(And yes, we know it says flying fish...) 2 3 THE COMMODORE‛S COLUMN In a recent column I mused on the whimsy of naming inanimate objects in your boat and building them up into their own personalities. Who doesn‛t name their auto pilot for example? The other day I was reminded by a friend who had read the column – at least somebody did – that there are also less animate, more ethereal crew members. They are always there in the background, they bring good or sometimes not so good luck and sometimes they speak to you. We‛ve all had the experience. It‛s a quiet night with the boat slipping gently along and all is well with the world. You are in that dreamy state where you are struggling to stay awake and you become aware of a repetitive voice just at the threshold of your hearing. It is saying something which you can‛t quite understand. It‛s a distant whisper; you are not quite sure of the language or the message and you know it shouldn‛t be there. Your rational being tells you it is no more than a combination of harmonics from the rigging combined with a creak from the steering gear, but you are not convinced and struggle to understand. You wonder if you are losing the plot; you know there can‛t be a Pure charm. voice, but still you listen. In my friend‛s case the ghostly crew is defi nitely female and rejoices in the name of Miriam Ironing Board. That‛s because ‘Miriam ironing board‛ is all she Why not visit us at ever says.     AIRCURRENTS THE 2009 ATLANTIC EDITor’s noTE: November 30 marked the official end of the Atlantic HURRICANE SEASON hurricane season. With nine named storms, including three hurricanes, and no U.S. landfalling hurricanes, this season was the second quietest since IN PERSPECTIVE 1995, the year the present period of above-average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) began. This year’s relative inactivity stands in sharp contrast to the 2008 season, during which Hurricanes Dolly, Gustav, and Ike battered the Gulf Coast, causing well over 10 billion USD in insured losses. With no U.S. landfalling hurricanes in 2009, but a near miss in the Northeast, 2009 reminds us yet again of the dramatic short term variability in hurricane 12.2009 landfalls, regardless of whether SSTs are above or below average. The proposed method combines experimental data concerning the added resistance at model scale with full scale Reynolds Averages Navier–Stokes (RANS) computations, using an in-house solver. In order to simulate the propeller performance, the actuator disk concept is employed. The propeller thrust is calculated in the time domain, assuming that the total resistance of the ship is the sum of the still water resistance and the added component derived by the towing tank data. The unsteady RANS equations are solved until self-propulsion is achieved at a given time step. Then, the computed values of both the flow rate through the propeller and the thrust are stored and, after the end of the examined time period, they are processed for calculating the variation of Shaft Horsepower (SHP) and RPM of the ship’s engine. The method is applied for a bulk carrier which has been tested in model scale at the towing tank of the Laboratory for Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics (LSMH) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE EFFECT OF HURRICANE SANDY ON NEW JERSEY ATLANTIC COASTAL MARSHES EVALUATED WITH SATELLITE IMAGERY Diana Marie Roman, Master of Science, August 2015 Directed By: Professor, Michael S. Kearney, Environmental Science and Technology Hurricane Sandy, one of several large extratropical hurricanes to impact New Jersey since 1900, produced some of the most extensive coastal destruction within the last fifty years. Though the damage to barrier islands from Sandy was well-documented, the effect of Sandy on the New Jersey coastal marshes has not. The objective of this analysis, based on twenty-three Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data sets collected between 1984 and 2011 and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images collected between 2013 and 2014 was to determine the effect of Hurricane Sandy on the New Jersey Atlantic coastal marshes. Image processing was performed using ENVI image analysis software with the NDX model (Rogers and Kearney, 2004). Results support the conclusion that the marshes were stable between 1984 and 2006, but had decreased in vegetation density coverage since 2007. Hurricane Sandy caused the greatest damage to low-lying marshes located close to where landfall occurred. Aiken worked quietly and competently in the Columbia district mainly at coastal forts and on the steamer Beaver as a blacksmith until March 1, 1849 at which point he went to California, most certainly to participate in the Gold Rush. He appears to have returned to settle in the Willamette Valley and had an association with the HBC until 1852. Aiken's family life or subsequent activities have not been traced.

The “Bremen”, built in 1929, won the Blue Riband of the crossing of the Atlantic with the speed of 27.9 knots. • Other smaller passenger ships, such as the American “President Hoover” and “President Coolidge” of 1931, started to appear with bulbous bows although they were still considered as experimental, by ship owners and shipyards. • In 1935, the “Normandie”, built with a bulbous bow, attained the 30 knots. Abstract The future may herald higher energy prices and greater regulation of shipping’s greenhouse gas emissions. Especially with the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), tools are needed to assist engineers in selecting the best solutions to meet evolving requirements for reducing fuel consumption and associated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. To that end, a concept design tool, the Ship Impact Model (SIM), for quickly calculating the technical performance of a ship with different CO2 reducing technologies at an early design stage has been developed. The basis for this model is the calculation of changes from a known baseline ship and the consideration of profitability as the main incentive for ship owners or operators to invest in technologies that reduce CO2 emissions. The model and its interface with different technologies (including different energy sources) is flexible to different technology options; having been developed alongside technology reviews and design studies carried out by the partners in two different projects, “Low Carbon Shipping - A Systems Approach” majority funded by the RCUK energy programme and “Energy Technology Institute Heavy Duty Vehicle Efficiency - Marine” led by Rolls-Royce.

    5.8 HURRICANE & TROPICAL STORM SECTION 5.8 HURRICANE AND TROPICAL STORM 5.8.1 HAZARD DESCRIPTION A tropical cyclone is a rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or sub-tropical waters and has a closed low-level circulation. Tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes are all considered tropical cyclones. These storms rotate counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere around the center and are accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds (NOAA, 2013). Almost all tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic basin (which includes the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea) form between June 1 and November 30 (hurricane season). August and September are peak months for hurricane development. The average wind speeds for tropical storms and hurricanes are listed below: . A tropical depression has a maximum sustained wind speeds of 38 miles per hour (mph) or less . A tropical storm has maximum sustained wind speeds of 39 to 73 mph . A hurricane has maximum sustained wind speeds of 74 mph or higher. In the western North Pacific, hurricanes are called typhoons; similar storms in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean are called cyclones. A major hurricane has maximum sustained wind speeds of 111 mph or higher (NOAA, 2013). Over a two-year period, the United States coastline is struck by an average of three hurricanes, one of which is classified as a major hurricane. Hurricanes, tropical storms, and tropical depressions may pose a threat to life and property. These storms bring heavy rain, storm surge and flooding (NOAA, 2013). The cooler waters off the coast of New Jersey can serve to diminish the energy of storms that have traveled up the eastern seaboard.
