    Chapter IV Dress and Fabrics of the Mughals- The great Mughal emperor Akbar was not only a great ruler, an administrator and a lover of art and architecture but also a true admirer and entrepreneur of different patterns and designs of clothing. The changes and development brought by him from Ottoman origin to its Indian orientation based on the land‟s culture, custom and climatic conditions. This is apparent in the use of the fabric, the length of the dresses or their ornamentation. Since very little that is truly contemporary with the period of Babur and Humayun has survived in paintings, it is not easy to determine exactly what the various dresses look like other than what has been observed by the painters themselves. But we catch a glimpse of the foreign style of these dresses even in the paintings from Akbar‟s period which make references, as in illustrations of history or chronicles of the earlier times like the Babar-Namah or the Humayun-Namah.1 With the coming of Mughals in India we find the Iranian and Central Asian fashion in their dresses and a different concept in clothing.2 (Plate no. 1) Dress items of the Mughals: Akbar paid much attention to the establishment and working of the various karkhanas. Though articles were imported from Iran, Europe and Mongolia but effort were also made to produce various stuffs indigenously. We first removed any seasonal effect, and then measured the year-over-year growth, velocity, and acceleration for each search query. Based on these metrics, we were able to classify the queries into similar trend patterns. We then curated the most significant trends to illustrate interesting shifts in behavior. In this work we explore the task of instance segmentation with attribute localization, which unifies instance segmentation (detect and segment each object instance) and fine-grained visual attribute cat- egorization (recognize one or multiple attributes). The proposed task requires both localizing an object and describing its properties. To illus- trate the various aspects of this task, we focus on the domain of fashion and introduce Fashionpedia as a step toward mapping out the visual aspects of the fashion world. Fashionpedia consists of two parts: (1) an ontology built by fashion experts containing 27 main apparel categories, 19 apparel parts, 294 fine-grained attributes and their relationships; (2) a dataset with everyday and celebrity event fashion images annotated with segmentation masks and their associated per-mask fine-grained at- tributes, built upon the Fashionpedia ontology. In order to solve this challenging task, we propose a novel Attribute-Mask R-CNN model to jointly perform instance segmentation and localized attribute recogni- tion, and provide a novel evaluation metric for the task.     WOMEN IN PANTS: A STUDY OF FEMALE COLLEGE STUDENTS ADOPTION OF BIFURCATED GARMENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA FROM 1960 TO 1974 by CANDICE NICHOLE LURKER SAULS Under the direction of Patricia Hunt-Hurst ABSTRACT This research presented new information regarding the adoption of bifurcated garments by female students at the University of Georgia from1960 to 1974. The primary objectives were to examine photographs of female students at the University of Georgia in The Pandora yearbooks as well as to review written references alluding to university female dress codes as well as regulations and guidelines. The photographs revealed that prior to 1968 women at UGA wore bifurcated garments for private activities taking place in dorms or at sorority houses away from UGA property. The study also showed an increase in frequency from 1968 to 1974 due to the abolishment of the dress code regulations. In reference to the specific bifurcated garments worn by female students, the findings indicated the dominance of long pants. This study offers a sample of the changes in women’s dress during the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s, which then showed more specifically how college women dressed in their daily lives across America. This paper applied a theory of “meme” to explain the monpe fashion trend in Korea. Based on literature review, empirical analyses were conducted by analyzing market and media including newspaper articles and blogs. We found that the monpe meme has evolved over time through variation, penetration, and diffusion. In terms of variation, the impression of monpe transitioned from a negative image to a positive one as a result of changes in design, functionality, and popular image. In terms of penetration, the monpe meme has spread into popular culture, again through mass media, with images of active, sexy, and attractive monpe-wearers on television and at popular occasions. Finally, the monpe meme has diffused throughout a broad range of consumers of various ages and both genders as an item of clothing for various occasions through diversified distribution channels. In this way, the development of monpe as fashionable clothing in Korea during the 2000s is itself a meme reflecting its evolution from a disgraceful colonial legacy to an item of contemporary fashion.

    PANTS ON WOMEN Part 3: HISTORY OF WOMEN WEARING PANTS IN OUR COUNTRY This article involves a piece of over-looked American history, namely, history of the women’s rights movement. Surprisingly to many, the issue of women wearing pants was more of a POLITICAL issue than it was a SPIRITUAL one. Our country’s European forefathers brought a type of gender system over here which originated in the Middle Ages while Europe was ruled by the Catholic Church. Laws based upon the inferiority of women were enacted in America. It was not until the Victorian Era that women became empowered to throw off the symbolism of male (sinful, abusive) authority associated with pants, as the quest for equal legal rights with men became a heated political issue. THE VICTORIAN ERA AND WOMEN By the Victorian Era the definition of “femininity” had taken on a much exaggerated meaning, and dress distinguished gender in exaggerated ways. i All Victorian women were expected to be weak and helpless, a fragile delicate flower, incapable of making decisions, and ignorant of intellectual opinion. Advertisements and illustrations from popular literature promoted the ideal of the delicate and domestic woman contained within her fashionable corseted dress.ii Beginning in the 1850’s women stuffed their flesh into steel and whaleboned, tightly-laced corsets that produced an exceptionally thin waistline – 15” at times – offset by a voluminous hoopskirt. Adding layers of petticoats made a woman’s trousseau weigh between 10 and 20 pounds – up to 30 pounds in winter. Most women in 1850 often wore up to 14 pounds of undergarments.

Shifting from their original way of life, Hmong Americans began to assimilate into the American lifestyle in order to survive in the new environment. The effect of assimilating Hmong Americans youth have shown some little interest in learning about the Hmong culture. For some others, the knowledge of Hmong culture is minimal knowing only the basic history of the Hmong. This has stimulated a fear amongst the older Hmong who worried that the Hmong culture will cease to exist. Thus, in order to teach the Hmong culture to Hmong American youths and non-Hmong, the older Hmong have relied on the Hmong New Year celebration as a method to maintain their ethnic identity and culture.

With a population of over 1.3 billion people, in 29 states and 7 union territories, India is the most populous democracy in the world. Every state has unique traditional clothes that women wear. However there are three prominent types of clothes worn by women in India i.e. Sari, Salwar Kameez and Kurti. Over time, the sense of dressing has evolved and changed. Due to factors like globalisation and westernisation, today’s women take a modern approach when it comes to dress. The paper focused on female librarians’ clothing in India. The survey was conducted by inviting women librarians in every state to give their opinions about today’s clothing styles and their preferences of clothes for daily use and for special occasions such as conferences/ workshops/meetings, etc. The study also explored piercing and tattooing styles and their preferences, and use of jewellery by women library professionals. It was found that Salwar Kameez, Chudidar/Kurta and Saree were most preferred on weekdays, similar outfits were preferred on weekends or Saturdays including Kurti with jeans. Almost all feel comfortable and confident in the outfits they commonly wear.
