NOTES ON JEFFREY HUNTER AND HIS FILMS by Jim Meyer "Jeffrey Hunter is beautiful!" a girl friend gurgled to me some 15 years ago. And indeed he was, as any man not envious of Hunter's impressive 6' 1" height and blue-eyed, brown-haired handsomeness must admit. As is well enough known, many film actors have little more to offer audiences than handsomeness. But far too many critics (men and women alike) too quickly tabbed the exceptionally hand- some actor "beautiful but bland." But teen-age girls didn't mind. Many didn't care whether he could act. In Jeffrey Hunter they saw (or thought they saw) a dream prince, a husky young god, who could fulfill their most imaginative fantasies. Less dazzled male viewers saw something else: a man who was handsome enough for them to resent, largely, one suspects, because many of them wished that his good looks belonged to them, and, not being able to measure up, consoled themselves by insisting that he couldn't act and wouldn't last long in films. Obviously, Hunter had to work twice as hard as many another actor of his type to prove he was a good actor. I believe he succeeded although he never became a superstar. Did Hunter's good looks make him arrogant, overbearing, and hard to work with? Possibly not, when one recalls that Jean Peters, a co-star of his, once went out of her way to observe that his courtesy toward and consideration for her would be remarkable anywhere but especially in Hollywood.

Geraghty, C. Paris, Hollywood and Kay Kendall. In Moseley., R. (Eds) Fashioning Film Stars : Dress, Culture, Identity., Chap 10, pages pp. 121-133. BFI (2005) http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/3370/ Glasgow ePrints Service http://eprints.gla.ac.uk PARIS, HOLLYWOOD AND KAY KENDALL Christine Geraghty, University of Glasgow The Constant Husband (GB, Gilliat, 1955) was in many ways a watershed film for the British star, Kay Kendall. Filming took place in the spring and early summer of 1954, when Genevieve (GB, Cornelius, 1953) and Doctor in the House (GB, Thomas,1954), hugely popular British comedies, had already brought her to the attention of the public and the critics. Although there had been problems before over suitable parts for her, it was the last film she made before the very public falling out with Rank Organisation in December 1954 when she was suspended from her contract for turning down a number of proffered parts, including the second Doctor film (Daily Herald, 22 December 1954). It was also the film on which she met and fell in love with her future husband, Rex Harrison, who was already a major star. But The Constant Husband is also significant from the point of view of image and fashion, the aspects of Kay Kendall's later career which are the subject of this essay. It was in this film that elements of Kendall's individual style most clearly seem to be shaping her costumes; it is perhaps not an accident that the costume designer Anna Duse was someone who knew Kendall in her childhood and had taught her dancing (Golden, p.15).

  • Information About Salzburg´S "Stadtkino"
Information about Salzburg´s "Stadtkino" Austria´s second Todd-AO Theatre Part 1 of 2 Parts -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The very first "Stadtkino" (City Cinema) had once been housed in Salzburg´s old "Festspielhaus" (festival hall) – opening on 25.12.1948. Article above left from "Salzburger Volkszeitung" dated 27.12.1948. On the right the program of the opening film The Best Years of Our Lives (USA, 1946). The article above: "Stadtkino" (City Cinema) has opened On Christmas day, the "Stadtkino" began with its screenings in the "Festspielhaus" (festival hall). Against the improper use of the "Festspielhaus" – such as boxing competitions, perma- nent screenings of films and similar – have repeatedly been raised legitimate protest votes. People fear that the solemn hall of the glamorous Salzburg Festival would now (outside the festival season) be degraded by simple everyday events without upscale festival character. But, as we now learn, the use of the "Festspielhaus" as a "Kintopp" is only a provisional. The City of Salzburg intends to erect a new large-scale cinema, which is to be built on Franz- Joseph-Kai on the site of the former Municipal Museum (author´s note: the former Carolino- Augusteum) – the building had been destroyed by bombs. Reportedly, this urban cinema is scheduled to be completed by October 1949 (author´s note: it opened on 01.08.1950). At first, it is planned that there will take place film screenings at the "Festspielhaus" only temporarily – until the beginning of the festival rehearsals in May next year. The very first film that has opened "Stadtkino"´s provisional operation, gives hope that the program creation will have an equal `happy hand´ in future.
