A coral-based archipelago, it is composed of more than 700 islands, 2,000 cays (pronounced “keys,” from the Spanish word for small islands), and hundreds of rocky outcroppings that have damaged the hulls of countless ships since colonial days. The Commonwealth of The Bahamas came into being in 1973 after centuries of colonial rule. After Great Britain granted The Bahamas internal self-rule in 1964, the fledgling nation adopted its own constitution but chose not to sever its ties with its motherland. It has remained in the Commonwealth, with the British monarch as its head of state. In the British tradition, The Bahamas has a two-house Parliament, a ministerial cabinet headed by a prime minister, and an independent judiciary. The queen appoints a Bahamian governor-general to represent the Crown. As The Bahamas moves deeper into the millennium, the government and various investors continue to pump money into the tourism infrastructure, especially on Par- adise Island, across from Nassau, as well as Cable Beach adjoining Nassau. Cruise-ship tourism continues to increase, and a more upscale crowd is coming back after aban- doning The Bahamas for many years in favor of other Caribbean islands such as St. Barts and Anguilla. When Hubert Ingraham became prime minister in 1992, he launched the country down the long road toward regaining its market share of tourism, which under Prime Minister Lynden Pindling had seen a rapid decline.

    Paradise of Plenty Exuma has so much to offer onefish “Slick” has knobby, weathered feet, heavily calloused from years of Bwading the shallow waters of the Exumas. He goes barefoot when stalking bonefish, one of the most prized game fish in the world, and our target this day as my fiancée Lori, Slick and myself crept quietly through the shin-deep water of Pipe Cay, casting to the lightning-fast fish. The hard sandy bottom was a perfect ivory, the water as clear as a pane of glass. Pipe Cay is one of dozens of idyllic islands in the central Exuma chain, arguably the crown jewel of The Bahamas, especially for boaters. Starting just 35 miles southeast of the capital, Nassau, and stretching lazily for 130 over turquoise and powder blue waters, the thin band of shoals defines a sharp border between the Exuma Bank to the west and the mile-deep water to the east. Largely protected from rough water on its westward side, the string of islands is an explorers paradise, with scores of uninhabited islands, deserted beaches and unique features including swimming pigs not found elsewhere in The Bahamas or Caribbean. The isles of the Exumas are among the Out Islands of The Bahamas, which sit just over an hour’s flight from southeast Florida. Unlike more developed urban cities like Freeport or Nassau, the Out Islands are thinly settled, largely attributable to their remoteness which in days of old made them accessible only by mailboat. Today, there are numerous direct flights from Ft. Lauderdale and Nassau.

US Highway 1, suite 202 Jupiter, FL 33477 and Lee Stocking Island Exuma Cays, The Bahamas June 2009 Executive summary The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is the flagship National Park of the Bahamas. It is the oldest park in the country at 50 years and one of the largest. In 1986 the park was declared a no-take marine reserve and in 2006 the first management plan was developed for the park. Despite its long history, there have been no comprehensive studies of the park’s effect on marine resources and human communities and there has been little evaluation of park governance. In this study we designed and implemented a monitoring program following established guidelines to periodically evaluate park success and allow for adaptive management when necessary to address critical needs. Ecological evaluations centered around visual surveys of fish and benthic communities at baseline sites established in 2003 and surveyed again as part of this study in 2007. Few changes were observed over this time period, however several positive and negative changes were detected. Benthic communities showed the least change, however, there were some increases in coral coverage in forereef habitats over the 4 year period. This suggests that processes responsible for reef resilience are functioning at some level within the park. Changes to algal communities occurred in other habitats, but their overall effect on benthic community structure was relatively minor. In seagrass beds, some seagrass coverage was lost, but this may be due to natural disturbances or seasonal variability.

    Bahamas The Exumas The name of the chain has its origins in Amerindian words “Yumey” and “Suma.” After the Revolutionary War, many of those loyal to England’s king fled to these islands and tried to establish cotton plantations. The Cotton House in William’s Town recalls this era. Salt farming was another prominent industry and in some areas, salt pans are still visible. Highbourne Cay Highbourne Cay is known world-wide as the gateway to the ultimate islands – The Exuma Cays. Uniquely, the privately owned island welcomes yachtsmen and guests to its first-class marina and luxury cottages. Due to tremendous popularity, reservations for both are strongly recommended. Highbourne’s eight beaches – deserted pieces of paradise, all within walking distance of the Marina – are among the best-kept secrets in The Bahamas! Shroud Cay, an uninhabited cay owned by Exuma Park, is an archipelago of cays Shroud Cay and rocks surrounding a shallow tidal mangrove salina which serves as a unique nursery for conch, crawfish (lobster), sea turtles, birds and many varieties of fish. Staniel Cay Staniel Cay is located in the middle of the Exuma chain of islands, about 60 miles southeast of Nassau. The Central Exumas is the most beautiful area of The Bahamas, with pristine white sandy beaches, and multi hued turquoise blue- green crystal clear waters that defy description. Here you can enjoy boating, fishing, snorkeling, beachcombing, exploring nearby caves and uninhabited islands, or enjoy a memorable swim with the pigs at Big Major’s Spot. Allan’s Cay World famous for its indigenous population of Rock Iguanas, Allen's Cay is a must for all ages! Allans Cay is a Bahamian National Park administered by the National Trust.
