Photo by: Scott Roth/AP. A simile makes a direct comparison between two things. It uses the words "like" or "as." The comparison reveals a new meaning. For example, the rock group Foreigner wrote a song called "Cold as Ice." The lyrics include a simile: You're as cold as ice You're willing to sacrifice our love In this example, the lyrics are not talking about the weather. Instead, they compare a woman to ice to show her emotions. Many songs can be used to teach about similes.

  • Paul Anka Friday, April 15
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FEBRUARY 8, 2011 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS PAUL ANKA FRIDAY, APRIL 15 Richmond, BC – With more than fifty years in the music industry, Paul Anka is one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. Born and raised in Ottawa, Anka recorded his first single, “I Confess” at the age of fourteen and after turning sixteen, he recorded what would be his best known song of all time, “Diana” … a song about his crush on an older high school friend. Released in 1957 on ABC-Paramount, it sold over 10 million copies and launched his career at an international teen idol. Anka soon established himself as a successful artist and songwriter penning his Top 10 US hits, “You Are My Destiny”, “Lonely Boy”, “Put Your Head On My Shoulder”, “Puppy Love”, “My Home Town” and “Dance On Little Girl”. It was in 1962 when Johnny Carson made his debut as the host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show” with Anka contributing one of the most recognizable theme songs in television history. Then in 1969, he wrote “My Way” for Frank Sinatra followed two years later with “She’s A Lady” for Tom Jones. Anka had another wave of chart-topping hits throughout the 70’s including “(You’re) Having My Baby”, “I Don’t Like To Sleep Alone” and “Time of Your Life”. His success held through the 80’s with “Hold Me ‘Til The Morning Comes” … a duet with Peter Cetera which they recorded in 1983. Among his later releases were the 1996 Spanish-language album, Amigos and Anka Live 2000 which was recorded during a worldwide tour.

He sang in the choir at St. Elijah Syrian Orthodox Church and briefly studied piano. He honed his writing skills with journalism courses, even working for a spell at the Ottawa Citizen. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. He performed at every amateur night he could get to in his mother’s car, unbeknownst to his her of course. Soon after, he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest that required him to spend three months collecting soup can labels. It was there his dream was solidified, he was going to make it as a singer composer; there was not a doubt in his young tenacious mind. In 1956, he convinced his parents to let him travel to Los Angeles, where he called every record company in the phone book looking for an audition. A meeting with Modern Records led to the release of Anka’s first single, “Blau-Wile Deverest Fontaine.” It was not a hit, but Anka kept plugging away, going so far to sneak into Fats Domino’s dressing room to meet the man and his manager in Ottawa. When Anka returned New York in 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records.

Lee: Billy Joel and the Practice of Law BILLY JOEL AND THE PRACTICE OF LAW: MELODIES TO WHICH A LAWYER MIGHT WORK Randy Lee* Piano Man has ten tracks.1 The Stranger has nine.2 This work has seven melodies to which a lawyer might work. I. TRACK 1: FROM PIANO BARS TO FIRES (WHY WE HAVE LAWYERS) Fulton Sheen once observed, “[t]he more you look at the clock, the less happy you are.”3 Piano Man4 begins by looking at the clock. “It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday.”5 As “[t]he regular crowd shuffles in,” there’s “an old man” chasing a memory, “sad” and “sweet” but elusive and misremembered.6 There are people who pre- fer “loneliness” to “being alone,” people in the wrong place, people out of time, no matter how much time they might have.7 They all show up at the Piano Man’s bar hoping “to forget about life for a while”8 because, as the song reminds us, sometimes people can find themselves in a place where their life is hard to live with.
