Chapter Two – A Best-Selling Nature Writer John Burroughs loved to write, and he loved the outdoors. He was born on his family’s farm near the small town of Roxbury in New York’s Catskills, those low, green mountains where, in Washington Irving’s story, “Rip Van Winkle,” the ghosts of Henry Hudson’s men bowled to make the thunder. But Burroughs was more interested in the non-fiction writing of Henry David Thoreau, who had gone out into the wilderness to live a simple life among nature, and of Thoreau’s friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson, who wrote about the importance of strong character. He also liked the poetry of William Wordsworth, whose ideas were fancy but who used everyday words so that people could understand his poems. When Burroughs began to write about nature, he used everyday words, too. His essays in magazines were loved by readers who enjoyed sharing his warm feelings about the birds, the flowers and the small animals he came across on his walks in the fields and forests. Burroughs said he wasn’t trying to be a scientist, and he wasn’t using his essays to tell people how to live. “I paint the bird, or the trout, or the scene for its own sake,” he explained. He did more than simply paint pictures with words, however. He also described a way of life that he had learned as a young boy growing up in the country. For instance, he wrote about being patient and about paying attention to the things around you: “In the fields and woods more than anything else all things come to those who wait, because all things are on the move, and are sure sooner or later to come your way,” he said. -

Famous New Yorker John Burroughs As a young man, John Burroughs left his father’s farm home to broaden his mind. His own farm eventually became a shrine to one of America’s greatest writers on nature and rural life. John Burroughs was born near Roxbury, in Delaware County, on April 3, 1837. The seventh child of a former county school teacher, John attended a local primary school known as “the Stone Jug.” His school time was limited by his duties on the family farm. John loved books and yearned to learn and know more about the world and his natural surroundings. His father thought that John needed no more than a primary-school John Burroughs in a rustic chair, c1901 education. When he refused to pay tuition for his Library of Congress, Prints and son’s further education, John left home at age 17. Teaching provided an income while Burroughs tried to become a professional writer. John was influenced by the philosophy and writing style of the popular author RalphWaldo Emerson. When he submitted an essay to the Atlantic Monthly in 1860, the editor suspected him of copying Emerson’s words; others suspected Emerson himself of writing the essay under an assumed name. Burroughs soon proved his individual talent, but still needed a full-time job to make ends meet. During the Civil War he moved to Washington D.C. and became a clerk in the Treasury Department. -

Name: John Burroughs Years: April 3rd, 1837-March 29th, 1921 Residence: West Park, NY; Roxbury, NY Brief Biography: John Burroughs was born on April 3rd, 1837 in Roxbury, New York located in the Catskill Mountains. As a boy, Burroughs would regularly explore the area surrounding his home and would often sit on what he called “Boyhood Rock” and just study the nature around him. While living in Washington D.C. and serving as a teacher, journalist, and treasury clerk, Burroughs met and befriended Walt Whitman who would have a profound impact on Burroughs’s life. Perhaps best known for his writings on nature, Burroughs had an inspiring impact upon the conservation movements of his era. After moving to Esopus, New York and settling on a piece of land he would call “Riverby”, Burroughs and Whitman explored the outdoors there which led to the inspiration for many of his literary works. Soon after, Burroughs built his famous “Slabsides” residence which drew visits from many prominent individuals including conservationist John Muir, journalist Theodore Dreiser, President Theodore Roosevelt and automobile pioneer Henry Ford. Several writings derived from his observations of nature at “Slabsides” combined with the easy to read style Burroughs’ prose helped pioneer, have inspired many to head into nature and advocate for its preservation. Aside from his writings on the Hudson Valley, Burroughs was also a part of the Harriman expedition in Alaska, and accompanied President Roosevelt through Yellowstone among several other notable activities documented in his personal journal. On March 29th 1921, Burroughs passed away on a train ride home from California. -

Jottings From The Golf Course Journal JOHN BURROUGHS By Monroe S. Miller Sit down some time and make a list of all the things that make you proud to be part of the profession we are in. My list would be very long. And if we compared those lists among ourselves, there are many characteristics and features that would appear on everybody's list. Chances are good we all take pride in our land stewardship. Golf courses offer open spaces, wildlife habitat, healthy recreation, green spaces and more than I have room to repeat here. Their role is even more special in the many urban areas where so many are found. Riverby from the orchard. Land stewardship long ago piqued my interest in nature and landscapes, even as a farm kid. And isn't it inter- esting that two of the foremost envi- ronmental thinkers and natural writers — John Muir and Aldo Leopold — lived so close, especially to those of On the porch at Woodchuck Lodge. us in south central Wisconsin. The parallels, a generation apart, are astonishing. Muir grew up near Portage and attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Leopold bought a farm in the sand country near Portage and was a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Historians add a third albeit lesser known name to these two nat- uralists — historian Frederick Jackson Turner. Is it an accident — pure chance — that three notables arose from a View of the Catskills from Woodchuck Wisconsin neighborhood? Why is our Lodge at the turn of the century.
