Seema Narayan * and Sivagowry Sriananthakumar School of Economics, Finance and Marketing, RMIT University, Melbourne, Victoria 3000, Australia; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 13 August 2020; Accepted: 3 September 2020; Published: 4 September 2020 Abstract: This paper examines the current accounts of 16 developed and developing countries over the period 1970 to 2018. We test whether these nations satisfy their intertemporal solvency condition for external imbalances. The solvency condition in the strong form entails: (1) a cointegration, or a long run equilibrium, relationship between exports and imports of goods and services; and (2) an increase in imports leading to a proportional increase in exports. Our findings imply that the external imbalances are a cause of vulnerability for several nations. Bangladesh satisfies the abovementioned solvency condition—in other words, its current account is sustainable in the strong form. Australia, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, New Zealand, and Venezuela show weak forms of sustainability. For these six nations, the presence of a cointegration relationship between exports and imports coincides with less than proportional increases in exports with increases in imports. The current accounts of Chile and Paraguay are unsustainable—while their exports and imports are cointegrated, a growth in imports leads to a more than proportional increase in exports. For a few nations that failed the full sample (1970–2018) cointegration test, we developed sub-samples by anchoring the start date at 1970 and increasing the sample by every five years from 1999 to 2014. -

SECOND (INCOMPLETE) DRAFT, February 2011. 1 This evolving paper, still an incomplete work-in-progress, is in the spirit (but needing additional work) of the critical realist socio-political-economy tradition of historical research into past and present of Karl Polanyi, Albert Hirschman, and Barrington Moore, a tradition that was eclipsed some decades ago by rational choice, ahistorical, political economy, but which still has much to offer. Polanyi‟s rejection of economic abstractionism and his conceptualization of the formal/substantive distinction seems to me to be essential to the study of long-run socio-economic history. Attempts to understand the present crisis of the world economy could do worse than adopt the interdisciplinary outlook of Polanyi and of Hirschman, neither of whom could ever have been pigeon-holed into a single box such as economic development theorist or political theorist or economic historian. Hirschman‟s attempts to understand the complexities of macro-social processes over time showed an exemplary skepticism about simplistic models and spurious quantification of over-aggregate variables, and a constant concern to study the local specifics of cases within a theoretical framework that rejected the abstraction of the economy from culture, society, and politics. -

Living and operating in remote climates presents challenges to achieving successful and sustainable enterprises, including extreme weather, substandard infrastructure, distance from policy makers, distance from markets and the commercialisation of culture, which is customarily owned by and for use by traditional custodians, to produce and deliver a market-ready tourism product. However, many remote Aboriginal tourism entrepreneurs nevertheless achieve success and sustainability. This paper builds on the work of Foley to identify the characteristics of successful remote Aboriginal tourism enterprises and Aboriginal entrepreneurs in remote areas and the resourceful and creative business practices used by remote Aboriginal entrepreneurs to overcome barriers to success and finds that ongoing connections to community and culture are a key factor in that success. It also draws on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals to identify how the characteristics of remote tourism entrepreneurs and enterprises promote or inhibit the achievement of sustainability and suggests that they offer a framework for effective support of remote Aboriginal entrepreneurs. It concludes by noting that the industry would benefit from further investigation of the contributions made to sustainability by remote Aboriginal tourism enterprises and their stakeholders. -

Intrastate and Interstate Tourism Demand in Australia: an Empirical Analysis
Intrastate and interstate tourism demand in Australia: An empirical analysis ABSTRACT Few studies have investigated intrastate and interstate tourism demand in Australia despite these tourists have different travel characteristics. Using cointegration analysis and error-correction models, this study examines economic determinants of intrastate and interstate tourism, and assesses their relative importance for both types of tourism. Two main findings discovered from this research. First, most of the economic coefficients are not consistent with economic theory. Second, the coefficients for intrastate tourism demand are higher than the coefficients for interstate tourism demand in NSW and WA. This may be useful for developing separate policies and marketing strategies for intrastate and interstate tourism. Keywords : intrastate tourism demand; interstate tourism demand; Australia; cointegration analysis INTRODUCTION In Australia, domestic tourism can be segregated into two categories, namely intrastate and interstate tourism. Such segregation is important because, according to Tourism Research Australia (2007a), intrastate and interstate visitors have different travel characteristics. For instance, most of the interstate visitors travel by air whereas the majority of the intrastate visitors use private vehicles. Interstate visitors differ from intrastate visitors in terms of the length of trips and travel expenditure. For the year ended 31 March 2007, interstate travellers in Australia stayed longer and spent more (averages of 5.4 nights and AUD710, respectively) than intrastate visitors (3.2 nights and AUD342.32, respectively). Furthermore, expenditure by intrastate and interstate visitors are the main revenue source for tourism industry in Australia. Figure 1 shows that, in New South Wales and Western Australia, the expenditure by intrastate visitors exceeded the spending by international visitors. -
