Welcome to “Photos at Zoom.” Dylan Yarbrough: My name is Dylan Yarbrough, I’m a curatorial assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Photography and today we're going to be doing a "Photos at Zoom,” print viewing over photography as a social practice. Dylan Yarbrough: The MoCP is the world's premier College Art Museum that's dedicated to photography. Our institution provokes ideas among students, and artists, and diverse communities throughout the world with groundbreaking exhibitions and educational programing. Dylan Yarbrough: Our mission is to cultivate a deeper understanding of the artistic cultural and political roles of photography in our world today. Dylan Yarbrough: We began collecting in the 1980’s and have since grown our collection to include over 16,000 photographic objects. Dylan Yarbrough: Normally we offer a “Photos at Noon,” event where we hold a public print viewing that allows the general public to view our collection up close and in person. -

Consortium for the National Equal Justice Library Oral History Collection Interview with David Hall Conducted by Alan Houseman May 7, 2015 CNEJL: Hall oral history recorded 2015-05-07 Page 1 of 14 Alan Houseman: This is an oral history of David Hall, who's the executive director of Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid. The interviewer is Alan Houseman for the National Equal Justice Library. Today is May 7, 2015. Alan Houseman: David, tell me a little about your background: where you grew up, where you went to law school, how you got into legal aid work? David Hall: I grew up in a middle class home in Baytown, Texas. That's outside of Houston. Went to Robert E. Lee High School, which was right across the tracks from George Washington Carver High School. Perfectly segregated Southern background. My mother is from here in Travis County, and is of the first Anglo settlers in Travis County, so we go way back in Texas. I came up here to Austin, to the University of Texas undergraduate school in 1960, graduated in '64, went to law school, got married, went to the Peace Corps in Venezuela, learned some Spanish. Got out, came back and finished up law school. My last year of law school I spent pestering the old regional office of OEO that was here in Austin about when they were going to get something called Texas Rural Legal Aid (TRLA) organized. David Hall: Jim DeAnda was the principal functionary for the TRLA at the time. He was trying to get it organized under the auspices of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, the plaintiffs bar. -

Women's History Can Be Taught As a Unit in a United States History Class Or As a United States Women's History Elective
Why Celebrate Woman's History Month by Alan Singer Throughout human history, including most of the history of the United States, women have been treated as second-class citizens. Their continuing second-class status is reflected in many social studies classrooms, where the roles played by women in society and their achievements in the past and present, continue to remain virtually invisible. Although women's names and faces now appear more frequently in social studies textbooks, their inclusion is generally an addition to an already existing curriculum. Female heroes were discovered and fit into previous topics and categories. There is little exploration of the role of women in earlier societies; the ways they lived, the accommodations they were forced to make to patriarchal and oppressive social mores, the familial and community networks and institutions they built, or the struggles women engaged in to achieve legal, political, and economic rights. In an article published by the National Council for Social Studies, Nel Noddings argued that a completely reconceptualized social studies curriculum should focus on women's culture, the realm of the home and family, the idea of women's work, and the role of women as community and international peacemakers.1 In his book, The Disuniting of America, Reflections on a Multicultural Society , Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. argues that the attention given to difference by multiculturalists and ethnocentrists threatens to reinforce "the fragmentation, resegregation, and tribalization of American life." He is particularly concerned that school curricula that focus on specific ethnic or aggrieved social groups are celebratory rather than academic and critical. -

Much of the Civil Rights movement focused on legislation stemming from the Reconstruction period of post-Civil War America, including the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court trial upholding the constitutionality of laws requiring racial segregation, which came to be known as separate but equal. In 1954, Brown v. The Board of Education overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson decision and defined segregation as unconstitutional. The Civil Rights movement continued to fight for true equality for African Americans, including enforced integration, education equality, media representation, and an end to hurtful and destructive racial stereotyping. fig. 1 IMAGES & THE MEDIA Visual Culture refers to the ways in which images are used in society.
