The 2009 Keynote Lecture will be delivered by Professor Osamu Saito. Please click here to view his CV.

APEBH 2009 Keynote Lecture

"An industrious revolution in East Asia? Tokugawa Japan and the Great Divergence debate." Professor Osamu The term 'industrious revolution' is often used to characterise both Eastern and Western economic Saito development in the early modern period. However, the East Asian path was in sharp contrast with the European path. Based on evidence for the Japanese case, the paper will examine the theses of Jan de Vries, Akira Hayami and Kaoru Sugihara in relation to the debate on the Great Divergence.
