The services offered by the East Asian Resource and Education Program are available to educators, businesses, community organizations and the general public on a national basis. In addition to the services and facilities outlined in is catalogue, the East Asian Resource and Education Program at Yale offers a variety of programs and events designed to enhance the appreciation and understanding of East Asia. I1 , , 77" '7 PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES FOR TEACHERS The professional staff of the East Asian Resource and Education Program at Yale will conduct on-site professional development programs for teachers of grades K-12.Professional development programs are available on a wide range of topics and can be designed to meet the needs of the staff for which the program is being planned. The professional development programs of the East Asian Resource and Education Program are conducted within the guidelines of and meet the requirements of the State of Connecticut Department of Education. The East Asian Resource and Education Program has presented programs throughout Connecticut, New England, and across the U.S. Among the professional development workshop programs the E.A.R.E.P. has presented are: Internationalizing the Secondary Curriculum Global Perspectives in the Elementary School Curriculum Central Themes and Key Resources for the Teaching of East Asia Chinese and Japanese Art - Content and Resources Teaching about China: themes and resources (elementary or secondary) Teaching about Japan: themes and resources (elementary or secondary) Teaching about Korea: themes and resources (elementary or secondary) The Geography of East Asia Chinese and Japanese Literature in the Classroom Chinese Folk Art and Folklore For information on arranging a professional development workshop program in your school or district, please call our office at (203) 432-3429. '1MMER _INSTITUTE IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES Ear -r the Resource and Education Program offers an intensive institute on a topic in East Asian Studies. fie instuu.. designed for teachers who teach at the secondary or community college level who wish to pursue the study of East Asia beyond what is possible at one or two-day professional development workshops. The institute is usually a two-week program conducted by Yale faculty, visiting fac.aity from other institutions, and the professional staff of the East Asian Resource and Education Program at Yale.C.E.U.'s or C.E.U. equivalents are awarded to successful participants of each institute. In the past, the East Asian Studies Summer institute has been offered through the Connecticut State Department of Education's institutes for Teaching and Learning (I.T.L.) which has paid all costs for Connecticut teachers and has awarded C.E.U.'s directly to the participants.Out-of-state teachers are welcome to apply for and to, upon acceptance, attend the summer institutes. On and off-campus accommodations are available to all participants. information and application materials for each summer's institute are available in February. Creating Chinese ink paintings usually requires great skill, concentration, and years of training. This paper presents a novel real-time, automatic framework to convert images into Chinese ink painting style. Given an input image, we first construct its saliency map which captures the visual contents in perceptually salient regions. Next, the image is abstracted and its salient edges are calculated with the help of the saliency map. Then, the abstracted image is diffused by a non-physical ink diffusion process.

(Relatively) uninterrupted days dedicated to research, special training programs, travel, writing, renewal? At the mid-point of the semester, those days seem like distant memories. Nevertheless, let me take a moment to celebrate with you once again the happy news we received in July when EASC, with our consortium partner University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign’s Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (EAPS), received Title VI funding to become one of 17 U.S. National Resource Centers for the study of East Asia. As a member of this impressive nationwide group, our consortium brings together 140 faculty specialists in East Asia, making us a Midwest powerhouse. In addition to supporting outreach activities and cross-campus teaching, our joint projects include language pedagogy workshops; national dissertation workshops on East Asian ethnology, education, sexuality and gender, and culture and society; and summer seminars on transnational and cross-regional cinemas, varieties of capitalism, culture and cognition, and Daoism and folk beliefs in Chinese religion. We are now in the planning stages of a special consortium initiative, Science and Technology in the Pacific Century (STIP), which will bring together East Asian and U.S. scholars, students, and policy makers to consider the impact of science and technology on business and society on both sides of the Pacific. To date, our colloquium series has brought Professor Ted Bestor (Harvard University) to talk about “Global Sushi” and Professor Julia Andrews (Ohio State University) to discuss “Ink Painting in the Art World of Contemporary China.” The Unforgiven, by first-time film director and writer YOON Jong-bin, kicked off this semester’s film series.

Herit Sci (2018) 6:19 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40494-018-0184-3 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Identifcation of the proto‑inkstone by organic residue analysis: a case study from the Changle Cemetery in China Meng Ren1,2, Renfang Wang3 and Yimin Yang2* Abstract The inkstone is a specifc writing implement in China that was popularized since the Han Dynasty (202 BC–AD 220). A rectangular/round grinding plate accompanied with a grinding stone is considered as a kind of proto-inkstone. How- ever, little scientifc investigation has been performed to support this hypothesis. In this paper, a micro-destructive approach, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS), were employed to analyse the black residues on a grinding plate and a grinding stone excavated from the Changle Cemetery (202 BC–AD 8) in northwestern China. The FTIR and Raman analyses indicated that the residues were ancient ink. GC–MS analysis further identifed that the residues were pine- soot ink, based on the relative abundances of the main polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as the detection of conifer biomarkers. The trace of animal glue was not detected in the residues; thus, the ink was possibly formed as small pellets and the small grinding stone was necessary to assist during the ink-grinding process. This study confrms that this set of stone implements is indeed an early type of inkstone, and ofers some insight into the co-evolution relationship between ink production and inkstone shapes. Blaeser My dissertation is a creative translation from Japanese into English of the poetry of Yosa Buson, an 18th century (1716 – 1783) poet. Buson is considered to be one of the most important of the Edo Era poets and is still influential in modern Japanese literature. By taking account of Japanese culture, identity and aesthetics the dissertation project bridges the gap between American and Japanese poetics, while at the same time revealing the complexity of thought in Buson's poetry and bringing the target audience closer to the text of a powerful and mov- ing writer.
