itzi Gaynor, star of stage and screen, is best knownsfor her role as Ensign Nellie llilbpfepin the Rodgeb'and Hamrrierstein musical . To describe Mitzi Gaynor is to form a picture of the complete entertainer, which she has been since starting her career at the age of 12 in the corps de ballet of the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. Her vibrant personality and singing, dancing, and acting talents have since found her as a star of motion pictures, television, the theatrical stage, Las Vegas, and concerts. She was recognized by her peers when the theatrical union of entertainers voted her "Singing and Dancing Star of the Year," presented on national video by George Burns. Gaynor was virtually born into the theatre; her mother was a dancer, her father a professional musician. When the family moved from her native , she was discovered by legendary Los Angeles theatrical producer Edwin Lester, and made her debut as a dancer in Song without Words for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. While performing there, she captured the attention of film director Henry Koster and producer Sol Siegel, who signed her to a contract at 20th Century Fox, where she made her film debut in My Blue Heaven. She soon became costar to many of 's most significant stars. With the role of Nellie Forbush in the film version of South Pacific, she became one of the most popular stars in the international film community. In addition to the film's highly successful domestic run, it became one of the most popular attractions worldwide. When television beckoned, 10 musical variety specials acclaimed her among the leading stars of the medium. Receiving high critical acclaim, the New York Daily News labeled her most recent show "a superb hour that sums up what show business is all about." (Omnibus ^Eectute iSeries 2000-07
