Creating Chinese ink paintings usually requires great skill, concentration, and years of training. This paper presents a novel real-time, automatic framework to convert images into Chinese ink painting style. Given an input image, we first construct its saliency map which captures the visual contents in perceptually salient regions. Next, the image is abstracted and its salient edges are calculated with the help of the saliency map. Then, the abstracted image is diffused by a non-physical ink diffusion process. -

I believed her then and since, I have enjoyed pursuing that goal. She taught me the basics of seeing lines in nature; lines formed on the contact of shadow and light, as well as organic shapes. We also practiced blind contour drawing1. I took this exercise very seriously then, and I have reflected upon these moments of observation as I write this paper. -
Identification of the Proto-Inkstone by Organic Residue Analysis: a Case Study from the Changle Cemetery in China

Herit Sci (2018) 6:19 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40494-018-0184-3 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Identifcation of the proto‑inkstone by organic residue analysis: a case study from the Changle Cemetery in China Meng Ren1,2, Renfang Wang3 and Yimin Yang2* Abstract The inkstone is a specifc writing implement in China that was popularized since the Han Dynasty (202 BC–AD 220). A rectangular/round grinding plate accompanied with a grinding stone is considered as a kind of proto-inkstone. How- ever, little scientifc investigation has been performed to support this hypothesis. In this paper, a micro-destructive approach, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS), were employed to analyse the black residues on a grinding plate and a grinding stone excavated from the Changle Cemetery (202 BC–AD 8) in northwestern China. The FTIR and Raman analyses indicated that the residues were ancient ink. GC–MS analysis further identifed that the residues were pine- soot ink, based on the relative abundances of the main polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as the detection of conifer biomarkers. The trace of animal glue was not detected in the residues; thus, the ink was possibly formed as small pellets and the small grinding stone was necessary to assist during the ink-grinding process. This study confrms that this set of stone implements is indeed an early type of inkstone, and ofers some insight into the co-evolution relationship between ink production and inkstone shapes. Despite the great amount of scientific effort that has been put into understanding the mechanisms that lead to overconsumption and overweight, at the moment very few approaches to weight management are effective in the long term. On the other hand, modern society is also affected by the growing incidence of eating disorders on the other side of the spectrum such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa which are equally difficult to treat. This review will try to summarise the main findings available in the literature regarding the effect of plants or plant extracts (phytochemicals) on human appetite and body weight. The majority of plant extracts are not single compounds but rather a mixture of different molecules, therefore their mechanism of action usually targets several systems. In addition, since some cellular receptors tend to be widely distributed, sometimes a single molecule can have a widespread effect. This review will attempt to describe the main phytochemicals that have been suggested to affect the homeostatic mechanisms that influence intake and body weight. -

Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh.
