Tucci Kissileff Laboratory for the Study of Human Ingestive Behaviour, School of Psychology, University of Liverpool, Eleanor Rathbone Building, Bedford Street South, Liverpool L69 7ZA, UK; E-Mail: [email protected]; Tel.: +44-151-794-1121; Fax: +44-151-794-2945 Received: 9 December 2009; in revised form: 10 March 2010 / Accepted: 19 March 2010 / Published: 22 March 2010 Abstract: Since obesity has grown to epidemic proportions, its effective management is a very important clinical issue. Despite the great amount of scientific effort that has been put into understanding the mechanisms that lead to overconsumption and overweight, at the moment very few approaches to weight management are effective in the long term. On the other hand, modern society is also affected by the growing incidence of eating disorders on the other side of the spectrum such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa which are equally difficult to treat. This review will try to summarise the main findings available in the literature regarding the effect of plants or plant extracts (phytochemicals) on human appetite and body weight. The majority of plant extracts are not single compounds but rather a mixture of different molecules, therefore their mechanism of action usually targets several systems. In addition, since some cellular receptors tend to be widely distributed, sometimes a single molecule can have a widespread effect. This review will attempt to describe the main phytochemicals that have been suggested to affect the homeostatic mechanisms that influence intake and body weight.

  • Effects of Combined THC and Heroin Vapor Inhalation
Psychopharmacology https://doi.org/10.1007/s00213-021-05904-w ORIGINAL INVESTIGATION Efects of combined THC and heroin vapor inhalation in rats Arnold Gutierrez1,2 · Jacques D. Nguyen1,2 · Kevin M. Creehan1,2 · Mehrak Javadi‑Paydar1 · Yanabel Grant1,2 · Michael A. Tafe1,2 Received: 27 April 2021 / Accepted: 27 May 2021 © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2021 Abstract Rationale Opioids are efective medications, but they have several key limitations including the development of tolerance, establishment of dependence, diversion for non-medical use, and the development of addiction. Therefore, any drugs which act in an additive or synergistic fashion with opioids to address medical applications have the potential to reduce opioid- related harms. Objectives To determine if heroin and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) interact in an additive or independent manner to alter nociception, body temperature, and spontaneous locomotor activity when inhaled or injected. Methods Groups of female and male rats, implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters, were exposed to vapor generated from heroin (50 mg/mL in propylene glycol vehicle; PG), THC (50 mg/mL), or the combination for assessment of efects on temperature and activity. Thermal nociception was assessed with a warm water tail-withdrawal assay. Results Heroin inhalation increased temperature and activity whereas THC inhalation decreased temperature and activity in both female and male Sprague–Dawley rats. Efects of combined inhalation were in opposition, and additional experiments found the same outcome for the injection of heroin (0.5 mg/kg, s.c.) and THC (10 mg/kg, i.p.) alone and in combination.

  • Cannabis As Spiritual Narcotic in Early Chinese Medicine & Taoism
The Way of Great Hemp: Cannabis as Spirit... by kevin - http://ancientway.com/blog/?p=1853 The Way of Great Hemp: Cannabis as Spiritual Narcotic in Early Chinese Medicine & Taoism The Hemp Lady and Her Deer, colored by AncientWayKevin page 1 / 38 The Way of Great Hemp: Cannabis as Spirit... by kevin - http://ancientway.com/blog/?p=1853 The Hemp Lady, Daoist Cannabis Goddess The Hemp Lady [Magu] was the younger sister of the immortal Wang Fangping. Under Emperor Huan of the Han dynasty, Wang descended from heaven to visit the family of Cai Jing. He told him: ”You have the ability to go beyond the world. This is why I have come today to teach you. However, your energy is low and your flesh is strong. Therefore you cannot ascend bodily into heaven, but rather have to prepare yourself for deliverance from the corpse.” Wang duly gave him essential instructions and left again. Later Jing developed a fever that seemed to burn his entire body. After three days his flesh began to dissolve so that his bones were sticking out. Lying down in his bedroom, he covered himself with a blanket, when he vanished all of a sudden. His relatives looked in and found only a shell under the blanket, somewhat like the skin of a cicada. Over ten years later he unexpectedly returned to his family. He told them: ”On the seventh day of the seventh month, Lord Wang will grace our house with his presence. We should prepare several hundred pitchers of wine to feast him.” On the appointed day Wang indeed arrived, floating down from heaven.

  • Doumu: the Mother of the Dipper
Livia Kohn DOUMU: THE MOTHER OF THE DIPPER Introduction The goddess Doumu 4- f.J:, the Mother of the Dipper, is a Daoist stellar deity of high popularity. Shrines to her are found today in many major Daoist sanctuaries, from the Qingyang gong. jf.i;inChengduA lllthrough Louguan tttfL plearXi'an iN~)to Mount Tai * t1Jin Shandong. She represents the genninal, creative power behind one of the most central Daoist constellations, the Northern Dipper, roler offates and central orderer of the universe, which is said to consist of seven or nine stars, called the Seven Primes or the Nine Perfected. 1 The Mother of the Dipper appears in Daoist literature from Yuan times onward, there is no trace of any scripture or material associated with her in Song sources or libraries. 2 Her major scripture, the Doumu jing4- f.J: ~I (translated below), survives in both the Daoist canon of 1445 and in a Ming dynasty manuscript dated to 1439. The goddess can be seen as part of a general tendency among Daoists of the Ming to include more popular and female deities into their pantheon, which in turn is related to the greater emphasis on goddesses in popular religion and Buddhism at the time. 3 In I Edward Schafer calls them the Nine Quintessences (1977, p. 233). 2 Van der Loon (1984) has no entry on any te;-.."t regarding her worship. 3 A prominent example of a popular goddess at the time is Mazu ~ 111 or Tianfei f:. 9(.. who was also adopted into the Daoist pantheon. On her development, see Wädow 1992: on her Daoist adoption, see Bohz 1986.

  • Magu (Deity) - Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
מגו ماغو Μάγου Magu (deity) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magu_(deity) Magu (deity) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Magu (Chinese: 麻姑 ; pinyin: Mágū ; Wade–Giles: Ma-ku ; literally: "Hemp Maiden") is a legendary Taoist xian ( 仙 "immortal; transcendent") associated with the elixir of life, and a symbolic protector of females in Chinese mythology. Stories in Chinese literature describe Magu as a beautiful young woman with long birdlike fingernails, while early myths associate her with caves. Magu xian shou ( 麻姑獻壽 "Magu gives her birthday greetings") is a popular motif in Chinese art. Ma (the modern Chinese character 麻, which derives from a Zhou Dynasty bronze script ideograph, shows 林 "plants" drying in a 广 "shed; shack") originally meant "hemp, Cannabis sativa ". Cannabis has been continuously cultivated in China since Neolithic times (Li 1974:437); for example, hemp cords were used to create the characteristic line designs on Yangshao culture pottery and the fibres were used to produce cloth prior to the introduction of cotton. Ma has extended meanings of "numbed; tingling" (e.g., mazui 麻醉 "anesthetic; narcotic"), "pockmarked; pitted" ( mazi 麻子 "hemp seed; pockmark"), "sesame" ( zhima 芝麻 ), and an uncommon Chinese surname. The ancient bronze script for ma 麻 "cannabis" depicted plants hanging in Gu ( 姑, combining the 女 "woman" radical and a gu 古 "old" phonetic) a shed.
