Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

ove for thought Pre - K & K Integrated Physical Activities in the Early Learning Environment M ove for Thought Pre-K & K The Move for Thought Pre-K & K (M4T pre-K & K) was developed mainly for children (3-6 years old) in the preschool environment. However, all activities are developmentally appropriate for children in kindergarten classroom. Iowa Team Nutrition and the Iowa Department of Education would like to thank you for using the M4T pre-K & K program. The M4T pre-K & K program can be used to assist in: meeting physical activity needs, improving physical literacy and fundamental gross motor skills, developing the “whole child”, by practicing physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills. The kit was developed by Spyridoula Vazou, PhD, Department of Kinesiology, Iowa State University. The activities and supporting files were developed by Dr. Vazou and Jacqueline Krogh, M.S., Department of Human Development & Family Studies, Iowa State University. Music was developed by Elizabeth Stegemöller, PhD, Department of Kinesiology, Iowa State University. Songs were adapted from “You and Me makes We” book by Elizabeth Schwartz. YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -

Affirms Elton John Win In 'Nikita' Copyright Row By David McAfee Law360, New York (July 17, 2013, 4:21 PM ET) -- The Seventh Circuit on Wednesday shot down a bid by a South African lyricist to revive a copyright suit accusing Elton John of stealing the words to the song "Nikita," holding that the two songs aren't substantially similar as a matter of law. The decision comes after photojournalist and aspiring songwriter Guy Hobbs told the Seventh Circuit in March that an Illinois judge's dismissal relied on a Seventh Circuit decision that contradicted U.S. Supreme Court precedent and effectively eliminated copyright protection. Hobbs argued that Peters v. West, the 2011 Seventh Circuit ruling cited by U.S. District Judge Amy J. St. Eve in her October dismissal, defies Supreme Court precedent establishing copyright protection when an author creates an original work by arranging unprotected elements. But the three-judge appellate panel on Wednesday affirmed Judge St. Eve's decision in favor of John, his writing partner Bernie Taupin and publisher Big Pig Music, saying that Hobbs' song "Natasha" and Elton John's "Nikita" aren’t similar enough to support the copyright infringement claim. "We agree with the district court that 'Natasha' and 'Nikita' simply tell different stories, and are separated by much more than small cosmetic differences," Circuit Judge Daniel A. Manion wrote in the opinion. "We conclude that as a matter of law 'Natasha' and 'Nikita' are not substantially similar because they do not share enough unique features to give rise to a breach of the duty not to copy another's work." Hobbs, a resident of Cape Town, South Africa, brought suit in April 2012, saying he based the lyrics for the unpublished 1982 song "Natasha" on a love affair he had with a Russian waitress while working as a photographer aboard the Russian cruise ship MS Taras Shevchenko. -

The MJCast (Jamon): Jonathan 'Sugarfoot' Moffett worked with Michael Jackson and the Jacksons as their tour drummer starting in 1979 with the "Destiny Tour", and continued to work with them later for the "Triumph Tour", the "Victory Tour", Michael's 1988 Grammy Awards performance, the "HIStory World Tour", his "30th Anniversary" shows, and, eventually, "This is It". MJCast (Q): Not only did Jonathan Sugarfoot have the honor of collaborating closely with the Jacksons, but he has also toured with artists such as Madonna, George Michael, Prince, Elton John, and Lionel Richie. MJCast (Jamon): Jonathan, it's an honor to have you here on the MJCast how're you going? Jonathan Moffett: I'm doing pretty good—I've been doing pretty good. A little mistake in there—I'd never toured with Prince. I've worked in a studio [where] Madonna and Prince [were] on the same song "Keep it Together", so I've never toured. I don't want misinformation to get out there, so I've never toured with Prince, although he has asked me about touring with him, which never just came about because he was at a lot of the after parties at the Jackson shows, Elton shows, and cameo shows, and he'd speak to me and give me a combination of performance and he asked me about playing with him, but it just never happened. -
