    Iwmf African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative

    IMPACT RE PORT IWMF AFRICAN GREAT LAKES REPORTING INITIATIVE Five years ago, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) received an opportunity that shifted the course of the organization. With a deep commitment to gender equality and the power of the media, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation awarded the IWMF a transformative $5 million grant to change the narrative in Africa’s Great Lakes region. The IWMF began work across the continent decades ago, but never at this scale. We are still humbled by this show of faith in our team, our efforts and our mission. What began in 2012 as a pilot project to bring journalists to Western Sahara grew into a five-year, six-country initiative taking us to Eastern Congo in 2014 and then to Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, North Kivu and other regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the following years of the program. This initiative took place against an incredible backdrop of world events that our program’s fellows lived through and reported on every day. Despite wars, insurgencies, rigged elections, expired mandates, famines, a refugee crisis, pandemics and economic collapses, the 2 IMPACT REPORT IWMF AFRICAN GREAT LAKES REPORTING INITIATIVE IWMF continued its work, empowering touching the lives of 130 local and 178 fellows’ reporting, that number is closer journalists with the skills and network to international journalists whose reporting to 36 percent. But this book shows that the dictionary is not as ‘British’ as we all thought. The linguist and lexicographer, Sarah Ogilvie, combines her insider knowledge and experience with impeccable research to show that the OED is in fact an international product in both its content and its making. She examines the policies and practices of the various editors, applies qualitative and quantitative analysis, and finds new OED archival materials in the form of letters, reports, and proofs. Même si les personnages et les situations qu’ont conformé « l’Ethnie Blanche » pendant le temps ont été très variés, il existe des caractéristiques qui se répètent, des continuités associées avec l’ambiguïté du statut social, des relations entre les sexes ou les spécialisations économiques, à la frontière entre le local et le global. L’article explore cette durabilité d’une frontière culturelle, en proposant des pistes de recherche à partir de la figure des lançados. L’analyse montre des indices, des parallélismes réitérés entre les effets des varia- tions dans les conditions frontalières sur le collectif « Blanc », en oscillant entre le maintien de son identité et l’intégration dans les communautés autochtones. L’auteur estime qu’une perspective de longue durée aiderait à comprendre l’articulation actuelle des contingents de coopérants et d’agents économiques qui arrivent à la région, compréhension qui pourrait être extrapolée à d’autres zones du continent.     UN CONVENTION AGAINST CORRUPTION CIVIL SOCIETY REVIEW: PERU 2011 Context and purpose The UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) was adopted in 2003 and entered into force in December 2005. It is the first legally binding anti-corruption agreement applicable on a global basis. To date, 154 states have become parties to the convention. States have committed to implement a wide and detailed range of anti-corruption measures that affect their laws, institutions and practices. These measures promote prevention, criminalisation and law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, technical assistance and information exchange. Concurrent with UNCAC’s entry into force in 2005, a Conference of the States Parties to the Convention (CoSP) was established to review and facilitate required activities. In November 2009 the CoSP agreed on a review mechanism that was to be “transparent, efficient, non-intrusive, inclusive and impartial”. It also agreed to two five-year review cycles, with the first on chapters III (Criminalisation and Law Enforcement) and IV (International Co-operation), and the second cycle on chapters II (Preventive Measures) and V (Asset Recovery). The mechanism included an Implementation Review Group (IRG), which met for the first time in June–July 2010 in Vienna and selected the order of countries to be reviewed in the first five-year cycle, including the 26 countries (originally 30) in the first year of review.     Communiqué from the Urban 20 (U20) October 2, 2020, Riyadh We, the Mayors of the undersigned cities, underscoring the interconnectedness of the world and our shared future, have gathered as the Urban 20 (U20) to call on the G20 Leaders to commit to our partnership in achieving equitable, carbon-neutral, inclusive and healthy societies. Under the U20 Riyadh’s chairmanship, U20 cities built on the strong foundation of the U20 Buenos Aires and Tokyo legacies to issue this Communiqué linking to the G20 priorities under the Saudi presidency, and with contributions from evidence-based task forces and a special working group on COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing social and economic crisis make this call even more urgent as cities and metropolitan areas, that lie at the heart of the G20’s vitality, are the epicenter of the crisis. Mayors, the principal champions of our communities’ aspirations, are on the frontline to deliver on COVID-19 recovery action plans across the G20, backed by scientific knowledge, inclusively building on technological and digital breakthroughs, while acknowledging humanity’s cultural and ethnic diversity. The recovery should not be a return to business as usual. Instead, investments must improve the welfare and resilience of our cities and communities, by addressing solidarity, re-investing in public health, and mitigating future threats, like the climate crisis. Climate action and biodiversity preservation can help accelerate economic recovery and enhance equity through new technologies and the creation of green jobs. These efforts will also drive wider benefits for people and businesses. Now is the time to devise visionary multilateral solutions and strengthen policy-making that fosters inclusive, sustainable, resilient and smart urbanization, protects the rights of citizens and the foundations of local democracy, in support of prosperity and well-being framed by key global agreements.

    2010 Press release 31 August 2010 Ministry for Foreign Affairs Music and fashion to put Sweden on the map - Government earmarks SEK 1 million for promotion initiatives Swedish music, fashion and digital games are a few industries that can promote the image of Sweden abroad. They are three creative industries that have a good reputation beyond our borders, and there is a great deal of interest in them. This is why the Government is now investing even more in the experience industry, especially since we have seen that activities previously conducted abroad have generated a lot of interest and received a positive response. These investments have helped to attract more tourists to Sweden and created an interest among foreign entrepreneurs in business opportunities. Our talented songwriters, designers and others involved in the experience industry abroad have helped to put Sweden on the world map. For a small country, Sweden has a strong position as an exporter of music - we are ranked fifth after other countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. The music business is an important part of the Swedish experience industry, which is an expanding export industry and a major growth sector. In 2009, the experience industry accounted for over 5 per cent of Sweden's GDP, and it employs 280 000 people. "We have seen that the experience industry is very important for people's image of Sweden abroad. When I'm out travelling, I often hear how people associate Sweden with Abba, Max Martin, Robyn, DICE and Odd Molly. This is why it's really important that we promote this sector, so that we can become even stronger and more talked about beyond our borders," says Minister for Trade Ewa Björling, who is responsible for promoting the image of Sweden.
