Bezugspunkte nahm. Außerdem besuchte Elton John die Premiere des weltweiten Blockbusters Kingsman: The Golden Circle, in dem er sich selbst spielt und dabei herrlich ironisch auftritt und auch den Kritikern positiv auffiel. Auch in Kingsman: The Golden Circle sind einige der zeitlosen Track von ‘Diamonds’ zu hören; darunter z. B. ‘Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)’. Es ist eine einmalige Karriere, die die Kulturlandschaft für immer geprägt hat.
