El trabajo comprende aislamiento bioguiado y caracterización de metabolitos secundarios presentes en las inflorescencias de P. subtomentosum y la parte aérea de P. septuplinervium, caracterización química de 3 aceites esenciales de las mismas especies, modificaciones estructurales de algunos de los flavonoides naturales obtenidos, síntesis de chalconas y evaluación de la actividad insecticida sobre S. frugiperda de los extractos, aceites esenciales, compuestos aislados, y los compuestos obtenidos por síntesis y semisíntesis. El estudio fitoquímico bioguiado desarrollado en las dos especies vegetales condujo al aislamiento y caracterización de 9 metabolitos secundarios, de los cuales el ácido protocatéquico C8 (17,16 ppm) y el flavonol galangina C2 (13,63 ppm) fueron los metabolitos más activos contra la larvas de S. frugiperda. Debido al reconocido papel de los flavonoides en la relaciones planta-insecto, y a que fueron los metabolitos aislados en mayor cantidad en este trabajo, se evaluó la actividad antialimentaria de una serie de compuestos de tipo flavonoide: flavonoides aislados de diferentes especies vegetales, flavonoides modificados estructuralmente (dos de ellos sin previos reportes en la literatura), y flavonoides obtenidos por síntesis (dos de ellos sin previos reportes en la literatura) estableciendo relaciones estructura-actividad. El estudio de los aceites esenciales de las especies vegetales estudiadas, mostró que el contenido de monoterpenos de los aceites de inflorescencias de P. subtomentosum (44%) y parte aérea de P. septuplinervium (77%) es el responsable de la toxicidad fumigante que presentan dichos aceites esenciales (13,2 µL/L de aire y 9,41 µL/L de aire respectivamente). Se determinó que los monoterpenos canfeno, α y β-pineno, y limoneno, son algunos de los metabolitos responsables de la actividad fumigante, siendo el canfeno el que posee la mayor actividad con CL50 < 0,57 µg/L de aire. Abstract The present research combines phytochemical studies and insecticidal activity on polyphagous pest, with the aim of contributing to the search of potentially useful natural products in the agricultural sector. The work consists of isolation and characterization of the secondary metabolites present in the inflorescences of Piper subtomentosum and the aerial part of Piper septuplinervium, chemical characterization of three essential oils of the same species, structural modifications of some natural flavonoids, chalcone synthesis and insecticidal activity evaluation on S. frugiperda of the extracts, essential oils, isolated compounds, and the compounds obtained by synthesis and semisynthesis. The bioassay-guided phytochemical study of the two species leads to the isolation and characterization of 9 secondary metabolites, of which protocatechuic acid C8 (17.16 ppm) and flavonol galangina C2 (13.63 ppm) were the most active metabolites against S. frugiperda. Due to the recognized role of flavonoids in plant-insect relationships and for being the metabolites isolated in greater amounts in this work, the antifeedant activity of flavonoids type compounds was evaluated establishing structure-activity relationships. The compounds evaluated were: flavonoids isolated from different plant species, structurally modified flavonoids (two of them with no previous reports in the literature), and flavonoids obtained by synthesis (two of them with no previous reports in the literature). The study of essential oils showed that the content of monoterpenes in inflorescences of P. subtomentosum (44%) and aerial part of P. septuplinervium (77%) oils is responsible for the fumigant toxicity of essential oils (13,2 µL/L of air and 9,41 µL/L of air respectively). the monoterpenes camphene, α and β-pinene and limonene, are some of the metabolites responsible for the fumigant activity. The essential oil of black pepper fruits has shown a myriad of biological activities and is a commercially important commodity. In this work, five black pepper essential oils from eastern coastal region of Madagascar and six black pepper essential oils from the Amazon region of Brazil were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major components of the essential oils were α-pinene, sabinene, β-pinene, δ-3-carene, limonene, and β-caryophyllene. A comparison of the Madagascar and Brazilian essential oils with black pepper essential oils from various geographical regions reported in the literature was carried out. A hierarchical cluster analysis using the data obtained in this study and those reported in the literature revealed four clearly defined clusters based on the relative concentrations of the major components.

Se ha extraído mediante hidrodestilación el aceite esencial de diez especies usadas como pimienta: Piper borbonense, P. capense, P. retrofractum, P. nigrum, Zanthoxylum bungeanum y Z. armatum, Lindera neesiana, Ruta chalepensis, Schinus terebenthifolia, Pimenta dioica. Los análisis realizados mediante cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas encontraron que todas presentan β-felandreno y derivados de cariofileno y felandreno, siendo estos compuestos de propiedades pungentes los característicos de la especia pimienta. El rendimiento de esencia varía desde 0,43% para R. chalepensis hasta 7,61% para P. borbonense. Los compuestos mayoritarios fueron: P. borbonense (α-felandreno, 12,43%), P. capense (δ-cadineno, 25,59%,), P. retrofractum (γ-cadineno, 31,63%), P. nigrum ((E)-β-cariofileno, 22,88%), P. dioica (eugenol, 48,93%), L. neesiana (miristicina, 14,13%), R. chalepensis (2-undecanona, 64,93%), S. therebenthifolia (δ-3-careno, 29,21%), Z. armatum (linalool, 53,30%); Z. bungeanum (linalool, 64,09%). Todo esto muestra las diferencias en el metabolismo secundario de las pimientas y por tanto sus posibles aplicaciones en diferentes industrias. Using household information from different socio-economic societies, knowledge based NTFP socioeconomics population, as well as abundance and usefulness of the resources were obtained through the use of ethnobotanical survey on use of NTFP in 82 rural communities within seven counties in Liberia. 1,165 survey participants, with 114 plant species listed as valuable NTFP. The socioeconomic characteristics of 255 local community people provided collection practice information on NTFP, impact and threats due to collection, and their income generation.

    Melliferous plants for Cameroon Highlands and Adamaoua Plateau honey April 2011 i Melliferous plants for Cameroon Highlands and Adamaoua Plateau honey A melliferous flower is a plant which produces substances that can be collected by insects and turned into honey. Many plants are melliferous, but only certain plants have pollen and nectar that can be harvested by honey bees (Apis mellifera adansonii in Cameroon). This is because of the bee’s physiognomy (their body size and shape, length of proboscis, etc.) A plant is classified as melliferous if it can be harvested by domesticated honey bees. This is a symbiotic relationship (both organisms benefit), with bees collecting nectar, and pollen for food, and useful plant substances to make propolis to fill gaps in the hive. The information presented covers the flowering period, the resources harvested by bees (Nectar, pollen, propolis, and honeydew). It is worth noting that each plant does not produce the same quantity or quality of these resources, and even among species production varies due to location, altitude, plant health and climate. ABSTRACT The ethnomedical uses of Piper (胡椒 Hú Jiāo) plants as anticancer agents, in vitro cytotoxic activity of both extracts and compounds from Piper plants, and in vivo antitumor activity and mechanism of action of selected compounds are reviewed in the present paper. The genus Piper (Piperaceae) contains approximately 2000 species, of which 10 species have been used in traditional medicines to treat cancer or cancer‑like symptoms. Studies have shown that 35 extracts from 24 Piper species and 32 compounds from Piper plants possess cytotoxic activity. Amide alkaloids account for 53% of the major active principles. Among them, piplartine (piperlongumine) shows the most promise, being toxic to dozens of cancer cell lines and having excellent in vivo activity. It is worthwhile to conduct further anticancer studies both in vitro and in vivo on Piper plants and their active principles.

Vernacular names are not always reliable from a botanical point of view, for the same name is sometimes used for different plants in different districts, while, on the other hand, many plants bear several designations, e.g. Sutherlandia frutescens, for which we give ten, but there may be more. This is, however, nothing in comparison with European conditions. InHegi's Flora of Middle Europe one finds for the common Meadow saffron {Colchicum autumnale) 149 names enumerated for that area. In spite of some uncertainty the common names, if judicious- ly employed and accepted with a little care, are useful and handy—they certainly help to disseminate knowledge and love of plants among the people, and that alone would justify their preservation.
